    Chylous ascites due to signet ring cell gastric adenocarcinoma

    “Chylous ascites is a rare presentation of peritoneal effusion. The signet ring cell gastric adenocarcinoma is also relatively rare presentation of gastric cancer. We present a quite rare case of chylous ascites associated with signet ring cell gastric adenocarcinoma. Case report: a 47-years-old Caucasian man presented to our emergency department with abdominal distention. The abdominal ultra-sound showed high volume ascites and the diagnostic paracentesis revealed milk-like peritoneal fluid rich in triglycerides. He was underwent to medium chain triglycerides based diet, total parenteric diet and treatment with somatostatin without response. Due to presented digestive hemorrhagic events, upper digestive endoscopy was performed and revealed signet ring cells gastric adenocarcinoma on biopsy. The patient died in disseminated intravascular coagulation context. Conclusion: chylous asicites is a rare presentation of ascites and it may be associated with abdominal neoplasm. The prompt diagnosis is important for optimize the etiology evaluation and therapeutically approach.

    Phase diagram for non-axisymmetric plasma balls

    Plasma balls and rings emerge as fluid holographic duals of black holes and black rings in the hydrodynamic/gravity correspondence for the Scherk-Schwarz AdS system. Recently, plasma balls spinning above a critical rotation were found to be unstable against m-lobed perturbations. In the phase diagram of stationary solutions the threshold of the instability signals a bifurcation to a new phase of non-axisymmetric configurations. We find explicitly this family of solutions and represent them in the phase diagram. We discuss the implications of our results for the gravitational system. Rotating non-axisymmetric black holes necessarily radiate gravitational waves. We thus emphasize that it would be important, albeit possibly out of present reach, to have a better understanding of the hydrodynamic description of gravitational waves and of the gravitational interaction between two bodies. We also argue that it might well be that a non-axisymmetric m-lobed instability is also present in Myers-Perry black holes for rotations below the recently found ultraspinning instability.Comment: 1+22 pages, 3 figures. v2: minor corrections and improvements, matches published versio

    Callous-Unemotional Traits Moderate Anticipated Guilt and Wrongness Judgments to Everyday Moral Transgressions in Adolescents.

    Callous-unemotional (CU) traits observed during childhood and adolescence are thought to be precursors of psychopathic traits in adulthood. Adults with high levels of psychopathic traits typically present antisocial behavior. Such behavior can be indicative of atypical moral processing. Evidence suggests that moral dysfunction in these individuals may stem from a disruption of affective components of moral processing rather than from an inability to compute moral judgments per se. No study to date has tested if the dissociation between affective and cognitive dimensions of moral processing linked to psychopathic traits in adulthood is also linked to CU traits during development. Here, 47 typically developing adolescents with varying levels of CU traits completed a novel, animated cartoon task depicting everyday moral transgressions and indicated how they would feel in such situations and how morally wrong the situations were. Adolescents with higher CU traits reported reduced anticipated guilt and wrongness appraisals of the transgressions. However, our key finding was a significant interaction between CU traits and anticipated guilt in predicting wrongness judgments. The strength of the association between anticipated guilt and wrongness judgement was significantly weaker for those with higher levels of CU traits. This evidence extends our knowledge on the cognitive-affective processing deficits that may underlie moral dysfunction in youth who are at heightened risk for antisocial behavior and psychopathy in adulthood. Future longitudinal research is required to elucidate whether there is an increased dissociation between different components of moral processing from adolescence to adulthood for those with high psychopathic traits

    Angular dependence of the bulk nucleation field Hc2 of aligned MgB2 crystallites

    The angular dependence of the bulk nucleation field of a sample made of aligned MgB2 crystallites was obtained using dc magnetization and ac susceptibility measurements. A good fitting of the data by the three-dimensional anisotropic Ginzburg-Landau theory attests to the bulk nature of the critical field H-c2. We found a mass anisotropy ratio epsilon2 approximate to0.39 that implies an anisotropy of the Fermi velocity, with a ratio of 1.6 between the in-plane and perpendicular directions, if an isotropic gap energy is assumed. For an s-wave anisotropic gap this ratio could increase to 2.5. Besides the fundamental implications of this result, it also implies the use of texturization techniques to optimize the critical current in wires and other polycrystalline forms of MgB2.641

The raw data supporting the conclusions of this article will be made available by the authors, without undue reservation, to any qualified researcher upon request.El Niño years are characterized by a high sea surface temperature anomaly in the Equatorial Pacific Ocean, which leads to unusually warm and dry conditions over many fire-prone regions globally. This can lead to an increase in burned area and emissions from fire activity, and socio-economic, and environmental losses. Previous studies using satellite observations to assess the impacts of the recent 2015/16 El Niño found an increase in burned area in some regions compared to La Niña years. Here, we use the dynamic land surface model JULES to assess how conditions differed as a result of the El Niño by comparing simulations driven by observations from the year 2015/16 with mean climatological drivers of temperature, precipitation, humidity, wind, air pressure, and short and long-wave radiation. We use JULES with the interactive fire module INFERNO to assess the effects on precipitation, temperature, burned area, and the associated impacts on the carbon sink globally and for three regions: South America, Africa, and Asia. We find that the model projects a variable response in precipitation, with some areas including northern South America, southern Africa and East Asia getting drier, and most areas globally seeing an increase in temperature. As a result, higher burned area is simulated with El Niño conditions in most regions, although there are areas of both increased and decreased burned area over Africa. South America shows the largest fire response with El Niño, with a 13% increase in burned area and emitted carbon, corresponding with the largest decrease in carbon uptake. Within South America, peak fire occurs from August to October across central-southern Brazil, and temperature is shown to be the main driver of the El Niño-induced increase in burned area during this period.     Stability analysis and quasinormal modes of Reissner Nordstr{\o}m Space-time via Lyapunov exponent

    We explicitly derive the proper time (τ)(\tau) principal Lyapunov exponent (λp\lambda_{p}) and coordinate time (tt) principal Lyapunov exponent (λc\lambda_{c}) for Reissner Nordstr{\o}m (RN) black hole (BH) . We also compute their ratio. For RN space-time, it is shown that the ratio is λpλc=r0r023Mr0+2Q2\frac{\lambda_{p}}{\lambda_{c}}=\frac{r_{0}}{\sqrt{r_{0}^2-3Mr_{0}+2Q^2}} for time-like circular geodesics and for Schwarzschild BH it is λpλc=r0r03M\frac{\lambda_{p}}{\lambda_{c}}=\frac{\sqrt{r_{0}}}{\sqrt{r_{0}-3M}}. We further show that their ratio λpλc\frac{\lambda_{p}}{\lambda_{c}} may vary from orbit to orbit. For instance, Schwarzschild BH at innermost stable circular orbit(ISCO), the ratio is λpλcrISCO=6M=2\frac{\lambda_{p}}{\lambda_{c}}\mid_{r_{ISCO}=6M}=\sqrt{2} and at marginally bound circular orbit (MBCO) the ratio is calculated to be λpλcrmb=4M=2\frac{\lambda_{p}}{\lambda_{c}}\mid_{r_{mb}=4M}=2. Similarly, for extremal RN BH the ratio at ISCO is λpλcrISCO=4M=223\frac{\lambda_{p}}{\lambda_{c}}\mid_{r_{ISCO}=4M}=\frac{2\sqrt{2}}{\sqrt{3}}. We also further analyse the geodesic stability via this exponent. By evaluating the Lyapunov exponent, it is shown that in the eikonal limit , the real and imaginary parts of the quasi-normal modes of RN BH is given by the frequency and instability time scale of the unstable null circular geodesics.Comment: Accepted in Pramana, 07/09/201

    Stability study of a model for the Klein-Gordon equation in Kerr spacetime

    The current early stage in the investigation of the stability of the Kerr metric is characterized by the study of appropriate model problems. Particularly interesting is the problem of the stability of the solutions of the Klein-Gordon equation, describing the propagation of a scalar field of mass μ\mu in the background of a rotating black hole. Rigorous results proof the stability of the reduced, by separation in the azimuth angle in Boyer-Lindquist coordinates, field for sufficiently large masses. Some, but not all, numerical investigations find instability of the reduced field for rotational parameters aa extremely close to 1. Among others, the paper derives a model problem for the equation which supports the instability of the field down to a/M0.97a/M \approx 0.97.Comment: Updated version, after minor change

    Kerr-AdS and its Near-horizon Geometry: Perturbations and the Kerr/CFT Correspondence

    We investigate linear perturbations of spin-s fields in the Kerr-AdS black hole and in its near-horizon geometry (NHEK-AdS), using the Teukolsky master equation and the Hertz potential. In the NHEK-AdS geometry we solve the associated angular equation numerically and the radial equation exactly. Having these explicit solutions at hand, we search for linear mode instabilities. We do not find any (non-)axisymmetric instabilities with outgoing boundary conditions. This is in agreement with a recent conjecture relating the linearized stability properties of the full geometry with those of its near-horizon geometry. Moreover, we find that the asymptotic behaviour of the metric perturbations in NHEK-AdS violates the fall-off conditions imposed in the formulation of the Kerr/CFT correspondence (the only exception being the axisymmetric sector of perturbations).Comment: 26 pages. 4 figures. v2: references added. matches published versio

    The Eyes Have It: Sex and Sexual Orientation Differences in Pupil Dilation Patterns

    Recent research suggests profound sex and sexual orientation differences in sexual response. These results, however, are based on measures of genital arousal, which have potential limitations such as volunteer bias and differential measures for the sexes. The present study introduces a measure less affected by these limitations. We assessed the pupil dilation of 325 men and women of various sexual orientations to male and female erotic stimuli. Results supported hypotheses. In general, self-reported sexual orientation corresponded with pupil dilation to men and women. Among men, substantial dilation to both sexes was most common in bisexual-identified men. In contrast, among women, substantial dilation to both sexes was most common in heterosexual-identified women. Possible reasons for these differences are discussed. Because the measure of pupil dilation is less invasive than previous measures of sexual response, it allows for studying diverse age and cultural populations, usually not included in sexuality research
