    Get PDF
This study aims at developing a valid and reliable scale to determine primary school students’ sense of school belonging. In this respect, the relevant literature on the concept of belonging was reviewed; interviews were conducted with field experts and primary school students to determine items to be included in the scale. An item pool was created based on the findings of these processes. Later, a pilot form was prepared by taking the opinions of 2 field and 2 measurement and evaluation experts to ensure that the scale items represent the structure measured. This form was administered to 254 primary school students studying in the 2018-2019 academic year, and the final scale was obtained as a result of exploratory factor analysis was applied to 287 primary school students in a different school. For validity evidence, exploratory factor analysis (EFA), confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), convergent and discriminant analysis and item analysis; for reliability, findings of Cronbach Alpha and composite reliability coefficients were used. According to the exploratory factor analysis, the scale consisted of 3 factors with 13 items, and the total variance explained was 52.57%. As a result of the second-order confirmatory factor analysis of the obtained structure, the fit indices of the model showed that it was verified. The internal consistency coefficient of the developed model was α = .92 and the composite reliability coefficient was .93. These findings showed that the scale had psychometric properties to be used in future research

The purpose of this action research study is to improve the preservice elementary teachers' use of library. The sample of the study consisted of 42 preservice teachers. The data were obtained through the survey of attitude towards library usage, the survey of library usage, and interview forms containing open-ended questions. The data obtained via the attitude survey were analyzed using SPSS program version 15.0 and t-test analyses were carried out. The responses of participants were evaluated via descriptive analysis. It was determined that the frequency of preservice teachers' use of library was very low and to enhance that based on the literature, an action research plan was developed. The results revealed that the participants' library usage was improved positively after the administration of the action research plan. Based on the positive results obtained after the implementation of the action plan in this study, suggestions were provided for the use of some activities about library

Analysing the effectiveness of the 1750 tonne shields at Moranbah North Mine

    Get PDF
Moranbah North Mine has a challenging geotechnical environment that historically resulted in cavity formation on the longwall face with its an associated reduction in productivity. Due to the complex geology at the mine, the increased depths of cover in future panels and the aging of the previous 980 t shields, longwall face stability became a concern. In order to ensure effective strata control in future panels, a new set of 1750 t powered supports were installed into the longwall 108 panel in 2009. These shields were, and still remain, the highest rated capacity shields in the world. This paper presents the results of an investigation into the effectiveness and necessity of the new powered supports. The investigation was undertaken in the form of a comparative analysis to determine the relative effectiveness of the two sets of different capacity shields by analysing the performance of the shields in panels that were directly adjacent and, subsequently, subject to similar conditions. Anglo American has plans to commence two additional longwall mining operations in the same region and the outcome of the investigation will allow the suitability of the larger capacity shields to be determined for the future operations

Risk-Benefit Analysis in Coal Mine Roof Support Design Using Stochastic Modelling Technique

    Get PDF
Various roof support design methodologies have been used in Australian coal mines, which include analytical, numerical and empirical models. These models are mainly based on the deterministic approach in which a single factor of safety is calculated for the roof support design. The main limitation of this design methodology is that it fails to account for the inherent variations existing in rock mass properties and other roof reinforcement elements. To overcome this issue, an improved design methodology based on stochastic approaches has been developed in which both the design inputs parameters and the outcomes (i.e., factor of safety) are expressed as probability distribution functions. This paper focuses on the application of stochastic modelling technique to evaluate the underground roof support strategies currently used in an underground coal mine located in the Bowen Basin. The starting point of the analysis is the existing analytical roof support models that identified the relevant design inputs in consideration. Based on the best fit probability distributions of input parameters determined by goodness of fit tests, a risk based design is conducted to quantitatively evaluate the risk of roof fall fatality under specific roof support system by using the probability of failure from Monte Carlo simulation and the associated underground personnel exposure

Development of a cavity prediction model for longwall mining

    Get PDF
Advancements in technology over the past decade, in data collection and computer modelling systems, have created opportunities to develop and improve the current methods of predicting roof stability issues in longwall mining operations. The ability to accurately predict roof instabilities and cavity developments has great benefits for the coal industry. Early prediction will allow for appropriate actions to be taken to avoid such events, removing the potential for harm to personnel and loss of production. A case study of Moranbah North Mine, investigating the causes of roof stability issues, concentrating on the development of roof cavities in the longwall face is presented. Results from an investigation of the effect of particular geological factors on the occurrence of such instability events are recorded. From the investigation a stability index was developed from geological data collected from boreholes on site. A hazard map was developed, using the index, to indicate areas in the roof where failures and cavities were most likely to occur. Although some correlations were found between the index and geological factors, the results were not entirely satisfactory as some important factors had not been included in the prediction model which is still being improved
