    Get PDF
The results presented in this paper are aim at examining and comparing the migratory events occurred betwixt two countries which have different social and economic conditions. The information developed along this text is, therefore, an initial assessment on migration between Canada and Colombia. The author used hermeneutics as a main methodological tool for conducting this study. This paper concludes that, although there are a range of motivations behind the decision to leaving one’s home country, the pursuit for better economic conditions is the dominant factor

This paper depicts the Colombian immigration to Canada that is carried out for entrepreneurial and economic purposes. The author has based his findings on the Business Immigration Program to describe and analyze the immigration flows of Colombian individuals who arrive to Canada to start their own economic activities. According to the data obtained, there is a significant number of Colombians in Canada that belong to the category of economic immigrants; this classification is part of the Business Immigration Program created by the Canadian government as a plan to attract immigrant entrepreneurs, foreign investors and self-employed persons

Japan's labor immigration: challenges to Japan's economic future

This paper aims at presenting the current situation of the Japanese labor market and the government requirements regarding foreign workers. Historical analysis is developed in order to offer a glimpse of the current migratory flows occurring in the country. The author concludes that a complex paradox concerning the foreign immigration perception is still present among Japanese authorities because on the one hand, governmental authorities in Japan demand several inflows of working immigrants to supply the required industry and market’s job positions; but on the other hand, the social and cultural requirements that immigrants must complete and fulfil to integrate properly into society, are hindering the very assimilation of foreign workers

Modeling charge and energy transfer in organic molecular materials

The understanding of nanoscale physics, chemistry and biology still poses unanswered questions such as how the optical and electrical properties of materials evolve from those of individual molecules, and organic semiconductors fall in this class of materials. The main processes occurring in such systems are both charge and energy transfer, responsible for the practical operation of electronic devices. Therefore, an understanding at a fundamental level of the electronic properties of the involved molecules can help the optimization of each process, for a better global performance of the material. My three years PhD activity was developed along two major lines of research: charge and energy transport, both based on the computational investigation of intramolecular properties and intermolecular interactions. Strictly related to energy transport are the optical properties of condensed phase materials and how they evolve from those of isolated molecular components. The charge transport properties were investigated for several organic molecular crystals showing semiconducting behavior, whose experimental crystal structure and charge mobilities are available. As the same interactions that drive the transport of charge play also a role in determining the optical properties and the energy transport in molecular aggregates, in my research activity I investigated such processes as well. In this regard, I took into account a dimer of perylene-bisimide, with the aim of elucidating the role of charge transfer states and their effect on optoelectronic properties. Additionally, to assess the propagation of excited states in a molecular material a kinetic constant is required, similarly to charge transport, but the expression in this case includes the overlap between the absorption spectrum of the acceptor and the emission spectrum of the donor. To this end I also developed a code devoted to the simulation of linear absorption and emission spectra of an isolated molecule, starting from computed quantum mechanical properties

The current boom of Virtual Social Networks and the image of Colombia as a country of emigration provide a context for a topic of study to explore the interactive dynamics that migrants through these virtual networks. In order to conduct preliminary research in the area of International Migration and social networks in Colombia, this paper provides a a conceptual proposal, which might serve as a starting point for further research and results applicable to policy development and social practices.

Niche modeling reveals life history shifts in birds at La Brea over the last twenty millennia

A species presence at a particular site can change over time, resulting in temporally dynamic species pools. Ecological niche models provide estimates of species presence at different time intervals. The avifauna of La Brea includes approximately 120 species dating to approximately 15,000 years ago. Niche models predicted presence at the Last Glacial Maximum for over 90% of 89 landbird species. This confirms that niche modeling produces sensible range estimates at the Last Glacial Maximum. For 97 currently local species that are as yet undocumented at La Brea over 90% were predicted to occur; absence is due to insufficient study, lack of the ecological niche, transient occurrence or a behavioral ability to avoid entrapment. Our 366 niche models provide a prospective checklist of the landbird fauna of La Brea. The models indicate fluidity in life history strategies and a higher proportion of resident birds at the LGM (88% to 60%). We evaluated a subset of 103 species in breeding and winter periods using two climate models (MIROC−ESM, CCSM4) with a variety of differing parameters, finding differences in 5% of the niche models. Niche breadths in bark-foraging birds changed little between the present and LGM, suggesting that greater species diversity at the LGM was due to greater niche availability rather than contractions of niche breadths (i.e., niche partitioning)

The aim of this study was to establish the pregnancy period of paca by means of ultrasound use. Nine pregnant pacas were periodically scanned with a two-frequency sectorial electronic transducer of 5.0 and 7.5 MHz, in B mode, from ultrasound detection of embryo vesicle or fetus until the parturition. Animals were placed in an iron-bar squeeze cage and remained in standing position during sessions. A dark cloth was used to cover the cage and fruits were offered during ultrasound session to avoid aggressive reactions. The more premature occurred detection of pregnancy, the greater the period of ultrasound examination until the birth of the offspring. All gestation delivered only one newborn weighting 796.5 ± 74.36 grams (mean value ± standard error of the sample) and 33.46 ± 0.60 centimeters (mean value ± standard error of the sample) of length (from rostral edge of nose and distal portion of tail).

Asses the change in neck staging in patients with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of oral cavity and oropharynx after new methodology for histopathological analysis of lymph nodes of surgical specimens from neck dissections, with step serial sections of all harvested lymph nodes, in clinically neck negative patients (cN0). It was also studied the impact of this changes on survival. Materials and methods. Retrospective study with 21 patients previously classified as cN0 undergoing surgery for excision of the primary tumor and elective neck dissection. Initially was held to revise the original pathology slides and, subsequently, step-serial sectioning with 5 µm thick and re-examination of the slides. In order to assess the impact of change in disease-free survival was held Kaplan-Meier analysis (IC 95%). Results. After conventional evaluation, 14 patients were found to be without lymphatic metastases (pN0) and seven (33%) were affected (pN+). The analysis with step serial section has detected three other patients with lymphatic metastases, previously classified as pN0, and one patient previously as N1 increased to N2b with 10 pN(+) cases (48%). There was an increase of 43% in patients with lymph node metastases and 19% of increase in neck staging after the new histopathological standardization, but without impact on survival (p = 0.554). Conclusion. Analysis of lymph nodes in surgical specimens of neck dissections with step-serial sectioning allowed an increase of 43% of necks with occult metastases and increase of neck staging in 19% when compared to conventional techniqueMestradoOtorrinolaringologiaMestre em Ciências Médica
