Using Marion County, Indiana coroner records and deputy field officer reports to understand heroin and prescription painkiller overdoses
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI)Deaths due to prescription painkillers and heroin have quickly become national,
state, and local public health concerns. Studies using data from Medical Examiners or
Coroner Offices throughout the United States have been conducted and are contributing
to the understanding of this epidemic. However, the analysis of these fatalities are
specific to the communities where the study was conducted and cannot be assumed that
the decedents in one community are similar to decedents in another community. Many
local governments and agencies throughout the U.S. are aware that this problem exists in
their communities, but are not prepared to adequately respond to and intervene in these
fatalities as an analysis of those who have died has rarely been conducted. This
dissertation is a replication study of longitudinal epidemiological analyses of opiate
related fatalities that was implemented in a location where an analysis of opiate-related
fatalities had not been conducted, Marion County, Indiana. The purpose of the
dissertation was twofold: (1) to describe the demographic characteristics of the decedents
using publicly available data from the Marion County Coronerâs Office to be used in
informing future preventative efforts to decrease opiate-related fatalities in Marion
County and (2) to inform other communities on how to conduct a similar analysis in their
own community.
This dissertation describes the methods of the replication study, provides
descriptive results of the people who died from opiate-related overdoses, and: (a) Report the types of opiates identified in blood toxicology reports and (b) Present the histories of
opiate-related decedents as reported in the Deputy Coroner Field Officerâs Reports
(DCFOR). Additionally, analysis was conducted to determine if decedent characteristics
deferred depending on the type of opiate fatality based on the toxicology in 1) heroin
alone, 2) painkillers alone, and 3) heroin and painkillers combined

The genetics of cholesteatoma study. Lossâofâfunction variants in an affected family
The aetiology of cholesteatoma remains elusive. In a recent systematic review, we discussed reports of multiple cases of cholesteatoma within families, which suggests a genetic predisposition in some cases (1). We have established a U.K. database and DNA sample bank that can be used to identify genetic variants that coâsegregate with cholesteatoma in multiplyâaffected families. Recruitment to this Genetics of Cholesteatoma (GOC) Study is via the U.K. National Institute of Health Research Clinical Research Network. This preliminary communication describes the results of whole exome sequencing (WES) of DNA extracted from participants in the first fully sequenced family recruited to the study. Rare variants were filtered for coâsegregation with the cholesteatoma phenotype, and for their putative functional impact. We have identified loss of function variants in the genes EGFL8 and BTNL9 as candidate variants of interest. These are preliminary observations and the variants are of unknown significance to the disease pathology without replication or further investigation
The Ocean Enterpriseâunderstanding and quantifying business activity in support of observing, measuring and forecasting the ocean
Sustained ocean observations, measurements and models provide a wide range of societal benefits underpinning the safety, operational and compliance needs of beneficiaries that operate around, on and under the ocean (In the context of this paper, the term âoceanâ is defined as encompassing the global ocean, enclosed seas and the US Great Lakes.) They also provide an essential input to ocean scientific research and the effective protection of the marine environment. Delivering the means to collect and use ocean data and information on a sustained basis constitutes a significant business undertaking. The companies that enable sustained ocean observation, measurement and forecasting, and deliver its benefits as commercial services, combine to create a unique and growing industry cluster; the Ocean Enterprise. Ocean Enterprise businesses underpin the ability to provide societal benefit from sustained ocean observations, measurements and models, as well as delivering significant economic and employment benefits in their own right. In this paper, we describe a systematic evaluation of the scale, scope and characteristics of the Ocean Enterprise in the United States. We explore the ways in which this industry cluster interacts with the US Integrated Ocean Observing System and how the United States Ocean Enterprise compares to that of the United Kingdom
