    The current state of bankruptcy law concerning chapter 13 educational expense deductions from a debtor\u27s disposable income is cloudy at best. The vague guidelines provided by the drafters of the Bankruptcy Code have created a system where this issue is analyzed on a case-by-case basis. Bankruptcy judges possess great discretion in deciding whether a particular tuition deduction is reasonably necessary, as required by 11 U.S.C. § 1325(b)(2), creating inconsistent decisions across jurisdictions. BAPCPA created even more chaos in this context, as it split debtors into two groups depending on their income and forced judges to use the new means test to evaluate certain debtors\u27 tuition claims

    Scaffolding Choice, Increasing Access: A Summer Initiative to Promote Middle School Students’ Book Reading

    Middle schools often mandate summer reading as a means of stemming summer learning loss, but research suggests that many students do not read any books during the summer months. Limited book access and difficulties self-selecting books are two barriers that can impact students’ summer reading practices. To address these challenges, students in one Grade 7 classroom participated in an initiative designed to scaffold book choices prior to summer break and to increase students’ access to high-interest books. Compared to students in a randomly selected business-as-usual classroom, students who participated in the book scaffolding initiative were more likely to read at least one book over the summer. The author describes ways in which dedicating class time to helping middle school students discover reading interests, coupled with providing free access to books, can impact summer reading practices

    Early diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases in workers: role of standard and advanced echocardiography

    Cardiovascular disease (CVD) still remains the main cause of morbidity and mortality and consequently early diagnosis is of paramount importance. Working conditions can be regarded as an additional risk factor for CVD. Since different aspects of the job may affect vascular health differently, it is important to consider occupation from multiple perspectives to better assess occupational impacts on health. Standard echocardiography has several targets in the cardiac population, as the assessment of myocardial performance, valvular and/or congenital heart disease, and hemodynamics. Three-dimensional echocardiography gained attention recently as a viable clinical tool in assessing left ventricular (LV) and right ventricular (RV), volume, and shape. Two-dimensional (2DSTE) and, more recently, three-dimensional speckle tracking echocardiography (3DSTE) have also emerged as methods for detection of global and regional myocardial dysfunction in various cardiovascular diseases, and applied to the diagnosis of subtle LV and RV dysfunction. Although these novel echocardiographic imaging modalities have advanced our understanding of LV and RV mechanics, overlapping patterns often show challenges that limit their clinical utility. This review will describe the current state of standard and advanced echocardiography in early detection (secondary prevention) of CVD and address future directions for this potentially important diagnostic strategy

    Causal topography of visual cortex in perceptual learning.

    Individuals are able to improve their visual skill with practice, a phenomenon called Visual Perceptual Learning (VPL). We previously observed that after training on a difficult shape identification task, the dorsal visual regions (i.e. right V2d/V3 and right lateral occipital, LO) corresponding to the trained visual quadrant, and their homologous in the opposite hemisphere, exhibited a selective activation at the end of the learning. By contrast, such modulation was not observed in the ventral visual regions, corresponding to the untrained quadrants. The causal role of the trained visual cortex was previously showed in a TMS study as its inactivation impaired behavioral performance to learned stimuli. Here, using the same experimental design, we employed TMS over the homologous of the trained area (i.e. left V2d/V3) as well as over the untrained region (i.e. right V4) to causally map the visual network during the perceptual learning. We report a decrease of accuracy after TMS over left V2d/V3 as compared to both right V4 and Sham (inactive stimulation) conditions. Importantly, TMS effect was correlated with the degree of learning, such that subjects with lower accuracy at the end of the training exhibited stronger TMS impairment. These results provide evidence that segregated regions within the visual network are causally involved in visual perceptual learning

    Resting-state modulation of alpha rhythms by interference with angular gyrus activity

    The default mode network is active during restful wakefulness and suppressed during goal-driven behavior. We hypothesize that inhibitory interference with spontaneous ongoing, that is, not task-driven, activity in the angular gyrus (AG), one of the core regions of the default mode network, will enhance the dominant idling EEG alpha rhythms observed in the resting state. Fifteen right-handed healthy adult volunteers underwent to this study. Compared with sham stimulation, magnetic stimulation (1 Hz for 1 min) over both left and right AG, but not over FEF or intraparietal sulcus, core regions of the dorsal attention network, enhanced the dominant alpha power density (8-10 Hz) in occipitoparietal cortex. Furthermore, right AG-rTMS enhanced intrahemispheric alpha coherence (8-10 Hz). These results suggest that AG plays a causal role in the modulation of dominant low-frequency alpha rhythms in the resting-state condition
