Plasmachemical Double Click Thiolâene Reactions for Wet Electrical Barrier
Click thiolâene chemistry is demonstrated for the reaction of thiol containing molecules with surface alkene bonds during electrical discharge activation. This plasmachemical reaction mechanism is shown to be 2-fold for allyl mercaptan (an alkene and thiol group containing precursor), comprising self-cross-linked nanolayer deposition in tandem with interfacial cross-linking to the surface alkene bonds of a polyisoprene base layer. A synergistic multilayer structure is attained which displays high wet electrical barrier performance during immersion in water
Sustained response to infliximab treatment in two cases of early rheumatoid arthritis that has been maintained after drug withdrawal
The authors report two cases of active seropositive rheumatoid arthritis who were treated in an early phase of the disease with infliximab plus methotrexate obtaining a clinical remission. The benefit was maintained after the discontinuation of the anti-TNF alpha inhibitor for adverse events, indicating that the early administration of the drug may be followed by a sustained remission
Gender differences in clinical features and quality of life of patients with axial spondyloarthritis and psoriatic arthritis
Objective: The aim of the current study was to compare the clinical and treatment characteristics and dimensions of health-related quality of life between female and male patients with axial spondyloarthritis (SpA) and psoriatic arthritis (PsA). Methods: The present study is cross-sectional and comprises 119 patients with axial SpA and 198 patients with PsA. Clinical data were collected by standardized and self-reported instruments. Disease activity was evaluated by the Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Score with C-reactive protein and the Disease Activity in PSoriatic Arthritis (for SpA and PsA, respectively). Health-related quality of life was assessed with the Medical Outcomes Study 36-item Short Form Survey. Patients were stratified by gender, and the socio-demographic, clinical, and quality-of-life data were compared. Results: Women with axial SpA and PsA had significantly lower education (p<0.001, p=0.004, respectively) and higher disease activity (p<0.001, p=0.003, respectively). Female patients with axial SpA were more frequently under second-line therapy (p=0.026) and glucocorticoid treatment (p=0.005), while women with PsA had more radiographic progression (p=0.006). Female patients with axial SpA and PsA had worse scores in the dimensions of quality of life regarding physical role, bodily pain, vitality, and mental health. Women with axial SpA had lower scores in general health, while women with PsA had lower scores in physical and social functioning. Conclusions: Women with axial SpA and PsA had worse scores than men in most clinical and treatment characteristics and health-related quality of life dimensions
Bioinspired Asymmetric-Anisotropic (Directional) Fog Harvesting Based on the Arid Climate Plant Eremopyrum orientale
Asymmetric-anisotropic (directional) fog collection behaviour is observed for leaves of the arid climate plant species Eremopyrum orientale. This is underpinned by a hierarchical surface structure comprising macroscale grooves, microscale tilted cones (in the direction of water flow), and nanoscale platelets. Soft lithography combined with either nanocoating deposition or functional nanoimprinting has been used to replicate this highly-efficient directional water collection mechanism

Interprofessional Communication Team for Caregivers of Patients Hospitalized in the COVID-19 Wards: Results From an Italian Experience
Background: During the COVID-19 pandemic, emergency restrictions did not allow clinician family meetings and relatives' visits. In Molinette Hospital, a new communication model between healthcare providers and families of COVID-19 affected patients was developed by a team of physicians and psychologists. The study's aims were to investigate caregivers' distress and to analyse their satisfaction with the communications provided. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among caregivers of patients of Molinette Hospital COVID wards. Between April and June 2020, all caregivers were contacted 2 weeks after the patient's discharge/death to assess their satisfaction with the communications received through an online survey. Results: A total of 155 caregivers completed the survey. Caregivers' distress level was found to be higher in women than men (p = 0.048) and in caregivers whose relative died compared to the caregivers whose relative was discharged (p < 0.001). More than 85% of caregivers defined communication âexcellentâ/âvery goodâ; being male was associated with higher satisfaction levels than women (ÎČ = â0.165, p = 0.046). Besides daily communication, 63 caregivers (40.6%) received additional support from a psychologist of the team. Conclusions: To our knowledge, this is the first study presenting, in an emergency, a new model of communication provided by a team of physicians and psychologists, and analyzing satisfaction with it. This model was highly appreciated by caregivers and it limited the discomfort caused by the restrictions on relatives' visits. It would be interesting to further evaluate the possibility of extending a communication model that includes doctors and psychologists in routine clinical practice
Chromatin differentiation between Theobroma cacao L. and T. grandiflorum Schum
A comparative analysis of mitotic chromosomes of Theobroma cacao (cacao) and T. grandiflorum (cupuaçu) was performed aiming to identify cytological differences between the two most important species of this genus. Both species have symmetric karyotypes, with 2n = 20 metacentric chromosomes ranging in size from 2.00 to 1.19 ÎŒm (cacao) and from 2.21 to 1.15 ÎŒm (cupuaçu). The interphase nuclei of both species were of the arreticulate type, displaying up to 20 chromocentres, which were more regularly shaped in cacao than in cupuaçu. Prophase chromosomes of both species were more condensed in the proximal region, sometimes including the whole short arm. Both species exhibited only one pair of terminal heterochromatic bands, positively stained with chromomycin A 3 , which co-localized with the single 45S rDNA site. Each karyotype displayed a single 5S rDNA site in the proximal region of another chromosome pair. Heterochromatic bands were also observed on the centromeric/pericentromeric regions of all 20 chromosomes of cacao after C-banding followed by Giemsa or DAPI staining, whereas in cupuaçu they were never detected. These data suggest that the chromosomes of both species have been largely conserved and their pericentromeric chromatin is the only citologically differentiated region
