    Tumblr was a trans technology: the meaning, importance, history, and future of trans technologies

    Building from previous researchers’ conceptions of queer technologies, we consider what it means to be a trans technology. This research study draws from interviews with Tumblr transition bloggers (n = 20), along with virtual ethnography, trans theory, and trans technological histories, using Tumblr as a case study to understand how social technologies can meet the needs of trans communities. Tumblr supported trans experiences by enabling users to change over time within a network of similar others, separate from their network of existing connections, and to embody (in a digital space) identities that would eventually become material. Further, before 2018 policy changes banning “adult” content, Tumblr upheld policies and an economic model that allowed erotic content needed for intersectional trans community building. We argue that these aspects made Tumblr a trans technology.     Primary cementless stems in septic hip revision: Indications and results

    Purpose: The aim of our work is to evaluate results obtained from a cohort of patients affected by periprosthetic joint infection and treated with a primary cementless stem in a two-stage technique framework. Methods: Eighty-four patients were evaluated at a mean follow-up of 37.4 months. The main demographic, surgical, clinical, and radiographic data were recorded. A femoral window for stem removal was performed in 33 patients. Results: Statistically significant improvement was noted for both the Harris Hip score and the Oxford Hip score. Postsurgical complications included thigh pain in three patients, subsidence (>2 mm) in one patient, implant dislocation in two patients, cup revision in one patient, implant revision for septic failure in two patients, and stem revision for varus position in one patient. The stem survivorship rate was 96.3%. There were no significant differences between the groups in which a cortical window was created or not. Conclusion: Femoral stem revision with primary cementless stems is a viable option in selected patients undergoing two-stage hip revision surgery. Correct indication is a cornerstone of good outcome. The use of a cortical window does not affect the final outcome or implant survivorship rate

    Morphometric differences in the grasshopper Cornops aquaticum (Bruner, 1906) from South America and South Africa

    The semi-aquatic grasshopper Cornops aquaticum is native to South America and inhabits lowlands from southern Mexico to Central Argentina and Uruguay. It is host-specific to aquatic plants in the genera Eichhornia and Pontederia. A quarantine population has existed in South Africa for 10 y, and it is planned to release it there as a biological control agent of water hyacinth, E. crassipes. Various studies of C. aquaticum are coordinated under HICWA (www.mpil-ploen.mpg.de). This paper compares the morphometry of the release population and 11 native populations in South America. We tested four hypotheses: 1) South African and South American populations of C. aquaticum differ in morphology; 2) the South African laboratory population is more similar to other isolated populations in South America than to nonisolated populations; 3) morphology differs across sites; 4) morphology differs with host plant. South African populations differed from continental nonisolated populations, but not from continental isolated ones. Isolated populations presented smaller individuals than nonisolated, but there was also a change in male morphology: while in nonisolated populations male wing length was similar to their body length, in isolated populations, male wings were smaller than body length. Females were larger when on Eicchornia azurea than on E. crassipes, while males presented larger wings than their body on E. azurea, and similar lengths on E. crassipes. These morphological changes may have resulted from phenotypic plasticity, selection for small size, or because of a loss of genetic diversity in quantitative traits.Fil: Adis, Joachim.     A survey study of evidence-based medicine training in US and Canadian medical schools

    PURPOSE: The authors conducted a survey examining (1) the current state of evidence-based medicine (EBM) curricula in US and Canadian medical schools and corresponding learning objectives, (2) medical educators\u27 and librarians\u27 participation in EBM training, and (3) barriers to EBM training. METHODS: A survey instrument with thirty-four closed and open-ended questions was sent to curricular deans at US and Canadian medical schools. The survey sought information on enrollment and class size; EBM learning objectives, curricular activities, and assessment approaches by year of training; EBM faculty; EBM tools; barriers to implementing EBM curricula and possible ways to overcome them; and innovative approaches to EBM education. Both qualitative and quantitative methods were used for data analysis. Measurable learning objectives were categorized using Bloom\u27s taxonomy. RESULTS: One hundred fifteen medical schools (77.2%) responded. Over half (53%) of the 900 reported learning objectives were measurable. Knowledge application was the predominant category from Bloom\u27s categories. Most schools integrated EBM into other curricular activities; activities and formal assessment decreased significantly with advanced training. EBM faculty consisted primarily of clinicians, followed by basic scientists and librarians. Various EBM tools were used, with PubMed and the Cochrane database most frequently cited. Lack of time in curricula was rated the most significant barrier. National agreement on required EBM competencies was an extremely helpful factor. Few schools shared innovative approaches. CONCLUSIONS: Schools need help in overcoming barriers related to EBM curriculum development, implementation, and assessment. IMPLICATIONS: Findings can provide a starting point for discussion to develop a standardized competency framework

    The heterogeneous spatial and temporal patterns of behavior of small pelagic fish in an array of Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs)

    Identifying spatial and temporal patterns can reveal the driving factors that govern the behavior of fish in their environment. In this study, we characterized the spatial and temporal occupation of 37 acoustically tagged bigeye scads (Selar Crumenophthalmus) in an array of shallow Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) to clarify the mechanism that leads fish to associate with FADs. A comparison of the number of visits and residence times exhibited by the fish at different FADs revealed a strong variability over the array of FADS, with the emergence of a leading FAD, which recorded the majority of visits and retained the fish for a longer period of time. We found diel variability in the residence times, with fish associated at daytime and exploring the array of FADs at nighttime. We demonstrated that this diel temporal pattern was amplified in the leading FAD. We identified a 24-hour periodicity for a subset of individuals aggregated to the leading FAD, thus suggesting that those fish were able to find this FAD after night excursions. The modeling of fish movements based on a Monte Carlo sampling of inter-FAD transitions revealed that the observed spatial heterogeneity in the number of visits could not be explained through simple array-connectivity arguments. Similarly, we demonstrated that the high residence times recorded at the leading FAD were not due to the spatial arrangement of individual fish having different associative characters. We discussed the relationships between these patterns of association with the FADs, the exploration of the FAD array and the possible effects of social interactions and environmental factors.Comment: 21 pages, 9 figures + 2 supplementary figure

    On quantitative analysis of interband recombination dynamics: Theory and application to bulk ZnO

    The issue of the quantitative analysis of time-resolved photoluminescence experiments is addressed by developing and describing two approaches for determination of unimolecular lifetime, bimolecular recombination coefficient, and equilibrium free-carrier concentration, based on a quite general second-order expression of the electron-hole recombination rate. Application to the case of band-edge emission of ZnO single crystals is reported, evidencing the signature of sub-nanosecond second-order recombination dynamics for optical transitions close to the interband excitation edge. The resulting findings are in good agreement with the model prediction and further confirm the presence, formerly evidenced in literature by non-optical methods, of near-surface conductive layers in ZnO crystals with sheet charge densities of about 3{\div}5*10^13 cm^-2Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

    Relación fiscal Nación-provincias: reformas realizadas en 2016 y temas pendientes para el futuro

    En 2016 se han producido varias novedades con relación a los tributos nacionales y su distribución entre Nación y Provincias, ya sea por cambios en tributos que se comparten con provincias (Ganancias, Derechos de Exportación e Impuesto al Valor Agregado –IVA–), como por el arreglo alcanzado para la devolución (gradual) a provincias de la detracción del 15% a la coparticipación que desde 1992 va a la Administración Nacional de Seguridad Social (ANSES). Además, se fijaron nuevos compromisos en materia de responsabilidad fiscal y se anunció el objetivo de discutir una nueva Ley de Coparticipación Federal de Impuestos en años venideros. Ante el nuevo contexto, los principales objetivos de este trabajo son, primero, exponer las principales características de las relaciones fiscales Nación – Provincias en el punto de partida del nuevo gobierno. Luego, estimar los efectos sobre los recursos de Nación y Provincias originados en los cambios tributarios y en la distribución de transferencias fiscales efectuados durante el año 2016. Finalmente, se plantean y en algunos casos se cuantifican algunos de los principales desafíos pendientes que quedan en materia de federalismo fiscal para los próximos años. Con tales objetivos, el documento se organiza como sigue. En la primera sección, se plantea la situación anterior a 2016, con relación a la distribución primaria efectiva entre Nación y Provincias, la distribución secundaria efectiva entre provincias, la distribución de transferencias discrecionales a gobiernos intermedios, la situación existente en materia de resultado fiscal en Nación y Provincias y los resultados consolidados de los particulares mecanismos de nivelación fiscal entre provincias aplicados en Argentina. En la segunda sección se exponen los principales cambios ocurridos en 2016 en la relación Nación - Provincias, y se cuantifican sus efectos en la distribución primaria y secundaria efectiva. En la tercera sección, se enumeran e intentan cuantificar los principales desafíos pendientes en materia de federalismo fiscal en Argentina para los próximos años.Facultad de Ciencias Económica
