Growth of Hg1−xCdxTe single crystals by travelling heater method under accelerated crucible rotation conditions
The accelerated crucible rotation technique (ACRT) has been applied to the THM growth of Hg1−xCdxTe crystals to grow the crystals at a higher rate. These higher growth rates, which should be achieved by extending the regions of conventional stirring towards the interfaces, have been used in an attempt to explain the results in terms of simple constitutional supercooling arguments. Some different ACRT cycles which fulfil simple hydrodynamic and geometric criteria have been studied. The grown crystals were investigated with respect to their metallurgical homogeneity and their structural perfection. These properties have not been degraded by increasing the growth rate from 1.5 to 8.5 mm per day
QCD Pressure at Two Loops in the Temporal Gauge
We apply the method of \underline{zeta} functions, together with the
-prescription for the temporal gauge, to evaluate the thermodynamic
pressure in QCD at finite temperature . Working in the imaginary-time
formalism and employing a special version of the unified-gauge prescription, we
show that the pure-gauge contribution to the pressure at two loops is given by
P_2^{\mbox{{\scriptsize gauge}}} = -(g^2/144)N_cN_gT^4, where and
denote the number of colours and gluons, respectively. This result agrees with

Comparison of two approaches to forced convection in crystal growth of II-VI compounds by THM
Hg1 - xCdxTe and Cd1 - xZnxTe single crystals were grown by the tracwelling heater method (THM), applying two different techniques of artificially stirring the solution zone. Accelerated crucible rotation (ACRT) was used in a vertical growth arrangement and compared a technique with constant rotation around the horizontal axis of the ampoule. The dominant hydrodynamic mechanisms of noth methods are discribed by the rotating disc model and are suggested to be almost identical with respect to the growth conditions at the interface. Convective flow is effectively enhanced adhacent to the growing crystal, where the matter transport is regarded as the rate-limiting step of solution growth. Inclusion density analysis by IR microscopy was used to characterise the crystals of Cd1 - xZnxTe grown at different rates. It was shown that forced convection allows an increase in the crystal growth rate from a few mm day-1 with ACRT or horizontally rotating THM

Health and wellbeing in a deep plan office space
This research tracks public sector employees as they move from a 1960s office building into a purpose-built, environmentally sound, office accommodation. It hypothesises that in this instance the attempts to change the image and effectiveness of an organisation by changing workspace layouts has been ineffective and considers the consequent implications for individuals working in that organisation. It looks at the likely relationship between health and wellbeing of individuals and productivity. The case study is founded in the public sector but the findings are equally applicable to private sector workplaces
GROUNDHOG ORACLES AND THEIR FOREBEARS
Groundhog Day animal weather forecasting ceremonies continue to proliferate around the United States despite a lack of public confidence in the oracles. This essay probes religio-historical and original ethnographic perspectives to offer a psychological argument for why these ceremonies exist. Employing Paul Shepard’s notion of a felt loss of sacred, intimate relationships with nonhuman nature, as well as Peter Homans’ concept of the monument that enables mourning, this essay argues that groundhog oracles serve as monuments that allow humans experientially to attempt to heal lost sacred relationships with animals like weather forecasting bears, hedgehogs, and badgers
Enchantment with Tibetan Lamas in the United States
This article explores the relationships of non-Tibetan American disciples with Tibetan spiritual teachers (lamas) in terms of theory, practice, and experiential meaning. Contrary to some previous studies, data for this article indicate that submission to the lama is not an end in itself, but rather ideally provides an opportunity for disciples to become lamas themselves. Many disciples may find personal empowerment, oriented around the theme of compassionate social action. Understanding that surrender to the spiritual teacher is only a means to a personally empowering goal clarifies our understanding of many Asian religious practices in the West
Learning Love from a Tiger: Approaches to Nature in an American Buddhist Monastery
In current debates about Buddhist approaches to the non-human natural world, studies describe Buddhism variously as anthropocentric, bio-centric or eco-centric. These perspectives derive for the most part from examinations of philosophical and normative aspects of the tradition without much attention to moments when embodied practice diverges from religious ideals. Responding to the need for narrative thick descriptions of lived Buddhist attitudes toward nature, I ethnographically explore a Vietnamese monastery in the United States. There I find multifaceted Buddhist approaches to nature which sometimes disclose disunity between theory and practice. Philosophically and normatively, this monastery embraces eco-centrism through notions of interconnectedness, instructions for meditation, environmental lifestyles, and non-violent ideals. In practice, however, the monastery displays a measure of anthropocentrism in terms of rhetoric which values humans more than the rest of the natural world, human-centered motivations for environmental lifestyles, and limits on non-violence which favor human lives
LIFT: 21st century health care centres
Purpose
To examine the processes used to procure and develop new primary health care premises in the United Kingdom and in particular the use of the private finance initiative and related methods.
Design/methodology/approach
An in-depth study of two local improvement finance trust schemes to procure new primary health care premises. These are contrasted against the ad-hoc arrangements for the traditional procurement of general practice doctor's surgery premises. Interviews were undertaken with key participants on both sides of the negotiations.
Findings
The process can be an unequal struggle between large consortia and small, inexperienced clients that may result in a wasted opportunity to obtain the optimum design and price.
Research limitations/implications
The research is limited to early use of the local improvement finance trust process and procedures; client bodies, such as primary care trusts, may benefit from the experience of earlier projects. The method of procurement will evolve and be refined and will become more widely used, not only for health but also in the education sector. Further examination of the procurement of education buildings using similar methods would be beneficial.
