Fundamental Strings and Black Holes
We propose a black hole thermodynamic description of highly excited charged
and uncharged perturbative string states in 3+1 dimensional type II and 4+1
dimensional heterotic string theory. We also discuss the generalization to
extremal and non-extremal black holes carrying magnetic charges.Comment: 25 pages, harvmac; V2: Added reference
Pharmaceutical removal from different water matrixes by Fenton process at near-neutral pH: Doehlert design and transformation products identification by UHPLC-QTOF MS using a purpose-built database
This work evaluates the Fenton process in the removal of eight pharmaceuticals (gemfibrozil, nimesulide, furosemide, paracetamol, propranolol, dipyrone, fluoxetine, and diazepam), present at an initial concentration of 500 μg L−1 for each compound, from three different water matrixes (distilled water, simulated wastewater, and hospital wastewater). The Fenton process conditions (iron and hydrogen peroxide concentrations, and pH) were optimized for the distilled water matrix by Doehlert design associated with response surface methodology. These corresponded to initial Fe2+ and hydrogen peroxide concentrations of 12.5 and 533 mg L−1, respectively, and pH 5.0. Mineralization rates and pharmaceutical degradation were monitored for all water matrixes and different experimental conditions employed. Unique iron addition, using low (12.5 mg L−1) and increased concentrations (37.5 mg L−1) were evaluated. These preliminary results motivated the study of the Fenton process employing successive iron additions and using an excess of hydrogen peroxide in the reaction medium. Multiple iron addition favored higher oxidation of the initial contaminants. Finally, the most persistent transformation products generated during the Fenton process were identified by liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole-time of flight mass spectrometry (UHPLC-QTOF MS) using a purpose-built database that allowed monitoring 97 transformation products in a single injection. In this study, 12 transformation products (TPs) were tentatively identified employing this purpose-built database. Most TPs generated were classified as of high toxicity (Cramer rules) and showed ready biodegradability (START biodegradability)
On the Thermodynamic Geometry of BTZ Black Holes
We investigate the Ruppeiner geometry of the thermodynamic state space of a
general class of BTZ black holes. It is shown that the thermodynamic geometry
is flat for both the rotating BTZ and the BTZ Chern Simons black holes in the
canonical ensemble. We further investigate the inclusion of thermal
fluctuations to the canonical entropy of the BTZ Chern Simons black holes and
show that the leading logartithmic correction due to Carlip is reproduced. We
establish that the inclusion of thermal fluctuations induces a non zero scalar
curvature to the thermodynamic geometry.Comment: 1+17 pages, LaTeX, 4 eps figure
Logarithmic Corrections to N=2 Black Hole Entropy: An Infrared Window into the Microstates
Logarithmic corrections to the extremal black hole entropy can be computed
purely in terms of the low energy data -- the spectrum of massless fields and
their interaction. The demand of reproducing these corrections provides a
strong constraint on any microscopic theory of quantum gravity that attempts to
explain the black hole entropy. Using quantum entropy function formalism we
compute logarithmic corrections to the entropy of half BPS black holes in N=2
supersymmetric string theories. Our results allow us to test various proposals
for the measure in the OSV formula, and we find agreement with the measure
proposed by Denef and Moore if we assume their result to be valid at weak
topological string coupling. Our analysis also gives the logarithmic
corrections to the entropy of extremal Reissner-Nordstrom black holes in
ordinary Einstein-Maxwell theory.Comment: LaTeX file, 66 page
Perturbations and Stability of Higher-Dimensional Black Holes
In this lecture, I explain the gauge-invariant formulation for perturbations
of background spacetimes with untwisted homologous Einstein fibres, which
include lots of practically important spacetimes such as static black holes,
static black branes and rotating black holes in various dimensions. As
applications, we discuss the stability of static black holes in higher
dimensions and flat black branes.Comment: 45 pages, 9 figures. Based on the lecture given at the 4th Aegean

Extremal limit of the regular charged black holes in nonlinear electrodynamics
The near horizon limit of the extreme nonlinear black hole is investigated.
It is shown that resulting geometry belongs to the AdS2xS2 class with different
modules of curvatures of subspaces and could be described in terms of the
Lambert functions. It is demonstrated that the considered class of Lagrangians
does not admit solutions of the Bertotti-Robinson type

Normal mode analysis for scalar fields in BTZ black hole background
We analyze the possibility of inequivalent boundary conditions for a scalar
field propagating in the BTZ black hole space-time. We find that for certain
ranges of the black hole parameters, the Klein-Gordon operator admits a
one-parameter family of self-adjoint extensions. For this range, the BTZ
space-time is not quantum mechanically complete. We suggest a physically
motivated method for determining the spectra of the Klein-Gordon operator.Comment: 6 pages, no figure, late
Logarithmic Corrections to Rotating Extremal Black Hole Entropy in Four and Five Dimensions
We compute logarithmic corrections to the entropy of rotating extremal black
holes using quantum entropy function i.e. Euclidean quantum gravity approach.
Our analysis includes five dimensional supersymmetric BMPV black holes in type
IIB string theory on T^5 and K3 x S^1 as well as in the five dimensional CHL
models, and also non-supersymmetric extremal Kerr black hole and slowly
rotating extremal Kerr-Newmann black holes in four dimensions. For BMPV black
holes our results are in perfect agreement with the microscopic results derived
from string theory. In particular we reproduce correctly the dependence of the
logarithmic corrections on the number of U(1) gauge fields in the theory, and
on the angular momentum carried by the black hole in different scaling limits.
We also explain the shortcomings of the Cardy limit in explaining the
logarithmic corrections in the limit in which the (super)gravity description of
these black holes becomes a valid approximation. For non-supersymmetric
extremal black holes, e.g. for the extremal Kerr black hole in four dimensions,
our result provides a stringent testing ground for any microscopic explanation
of the black hole entropy, e.g. Kerr/CFT correspondence.Comment: LaTeX file, 50 pages; v2: added extensive discussion on the relation
