    Abstract The results of orthogonal cutting tests on unidirectional carbon and glass fibre reinforced plastics are presented. The specimens were under shape of rectangular plates, circular disks and cylinders with different fibre architectures and a milling machine, a lathe machine and a five-axis high-speed vertical machining centre, were used for the experimental tests. The cutting speed was varied. During the tests, performed at low cutting speed, avoiding thermal effects, and high speed, to investigate about the effect of the cutting velocity on the cut quality, the fibre orientation respect to the cutting direction, the tool rake angle and the depth of cut were varied to investigate their influence on the phenomenon. A high speed steel tool in different geometries, was used. The mechanisms of chip formation and the cutting quality were investigated. A tentative to correlate the mechanisms of chip formation and cutting forces signals was done. Since the anisotropy, the mechanisms of chip formation consists of different failure modes occurring simultaneously and their identification, on the basis of the cutting force evolution, is very complex. Only in particular conditions, the features of cutting forces allow a precise identification of the chip development and detachment. The results indicated that the fibre orientation respect to the cutting direction determines the mechanisms of chip formation and influences the cutting quality. It was noted that for fibre orientation higher than 60°, the quality of the surface was revealed unacceptable. These conclusions were obtained independently of the particular shape of specimen tested and of the speed adopted

    The association between dyslipidemia and lethality of suicide attempts: A case-control study

    Evidence supports the existence of an association between dyslipidemia, psychiatric disorders, and suicide risk due to the effects of altered lipid profiles on serotoninergic neuron membranes. The aim of this study was to investigate the differences in c-reactive protein (CRP), thyroid functioning, total cholesterol, high lipoprotein density cholesterol (HDL-c), low-lipoprotein density cholesterol (LDL-c), and triglycerides (TG) serum levels in low lethality (LLSA) vs. high lethality suicide attempters (HLSA) within 24 h fromthe suicide attempt and inpatients who never attempted suicide (NAS). After attempting suicide, subjects were admitted to the emergency ward of the IRCCS Ospedale Policlinico San Martino and later to the section of Psychiatry from 1st August 2013 to 31st July 2018. Socio-demographic and clinical characteristics, serum lipids profile, CRP, and thyroid functioning were collected. The sample consisted of 133 individuals with a HLSA, 299 subjects with LLSA, and 200 patients NAS. HLSA subjects were more likely to be males and diagnosed as having a bipolar disorder. Furthermore, HLSA subgroup showed significantly lower total cholesterol and LDL-c levels and higher CRP serum levels compared to LLSA and control group, respectively. LLSA subgroup showed higher HDL-c levels compared to HLSA subgroup (no differences between HLSA and control group were observed). Additionally, the control group reported higher triglycerides levels compared to patients admitted to psychiatric ward for a suicide attempt. Only male gender, having a diagnosis of bipolar disorder, lower total cholesterol, and higher CRP serum levels predicted HLSA. Investigating the relation between dyslipidemia and the severity of suicide attempts may contribute to reveal the complex determinants underlying at-risk behaviors such as suicide, thus playing a relevant role in the possible prevention of this disabling phenomenon

    The relative absorption of fatty acids in brown trout (Salmo trutta) fed a commercial extruded pellet coated with different lipid sources

    The objective of the present study was to investigate the fatty acid absorption capabilities of brown trout (Salmo trut- ta) fed commercial extruded diets. Five commercial extruded pellets, different only in the lipid sources used for fat coat- ing, were tested on juvenile brown trout for 45 days. The trout were reared in fresh water at 14.6 ± 0.4° C and 7.7 ± 0.3 mg/l, temperature and dissolved oxygen, respectively. The tested lipid sources were fish oil, canola oil, oleine oil, swine fat and poultry fat. After the adaptation period faeces were collected by gently stripping from anaesthetized fish. Fatty acid analysis was performed on experimental diets and on collected faeces to evaluate the relative absorption capabilities of the trout digestive system with respect to each detected fatty acid. The use of the relative absorption efficiency (rAE) was opted to evaluate the intrinsic capability of each fatty acid to be absorbed. Brown trout showed a specific preferential order of absorption of the fatty acids, preferring shorter over longer chain fatty acids and prefer- ring the more unsaturated to the more saturated fatty acids. The fatty acid that showed the best relative absorbability was the C18:4n-3 (rAE = 5.14 ± 0.72), which has a fairly short carbon chain, but at the same time a high unsatura- tion level, followed by the C18:3n-3 (rAE = 3.38 ± 0.30). The fatty acid that showed the worst relative absorbability (rAE = 0.21 ± 0.02) was C24:1n-9

    Use of Spirulina (Arthrospira platensis) as protein source for the nutrition of juvenile tench (Tinca tinca)

    Spirulina is a protein source that have a high potential in formulation of fish feeding, as tested by several authors. Spirulina, in contrast to other protein terrestrial plant source, such as soybean meal, does not contain anti nutritional or toxic factors. Its composition include several nutrients, like antioxidants, vitamins and essential fatty acids. In our study we tested the growing response of tench to the substitution of fish meal with spirulina meal, focusing also to the variation of fatty acid profile and to the antioxidant proprieties of spirulina, using the formation of DNA adducts 8-oxo-7,8-dihydro-2\u2032-deoxyguanosine (8-oxodGuo) as an indicator of oxidatively generated DNA damage.The results of the present trial demonstrated that it is feasible partially to replace fish meal with spirulina meal in the diet of juvenile tench, although the fatty acids profile of fish resulted affected by the presence of Linoleic Acid, introduced by spirulina meal. Spirulina showed in vivo antioxidant capacity, since fish fed with the highest amount of spirulina presented the lowest DNA adduct formation. Spirulina could be a valuable and sustainable source of protein for aqua feed, taking into account the cost of this ingredient, which could decrease in near future

    Billiards in a general domain with random reflections

    We study stochastic billiards on general tables: a particle moves according to its constant velocity inside some domain D⊂Rd{\mathcal D} \subset {\mathbb R}^d until it hits the boundary and bounces randomly inside according to some reflection law. We assume that the boundary of the domain is locally Lipschitz and almost everywhere continuously differentiable. The angle of the outgoing velocity with the inner normal vector has a specified, absolutely continuous density. We construct the discrete time and the continuous time processes recording the sequence of hitting points on the boundary and the pair location/velocity. We mainly focus on the case of bounded domains. Then, we prove exponential ergodicity of these two Markov processes, we study their invariant distribution and their normal (Gaussian) fluctuations. Of particular interest is the case of the cosine reflection law: the stationary distributions for the two processes are uniform in this case, the discrete time chain is reversible though the continuous time process is quasi-reversible.     Effect of two salt concentrations on proximate composition, oxidation and fatty profile of missoltino, an Italian traditional fish preparation

    Missoltino is a traditional Italian product obtained from salted and dried twaite. The aim of this work is to study the effects of the use of two different levels of salt during the preparation of missoltino on the quality of product. Samples of twaite were collected during the summer of 2010 and used to make missoltini with 2 different salt concentrations, 80g kg-1 and 40g kg-1. Proximated and fatty acids composition were determined to chemically characterize this fish product and TBARS value was uset to determinate the oxidative statue. According to our results missoltini have a good nutritional value even if the content of polyunsaturated fatty acid was lower compared to fresh twaite. The reduction of salt usage could improve the nutritional quality of the product with a reduction of lipid oxidation during ripening
