    Heterotic compactifications and nearly-Kahler manifolds

    We propose that under certain conditions heterotic string compactifications on half-flat and nearly-Kahler manifolds are equivalent. Based on this correspondence we argue that the moduli space of the nearly-Kahler manifolds under discussion consists only of the Kahler deformations moduli space and there is no correspondent for the complex structure deformations.Comment: 5 pages, references added, typos correcte

    Decoherence induced by a phase-damping reservoir

    A phase damping reservoir composed by NN-bosons coupled to a system of interest through a cross-Kerr interaction is proposed and its effects on quantum superpo sitions are investigated. By means of analytical calculations we show that: i-) the reservoir induces a Gaussian decay of quantum coherences, and ii-) the inher ent incommensurate character of the spectral distribution yields irreversibility . A state-independent decoherence time and a master equation are both derived an alytically. These results, which have been extended for the thermodynamic limit, show that nondissipative decoherence can be suitably contemplated within the EI D approach. Finally, it is shown that the same mechanism yielding decoherence ar e also responsible for inducing dynamical disentanglement.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figure

    Black Holes in Supergravity: the non-BPS Branch

    We construct extremal, spherically symmetric black hole solutions to 4D supergravity with charge assignments that preclude BPS-saturation. In particular, we determine the ground state energy as a function of charges and moduli.     Attitudes toward people with disabilities in the social context of dating and marriage: A comparison of American, Taiwanese, and Singaporean college students

    The purpose of this study is to examine the attitudes of American, Taiwanese, and Singaporean students toward people with disabilities in the general context, as well as the specific social context of dating and marriage. The participants include 212 Taiwanese, 115 Singaporean, and 186 American students. They were given the Attitudes Toward Disabled Persons Scale, Form A (ATDP-A) and the Attitudes Toward Dating and Marriage Scale (ATDMS); the results indicated significant differences between American and Asian students in both the general and specific social contexts. Female American students consistently revealed the most favorable attitudes toward people with disabilities. Implications for cross-cultural rehabilitation practice and research are discussed

    Head-on collisions of unequal mass black holes in D=5 dimensions

    We study head-on collisions of unequal mass black hole binaries in D=5 space-time dimensions, with mass ratios between 1:1 and 1:4. Information about gravitational radiation is extracted by using the Kodama-Ishibashi gauge-invariant formalism and details of the apparent horizon of the final black hole. For the first time, we present waveforms, total integrated energy and momentum for this process. Our results show surprisingly good agreement, within 5% or less, with those extrapolated from linearized, point-particle calculations. Our results also show that consistency with the area theorem bound requires that the same process in a large number of spacetime dimensions must display new features.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, RevTex4. v2: Published versio

    Virus-mediated transient expression techniques enable gene function studies in black-grass

    Even though considerable progress has been made in weed ecology, weed molecular biology has been hindered by an inability to genetically manipulate weeds. Genetic manipulation is essential to demonstrate a causative relationship between genotype and phenotype. Herein we demonstrate that virus-mediated transient expression techniques developed for other monocots can be used in black-grass (Alopecurus myosuroides) for loss- and gain-of-function studies. We not only use virus induced gene silencing (VIGS) to create the black-grass exhibiting reduced PHYTOENE DESATURASE expression and virus-mediated overexpression (VOX) to drive GREEN FLUORESCENT PROTEIN, we demonstrate these techniques are applicable to testing hypotheses related to herbicide resistance in black-grass. We use VIGS to demonstrate that AmGSTF1 is necessary for the resistant biotype Peldon to survive fenoxaprop application and show the heterologous expression of the bialaphos resistance gene with VOX is sufficient to confer resistance to an otherwise lethal dose of glufosinate. Black-grass is the most problematic weed for winter-cereal farmers in the UK and Western Europe as it has rapidly evolved adaptions that allow it to effectively avoid current integrated weed management practices. Black-grass also reduces yields and therefore directly threatens food security and productivity. Novel disruptive technologies which mitigate resistance evolution and enable better control over this pernicious weed are therefore required. These virus-mediated protocols offer a step change in our ability to alter genes of interest under controlled laboratory conditions and therefore to gain a molecular-level understanding of how black-grass can survive in the agri-environment

    São de suma importância os estudos realizados in vitro para multiplicar e propagar genótipos de pimenta-do-reino resistentes a doenças e a utilização de cultivares possibilitou o aumento da produtividade aos pipericultores. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho foi realizar o estabelecimento de plântulas da cultivar Kuthiravally via meristema, a fim de disponibilizar mudas vigorosas e com alta produtividade ao produtor. Para a obtenção dos brotos foi preparado o meio nutritivo MS (Murashige & Skoop) para a diferenciação in vitro, com sacarose a 3% e 0,5 mg.L-1 de BAP (Benzilaminopurina). A contagem dos números de gemas/brotos foi estipulada quando os explantes foram inoculados em meio de enraizamento suplementado com 0,05 de ANA (Ácido naftalenacético). Em média foram obtidos cerca de 14,77 gemas por frasco, permitindo uma multiplicação aceitável para produção de mudas. O enraizamento foi realizado, porém ainda está sob análise

    Identification of mechanisms involved in mastitis response by means of gene network building.

    Mastitis, an inflammation of the mammary gland, is the most prevalent and costly production disease in dairy herds worldwide. It is caused generally by bacteria and accounts for a significant decrease in milk production and quality. One promising approach to reduce problems caused by mastitis, in addition to sanitary care, is the selection of animals resistant to disease and the incorporation of this trait into the herds. Therefore, studies to better understand the mechanisms involved in animal response to this disease are essential to the proposition of new advances in area. In this context, the aim of this study was to identify groups of genes involved in cow response to mastitis infection, through gene network building from microarray data. Gene expression data from the GeneChipâ Bovine Genome Array (Affymetrix) hybridization with milk somatic cells samples from Holstein-Zebu crossbreed dairy cows, obtained before (B) and 24 hrs after (A) artificial infection with Staphylococcus agalactiae, were analyzed using a network building methodology based on gene co-expression. We used WGCNA (Weighted Gene Co-expression Analysis), a systems biology method for describing the correlation patterns among genes across microarray samples, that can be used for finding clusters (modules) of highly correlated genes to identify modules of co-expressed genes, which may correspond to functionally related genes. By comparing two networks (between contrasting data sets), conserved and non-conserved modules can be identified. This strategy, named differential network analysis, aims to identify genes groups that are both differentially expressed and differentially connected, and changes in connectivity may correspond to large-scale rewiring, in response to environmental changes and/or physiologic perturbations. Two microarray data sets, B (n=5) and A (n=5), were preprocessed using affy and gcrma R/Bioconductor packages. A filter was applied, which resulted in the use of only those transcripts present in all samples. Gene co-expression networks were identified separately for each group (B and A), by the R/WGCNA package. Gene networks were compared between the two groups, and non-conserved modules were uncovered from a correlation test of the connectivity values. Our analysis identified a total of 17 modules of co-expressed genes, three of them, designed by the colors grey (n=35), blue (n=37) and turquoise (n=192), non-conserved between the groups. Using Blast2GO for enrichment analysis, we find the molecular function Protein Binding overrepresented in all three modules. However, in despite of the same molecular function, each one of the modules showed distinct characteristcs. Genes of grey module (BTG3, CD3E, MBD1, CHIC2, PLXNA3, MOCS3, NEIL1, VPS45, BCL2) were related to apoptosis and antigen recognition. Genes of turquoise module were enriched in inflammation mediators, including known mastitis marker genes (FGL1, GJA1, F2RL1, PTPRF, S100A2, TGFB2). The blue one uncovered genes involved in cell division and inflammatory response (CD97, MAD2L1, ZFP106, CDKN2C, LOC514364, NOP14, PCBD1, LOC100139798, AP1S1, EDN1, IL1B, ANXA11). Our study identified some mechanisms (represented by gene modules) that have changed in cows in early response to mastitis infection. Further analysis are being carried out, based on these results, to advance the understanding of animals response to the disease, which can lead to identify the candidate genes that could be used in breeding programs.X-MEETING 2011

    Exact solutions for supersymmetric stationary black hole composites

    Four dimensional N=2 supergravity has regular, stationary, asymptotically flat BPS solutions with intrinsic angular momentum, describing bound states of separate extremal black holes with mutually nonlocal charges. Though the existence and some properties of these solutions were established some time ago, fully explicit analytic solutions were lacking thus far. In this note, we fill this gap. We show in general that explicit solutions can be constructed whenever an explicit formula is known in the theory at hand for the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of a single black hole as a function of its charges, and illustrate this with some simple examples. We also give an example of moduli-dependent black hole entropy.Comment: 13 pages, 1 figur
