The Spanish Water dog (P.A.E.) has been conserved in the protected areas of the Andalusian country as a sheep herd dog. In the future the conservation of this breed as a functional dog will be based on this traditional actitude, but maintaining other uses such as hunter dog, police dog, etc. An actuation plan in two levels, is demanded; one about biological aspects directed to avoid the inconvenient of the inbreeding; and another one to increase the support of de administrations as a functional dog breed.

A preliminary phaneroptical characterisation of the Spanish Alano Dog Breed is done studying, on a random sample formed by 135 specimens, six external variables: coat colour and distribution; hair type; mucosae, and iris colour; type of bite; and absence of premolars. We have concluded that this breed is characterised by the presentation of yellow and brindled coats, with other coat colours as residuals, standing out the combined black and brindled coat, not present in other related breeds, what could be considered as a breed marker character. The breed is also characterised by short hair, black pigmented mucosae , brown iris, with general presentation of a mask. The dentition characteristics are the presence of a prognatic bite (slight) and absence of premolars, both characters related to the origin of the breed.

Frequencies of deletereus character in the spanish water dog affecting the breed conservation

321 puppies of the Spanish Water Dog Breed have been used to study the frequency of presentation of several deleterious characters between the years 1995 and 1998. The enogmatism and the monorquidism shown frequencies relatively low, but we stand out these characters because their control is very important for the relationship with respect the adaptive capacity of these animals. In the same way the prognatism and the absence of premolars were present with a frequency slightly high, it must take into account in the selection criteria of the breed. By another side, we found a signifficative association between the presence of heath anomalies and slightly high populational levels of inbreeding, and then we have to avoid these breeding practices in the racial lines presenting this defect.

We are presenting a morphological study of the black varieties of the Iberian pig breed considering the Lampiño, Entrepelado, Mamellado, Silvela and Mamellado x Silvela strains, according to the Association of Breeders (AECERIBER) criteria. From the quantitative variables study, few significative differences among strains and sexes has been found, with absence of interactions between both factors. Also a posteriori homogeneity among means has been found significative association between strains and the frequencies of the coat colour, the types of hair, the hear type and the complementary particularities in the females, while in males a total independence have been shown.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: This study tries to assess the endothelial function in vivo using flow-mediated dilatation (FMD) and several biomarkers of endothelium formation/restoration and damage in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) syndrome at baseline and after three months with CPAP therapy. DESIGN: Observational study, before and after CPAP therapy. SETTING AND PATIENTS: We studied 30 patients with apnoea/hypopnoea index (AHI) >15/h that were compared with themselves after three months of CPAP therapy. FMD was assessed non-invasively in vivo using the Laser-Doppler flowmetry. Circulating cell-free DNA (cf-DNA) and microparticles (MPs) were measured as markers of endothelial damage and the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) was determined as a marker of endothelial restoration process. MEASUREMENTS AND RESULTS: After three month with CPAP, FMD significantly increased (1072.26 ± 483.21 vs. 1604.38 ± 915.69 PU, p< 0.005) cf-DNA and MPs significantly decreased (187.93 ± 115.81 vs. 121.28 ± 78.98 pg/ml, p<0.01, and 69.60 ± 62.60 vs. 39.82 ± 22.14 U/μL, p<0.05, respectively) and VEGF levels increased (585.02 ± 246.06 vs. 641.11 ± 212.69 pg/ml, p<0.05). These changes were higher in patients with more severe disease. There was a relationship between markers of damage (r = -0.53, p<0.005) but not between markers of damage and restoration, thus suggesting that both types of markers should be measured together. CONCLUSIONS: CPAP therapy improves FMD. This improvement may be related to an increase of endothelial restoration process and a decrease of endothelial damage

Giant aneurysmal bone cyst of the mandible with unusual presentation

Aneurysmal bone cysts are rare benign lesions of bone tissue, infrequent in craneofacial skeleton with regard to other structures like long bones or the spine. They are composed of sinusoidal and vascular spaces blood-filled and surrounded by fibrous tissue septa. We present a case of a 29-year-old Caucasian male with a big swelling in the left mandible associated to pain and rapid growth. He referred previous extraction of the left inferior third molar. On the X-ray study, an expansive multilocular and high vascularized bony lesion within the mandibular angle was observed. It produced expansion and destruction of lingual and buccal cortex. An incisional biopsy was performed showing a fibrous tissue with blood-filled spaces lesion suggestive of an aneurysmal bone cyst. After selective embolization of the tumour, surgical resection was done with curettage and immediate reconstruction of the defect with an anterior iliac crest graft. Aneurysmal bone cysts are non-neoplastic but locally aggressive tumours with occasional rapid growth that may be differenciated from other multilocular process like ameloblastoma, ossifying fibroma, epithelial cyst, giant cell granuloma and sarcomas. Treatment of choice consists on conservative surgical excision of the mass with curettage or enucleation. When resection creates a big defect, primary surgical reconstruction is recommended

We are presenting a morphological study of the red varieties (Torbiscal, Retinto Portugués, Retinto Extremeño, Dorado Gaditano) of the Iberian pig breed and Jabugo Spotted, according to the Association of Breeders (AECERIBER) criteria. We have obtained significant differences among strains and sexes in the quantitative variables analysed also interaction between both factors has been detected. The qualitative variables have shown independence between strains and coat colour, type of hears, type of hair for males and females. Only the complementary particularities have been associated to the strains.

Foundation: several studies have been published by different groups of work about the evaluation of the renal function in nephrectomized patients, showing varied results. In some cases it is reported the deterioration of the remaining kidney, and not in others. Objective: to describe the adaptative response regarding renal and clinical evolution in nephrectomized patients. Methods: cross study in which it was evaluated the renal function before and at two years of nephrectomy of 38 patients. The variables analyzed were glomerular filtration rate, creatinine and serum urea and associated diseases. Rates, percentages and Squared Chi for qualitative variables so as mean, standard deviation and Students T test for quantitative ones. Results: serum creatinine mean after nephrectomy was superior to the pre-nephrectomy (102 umol vs 126) p=0,05. Glomerular Filtration rate decreased after nephrectomy (62 ml/min vs 43 ml/min) p=0,02. Hypertensive and diabetic patients had a higher deterioration of the renal function, p≤0,05. Conclusion: nephrectomy produces a deterioration of the renal function at two years of follow up mainly in diabetic and hypertensive patients

    Get PDF
