    Can processes make relationships work? The Triple Helix between structure and action

    This contribution seeks to explore how complex adaptive theory can be applied at the conceptual level to unpack Triple Helix models. We use two cases to examine this issue – the Finnish Strategic Centres for Science, Technology & Innovation (SHOKs) and the Canadian Business-led Networks of Centres of Excellence (BL-NCE). Both types of centres are organisational structures that aspire to be business-led, with a considerable portion of their activities driven by (industrial) users’ interests and requirements. Reflecting on the centres’ activities along three dimensions – knowledge generation, consensus building and innovation – we contend that conceptualising the Triple Helix from a process perspective will improve the dialogue between stakeholders and shareholders

    Physikit: Data Engagement Through Physical Ambient Visualizations in the Home

    Internet of things (IoT) devices and sensor kits have the potential to democratize the access, use, and appropriation of data. Despite the increased availability of low cost sensors, most of the produced data is "black box" in nature: users often do not know how to access or interpret data. We propose a "human-data design" approach in which end-users are given tools to create, share, and use data through tangible and physical visualizations. This paper introduces Physikit, a system designed to allow users to explore and engage with environmental data through physical ambient visualizations. We report on the design and implementation of Physikit, and present a two-week field study which showed that participants got an increased sense of the meaning of data, embellished and appropriated the basic visualizations to make them blend into their homes, and used the visualizations as a probe for community engagement and social behavior

    The impact of developer team sizes on the structural attributes of software

    It is established that the internal quality of software is a key determinant of the total cost of ownership of that software. The objective of this research is to determine the impact that the development team’s size has on the internal structural attributes of a codebase and, in doing so, we consider the impact that the team’s size may have on the internal quality of the software that they produce. In this paper we leverage the wealth of data available in the open-source domain by mining detailed data from 1000 projects in Google Code and, coupled with one of the most established of object-oriented metric suites, we isolate and identify the effect that the development team size has on internal structural attributes of the software produced. We will find that some measures of functional decomposition are enhanced when we compare projects authored by fewer developers against those authored by a larger number of developers while measures of cohesion and complexity are degraded

    An ABS control logic based on wheel force measurement

    The paper presents an anti-lock braking system (ABS) control logic based on the measurement of the longitudinal forces at the hub bearings. The availability of force information allows to design a logic that does not rely on the estimation of the tyre-road friction coefficient, since it continuously tries to exploit the maximum longitudinal tyre force. The logic is designed by means of computer simulation and then tested on a specific hardware in the loop test bench: the experimental results confirm that measured wheel force can lead to a significant improvement of the ABS performances in terms of stopping distance also in the presence of road with variable friction coefficien

    Spatial tethering of kinases to their substrates relaxes evolutionary constraints on specificity

    Signal transduction proteins are often multi-domain proteins that arose through the fusion of previously independent proteins. How such a change in the spatial arrangement of proteins impacts their evolution and the selective pressures acting on individual residues is largely unknown. We explored this problem in the context of bacterial two-component signalling pathways, which typically involve a sensor histidine kinase that specifically phosphorylates a single cognate response regulator. Although usually found as separate proteins, these proteins are sometimes fused into a so-called hybrid histidine kinase. Here, we demonstrate that the isolated kinase domains of hybrid kinases exhibit a dramatic reduction in phosphotransfer specificity in vitro relative to canonical histidine kinases. However, hybrid kinases phosphotransfer almost exclusively to their covalently attached response regulator domain, whose effective concentration exceeds that of all soluble response regulators. These findings indicate that the fused response regulator in a hybrid kinase normally prevents detrimental cross-talk between pathways. More generally, our results shed light on how the spatial properties of signalling pathways can significantly affect their evolution, with additional implications for the design of synthetic signalling systems.National Science Foundation (U.S.) (CAREER Award)National Science Foundation (U.S.).
