The composition of the work force in this country is changing from one in which the White male was dominant to one in which by the year 2000 women and ethnic minorities will be dominant. Work force diversity will impact organizations at all levels, including top management, which has been closed to women and minorities, and in particular, minority women. The diverse work force\u27s expectation for advancement into top levels of management will present challenges to organizations. Some organizations have recognized that to remain competitive they need to manage a more diverse work force. The purpose of this study is to provide critically needed information to monocultural organizations to help them understand the organizational experiences of professional Hispanic women and the barriers that these women perceive impede their advancing into higher echelons of organizations. Fourteen professional Hispanic women from the San Diego area participated in the study. The women were highly educated: three had doctoral degrees; three had master\u27s degrees; six had bachelor\u27s degrees; and two had some college experience. The participants had at least three years of recent organizational experience in management positions. The study used both qualitative and quantitative methodologies. A qualitative methodology was used to examine the participants\u27 experiences within the context of their organizations. These experiences were uncovered through participant interviews. Transcripts of the interviews were analyzed using a phenomenological process to discern experiential essences, which were used to answer the research questions. The findings of the study indicated that these participants experienced barriers in organizations, based on their ethnic and gender diversity, which impeded their career development. Highly statistically significant results were obtained from a test for concordance among the participants\u27 rankings of twelve recommendations for making organizations more multicultural. Organizational leaders need to ensure there is support for diversity, because holding back talented diverse employees is detrimental not only to these employees but to an organization\u27s performance as a whole

(Santiago Zemma, 2005).The graph of wine labels is designed by syntactic, semantic and pragmatic characteristics. The purpose of this paper is to compile, classify, rank and analyze the information concerning the configuration of wine labels components. Furthermore, to provide a tool which allows an analysis of this graphic pieces as a whole, as a system or in comparison with other labels. It could be used by professionals who design wine bottles labels or its packaging, by teachers who work in design field, or as a guide for people who consume the product. (…) “designers become a symbolical link between the quality of the product elaborated by our clients and the life style quality of the people who enjoy it. We are responsible for symbolical logistic which esthetically display what an excellent wine needs to call attention. It’s about creating the perfect image, which faithfully portrait all wine attributes, and highlighting the visual aspect of its blend of pleasures. Just so, it is possible to aim a truthful relationship between the product and its brand (Santiago Zemma, 2005).Fil: Schilardi de Bárcena, María del Carmen. Universidad Nacional de Cuyo. p. 110-114Violence in general, including that directed towards older people, constitutes a public health problem. Through a systematic review of the literature, an analysis is undertaken of this problem, including gender as an additional risk factor. The last five years have seen a noticeable increase in the attention paid by professionals and researchers to gender-based violence directed towards the older woman. As a consequence of under-reporting on the part of the victims, and of the difficulty of detection on that of professionals, the statistical data would appear not to reflect the scale of the problem accurately. © 2014 The Authors. Overcoming function annotation errors in the Gram-positive pathogen Streptococcus suis by a proteomics-driven approach

Background: Annotation of protein-coding genes is a key step in sequencing projects. Protein functions are mainly assigned on the basis of the amino acid sequence alone by searching of homologous proteins. However, fully automated annotation processes often lead to wrong prediction of protein functions, and therefore time-intensive manual curation is often essential. Here we describe a fast and reliable way to correct function annotation in sequencing projects, focusing on surface proteomes. We use a proteomics approach, previously proven to be very powerful for identifying new vaccine candidates against Gram-positive pathogens. It consists of shaving the surface of intact cells with two proteases, the specific cleavage-site trypsin and the unspecific proteinase K, followed by LC/MS/MS analysis of the resulting peptides. The identified proteins are contrasted by computational analysis and their sequences are inspected to correct possible errors in function prediction. Results: When applied to the zoonotic pathogen Streptococcus suis, of which two strains have been recently sequenced and annotated, we identified a set of surface proteins without cytoplasmic contamination: all the proteins identified had exporting or retention signals towards the outside and/or the cell surface, and viability of protease-treated cells was not affected. The combination of both experimental evidences and computational methods allowed us to determine that two of these proteins are putative extracellular new adhesins that had been previously attributed a wrong cytoplasmic function. One of them is a putative component of the pilus of this bacterium. Conclusion: We illustrate the complementary nature of laboratory-based and computational methods to examine in concert the localization of a set of proteins in the cell, and demonstrate the utility of this proteomics-based strategy to experimentally correct function annotation errors in sequencing projects. This approach also contributes to provide strong experimental evidences that can be used to annotate those proteins for which a Gene Ontology (GO) term has not been assigned so far. Function annotation correction would then improve the identification of surfaceassociated proteins in bacterial pathogens, thus accelerating the discovery of new vaccines in infectious disease research

Deficiency of Parkinson’s Related Protein DJ-1 Alters Cdk5 Signalling and Induces Neuronal Death by Aberrant Cell Cycle Re-entry

DJ-1 is a multifunctional protein involved in Parkinson disease (PD) that can act as antioxidant, molecular chaperone, protease, glyoxalase, and transcriptional regulator. However, the exact mechanism by which DJ-1 dysfunction contributes to development of Parkinson’s disease remains elusive. Here, using a comparative proteomic analysis between wild-type cortical neurons and neurons lacking DJ-1 (data available via ProteomeXchange, identifier PXD029351), we show that this protein is involved in cell cycle checkpoints disruption. We detect increased amount of p-tau and α-synuclein proteins, altered phosphoinositide-3-kinase/protein kinase B (PI3K/AKT) and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signalling pathways, and deregulation of cyclin-dependent kinase 5 (Cdk5). Cdk5 is normally involved in dendritic growth, axon formation, and the establishment of synapses, but can also contribute to cell cycle progression in pathological conditions. In addition, we observed a decrease in proteasomal activity, probably due to tau phosphorylation that can also lead to activation of mitogenic signalling pathways. Taken together, our findings indicate, for the first time, that aborted cell cycle re-entry could be at the onset of DJ-1-associated PD. Therefore, new approaches targeting cell cycle re-entry can be envisaged to improve current therapeutic strategies

Aging impairs the hepatic subcellular distribution of ChREBP in response to fasting/feeding in rats: Implications on hepatic steatosis

© 2015 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. Aging is associated with alterations of lipid metabolism and increased prevalence of non alcoholic hepatic steatosis.Nevertheless, themechanisms bywhich fat is accumulated in the liver during aging remain incompletely understood. In the present study, we investigated potential alterations that might contribute to the development of hepatic steatosis with aging. To this end, we analyzed the expression and the subcellular localization of key transcriptional factors involved in lipid metabolism such as ChREBP, Foxo1, Foxa2 and SREBP-1c in the liver of 3- and 24-month oldWistar rats. In addition, we studied the intracellular redistribution of ChREBP in response to fasting/refeeding transition. Old rats were characterized by hepatic steatosis, low serum ketone body levels and postprandial hyperinsulinemia. These observations were paralleled by the cytoplasmic localization and decreased expression of Foxa2, while ChREBP expression was markedly up-regulated and mainly localized in the nucleus. Consequently, the expression of lipogenic and β-oxidation genes was up-regulated or downregulated, respectively. Besides, the intracellular redistribution of ChREBP in response to fasting/refeeding transition was also impaired in old animals. Additionally, a negative correlation between serum ketone body levels and the nuclear localization of ChREBP was observed only in adult but not in old rats. Taken together, these data suggest that an age-related dysfunctional adaptation of ChREBP, in response to changes in the nutritional state, might contribute to the development of liver steatosis with aging.Junta de Comunidades de Castilla-La Mancha (JCCM), BFU2012- 39705-C03-01 from Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación, and S2010/BMC2423 from Comunidad de Madrid, Spain. R&D&i Management System in Distributed Manufacturing Systems

    Get PDF
The R&D&i has become a key strategy to ensure competitiveness in a global market. New business models and Distributed Manufacturing Systems (DMS) arise as a form of adaptive response to new market situations. Although R&D&I is incorporated at the strategic level, a lack of information about the management of R&D&I in distributed centers, theirs activities or organizational structure is detected. The aim of this paper is to propose a methodology to implement the Management System (MS) of R&D&I in a Distributed Manufacturing System and enhance the knowledge in relation to this topic. In turn, the management of these activities may differ from the existing manufacturing and their Quality Management System (QMS) so the quality will be discussed in terms of research, development and innovation.

This situation incorporates a great complexity to the life cycle project and increases the volume of information. For this aspects, PLM system (Product Lifecycle Management) are an appropriate choice of design and development process for sustainable projects and a possible solution to reduce the complexity of managing information. Currently PLM system make available all necessary information to the different departments and stakeholders of organisations. But if we analyse the real solutions in detail (both commercial and model which have been developed in the scientific community) there is any tool to manage the sustainability in a comprehensive and efficient way. For this situation in this paper a PLM architecture for sustainability is developed to carry out sustainable engineering projects under strategies of data management. This PLM Architecture can help companies to identify requirements, organise, distribute and manage all relevant information, thought the perspective of the triple-Bottom line (economic, ecological and social
