    Get PDF
In this paper, we present the method of fundamental solutions applied to the determination of elastic resonance frequencies and associated eigenmodes. The method uses the fundamental solution tensor of the Navier equations of elastodynamics in an isotropic material. The applicability of the the method is justified in terms of density results. The accuracy of the method is illustrated through 2D numerical examples for the disk and non trivial shapes.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Learning Analytics and Recommender Systems toward Remote Experimentation

    Get PDF
This paper presents a process based on learning analytics and recom- mender systems to provide suggestions to students about remote laboratories ac- tivities in order to scaffold their performance. For this purpose, the records of remote experiments from the VISIR project were analyzed taking into account one of its installations. Each record is composed of requests containing the as- sembled circuits and the configurations of the measuring equipment, as well as the response provided by the measurement server that evaluates whether a par- ticular request can be performed or not. With the log analysis, it was possible to obtain information in order to determine some initial statistics and provide clues about the student’s behavior during the experiments. Using the concept of rec- ommendation, a service is proposed through request analysis and returns to the students more precise information about possible mistakes in the assembly of circuits or configurations. The process as a whole proves consistent in what re- gards its ability to provide suggestions to the students as they conduct the exper- iments. Furthermore, with the log, relevant information can be offered to teach- ers, thus assisting them in developing strategies to positively impact student’s learning.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Transistor teaching back to Transfer-Resistor : A summary table of definitions and students’ perceptions

The Bipolar Junction Transistor (BJT) study is a regular subject on analog electronic subjects taught in the initial phase of electronic engineering courses. This electronic component, often considered elementary, is far from being simple to explain because it covers several concepts, such as three Regions of Operation, two Working Regimes, and two Region of Operation Boundaries. It is not surprising then that students often find it difficult to understand the functioning of this component. The present article describes partially the work developed by a team with a number of students in order to understand the difficulties of teaching/learning the BJT. We present the students’ perceptions from the analysis of several traditional and modern means to support the learning of the BJT. Interestingly, the learning BJT model considered simpler for beginner students corresponds to the model that originally gave it the name i.e. Trans-Resistor (Transistor).info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Remote Experimentation supported by Learning Analytics and Recommender Systems

    Get PDF
This paper proposes a process based on learning analytics and recommender systems targeted at making suggestions to students about their remote laboratories activities and providing insights to all stakeholders taking part in the learning process. To apply the process, a log with requests and responses of remote experiments from the VISIR project were analyzed. A request is the setup of the experiment including the assembled circuits and the configurations of the measuring equipment. In turn, a response is a message provided by the measurement server indicating measures or an error when it is not possible to execute the experiment. Along the two phases of analysis, the log was analyzed and summarized in order to provide insights about students' experiments. In addition, there is a recommendation service responsible for analyzing the requests thus returning, in case of error, precise information about the assembly of circuits or configurations. The evaluation of the process is consistent in what regards its ability to afford recommendations to the students as they carry out the experiments. Moreover, the summarized information intends to offer teachers means to better understand and develop strategies to scaffold students' learning.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

An Alternative Way of Teaching Operational Amplifiers Using a Reconfigurable and Expandable Kit

    Get PDF
Early on, students must develop competences by implementing simple or complex electronic circuits with Operational Amplifiers (OpAmps). Traditionally, these skills were mainly developed in laboratory classes, but technology allows us to explore other and complementary ways of aiding students in this achievement. This paper presents a contribution to improve the way OpAmps are included in electronic engineering courses’ curricula. A reconfigurable and expandable kit to teach electronic circuits based on the OpAmp uA741 was designed and implemented. This kit comprises a software application locally interfaced with a hardware platform capable of running in a PC. This platform includes a circuit with the OpAmp uA741 able to reconfigure according to a set of parameters defined by a software application. Its reconfiguration capability also enables the establishment of automatic connections for measuring and for applying signals to a reconfigured circuit, plus the ability to simulate the same or other OpAmp-based circuits. This paper provides an overview about the OpAmp uA741 and its relevance in engineering education. After presenting the kit and make some considerations for its improvement, at the end a brief discussion about its implementation in education according to specific educational strategies and methodologies are provided. This work was supported in part by the Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia under Grant FCT-UID-EQU-04730-2013info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Teaching and learning Operational Amplifiers using a reconfigurable and expandable kit

    Get PDF
Operational Amplifiers (OpAmps) are one of the most important integrated circuits in the area of electronics. These type of devices are widely adopted in the area since they allow the design of simple and/or complex analogue circuits without many efforts. It is therefore fundamental to create innovative educational solutions to facilitate their teaching and learning, and in particular the inclusion of more experimental work in a course curricula. For this purpose, it was designed and implemented a reconfigurable and expandable kit to teach and learn electronic circuits based on the OpAmp uA741. The kit comprises a software application and a hardware platform. The software application allows the simulation and the reconfiguration of real electronic circuits based on the OpAmp uA741 included in the hardware platform. For measuring and/or applying signals to a particular reconfigured circuit, users may establish automatic connections. In this paper it is described the features and functionalities provided by the kit, and an overview about the OpAmp uA741. At the end, some teachers’ opinions about their perceptions concerning a possible adoption of the kit in a real educational scenario are presented.N/
