Effect of Erythropoietin in a Patient with Severe Congestive Heart Failure – A Case Report

    Get PDF
Erythropoietin (EPO), traditionally known as a hematopoietic hormone, has recently been shown to have effects beyond hematopoiesis such as prevention of neuronal and cardiac apoptosis secondary to ischemia and induction of neoangiogenesis4,5,12,13. Patients with congestive heart failure (CHF) suffer considerable morbidity and mortality despite advances in therapy. Anemia, CHF, and chronic kidney insuficiency often coexist and interact to cause or worsen each other in the so-called cardio-renal anemia syndrome3. Treatment with EPO has shown promise in such patients. The paper reviews a case of a successful recovery of cardiac function in a patient with a severe CHF during the treatment with EPO

Razvoj telemedicine u promicanju zdravstvene skrbi u udaljenim i izoliranim područjima

Telemedicine is a relatively new way of clinical practice. It enables rapid access to remote medical expertise by means of telecommunication and information technologies, no matter where the patient or relevant expertise is located. The focus of the telemedicine project was to improve access to quality health services and to reduce the isolation of remote health care. Almost every clinical specialty has used telemedicine in some way, even though radiologists, cardiologists, dermatologists, and psychiatrists have been the clinical specialists most actively involved in telemedicine. In order to put the system to life in the isolated areas such as islands, it is necessary to keep the system functioning 24 hours a day. The need for consultations through telemedicine appears in real time, and not at an expected moment. With the development of a new information age telemedicine has been slowly incorporating into all aspects of medical practice.

Direct pollution cost assessment of cruising tourism in the Croatian Adriatic

Cruise tourism is one of the fastest growing sectors of the tourism industry and one that has significant environmental, economic and social impacts on target destinations. Yet, tourism decision makers, developers and managers rarely incorporate or estimate environmental impacts in their tourism development planning. Indeed, the analysis of the resulting resource exploitation is rarely undertaken until carrying capacity is breached and attractiveness diminished. In this article an assessment is offered that determines, quantifies and financially estimates emissions and waste streams so they can be compared with the direct income generated to the local economy by cruising tourism. It is applied to the Croatian part of the Adriatic and financially evaluates environmental impacts, arguing that they are negative externalities due to inappropriate internalization and management. The purpose of the assessment is to give a “snapshot” of the situation, and also to create the groundwork for a model that will assist decision makers and stakeholders, at different levels and of different interests, to prevent and reduce the ecological, health and economic risks associated with dead-end tourism development

Construction and techniques of writing a scientific paper in natural and engineering sciences

In science and scientific research there is a wide spectre of fields and subfields which are not always strictly confined. Different classifications of sciences are also known. Numerous books have been published regarding scientific research, types of scientific papers and manners in which their results are published. This literature is very detailed and precise within international academic circles, especially the literature that relates to publishing scientific books and doctoral theses. However, there are certain dilemmas and inconsistencies which can confuse a young scientist when writing an original research article. After a brief review of issues pertinent to scientific paper writing, methodology of scientific research and type of papers, this paper shows characteristics and construction of an original research article. It shows a technique of writing a paper in all scientific fields and subfields with special emphasis on natural and engineering sciences and in accordance with international and domestic standards. Wider practical guidelines can be found in the cited literature, so they can be additionally used, if needed. Relationship between the names of people and enterprises with plant origin with phytotoponyms in five Croatian regions

In this study, the first and last names of people (FN and LN), enterprises (EN) (with plants’ species roots in their names) and phytotoponyms (PT) in five Croatian regions are analyzed, in their relationships. The goals of the study were: to determine the correlations between FN, LN, EN and PT; to determine the latent structure of these variables; to forecast number of PT (criterion) on the base of predictors (FN, LN, EN); to determine grouping of the places (within certain regions) as cases by two plants’ categorizations; to determine grouping of the plants as cases by regions. We have analyzed 15 places, grouped in five regions, with 39 different plant species. The results revealed that the only principal component highly positively correlated with the variables last name and office name, while the projections for the variables first name (moderate high) and phytotoponyms (low size) were negative. Prediction of the criteria phytotoponyms is satisfactorily good, using three predictors: last name, first name and the office name. First cluster analysis revealed that phytotoponyms are mostly related with trees and deciduous plants, while names are related with trees, deciduous and herbaceous plants. Second cluster analysis obtained clear distinction between regions in dominant PTs, based on certain plants’ names. The results indicate clear association between phytotoponyms and names of people
