Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis in the Era of Antifibrotic Therapy: Searching for New Opportunities Grounded in Evidence
Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a progressive and fatal lung disease that up to now has been associated with a poor prognosis. However, the results of the INPULSIS and ASCEND trials and the approval of nintedanib and pirfenidone have marked the beginning of a new era for IPF patients. Questions remain, however. Should these drugs be used earlier? What effect will they have on more severe disease? Will their effects last beyond the trial period? This manuscript is the outcome of a multidisciplinary meeting between pulmonology, radiology, and pathology clinicians on the use of antifibrotic agents in IPF. In our opinion, the existing data show that pirfenidone and nintedanib slow functional decline in early stages of disease. These drugs also appear to result in therapeutic benefits when administered to patients with advanced disease at diagnosis and maintain effective over time. The data also suggest that continuing antifibrotic therapy after disease progression may confer benefits, but more evidence is needed. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial for reducing functional decline, slowing disease progression, and improving quality of life.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Seismic vulnerability assessment and characterisation of the buildings on Faial Island, Azores
The earthquake of the 9th of July 1998 that hit in the central group of the Azores
archipelago greatly affected the islands of Faial, Pico and São Jorge, reaching a magnitude of
Mw 6.2 with the epicentre located about 15km northeast of the Faial Island. This earthquake
allowed the collection of an unprecedented quantity of data concerning the characterisation
of the building stock and the damage suffered by construction. This is the main purpose
of this research, consisting essentially of three main aspects: (i) A detailed characterisation
of the building stock, assigning a five category classification, from old traditional rubble
stone masonry to reinforced concrete moment framed buildings; (ii) A detailed damage
grade classification based on the different damage mechanisms observed; and, (iii) A seismic
vulnerability assessment of the building stock. The results of the vulnerability assessment
together with the building stock database and damage classification were integrated into a
GIS tool, allowing the spatial visualation of damage scenarios, which is potentially useful
for the planning of emergency response strategies and retrofitting priorities to mitigate and
manage seismic risk
Geopantanal 2012
Improved syntheses of aromatase inhibitors and neuroactive steroids efficient oxidations and reductions at key positions for bioactivity
An Henbest reduction, followed by the preparation of a silyl enol ether and oxidation in situ with m-CPBA has led to the neurosteroids 3[alpha]-hydroxy- and 3[alpha],21-dihydroxy-5[alpha]-pregnanolones. Using testosterone as starting material, a new short synthesis of an aromatase inhibitor, 4-OHA, has been achieved through hydroboration/oxidation followed by a Swern type oxidation and epimerization. Another aromatase inhibitor, androst-4-ene-3,6-17-trione, has been efficiently prepared using PCC on montmorillonite K10, under ultrasonic irradiation.http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/B6THR-3WC46V7-8/1/5f915790e78df65f4c988ab78bf4f17
Synergism in the antibacterial action of ternary mixtures involving silver nanoparticles, chitosan and antibiotics
The investigations of the antibacterial actions, observed in ternary associations involving silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), chitosan and the antibiotics azithromycin (AZ), levofloxacin (LE) or tetracycline (TE), against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacterial strains, were performed by in vitro antimicrobial susceptibility testing and checkerboard assays. The pH impact in the culture medium was carefully discarded, but preserving the best conditions for solubilizing chitosan. The synergistic antibacterial effects were observed in the most combinations of AgNPs, chitosan and antibiotic, leading to a reduction from 37 to 97% in the minimum inhibitory concentration of the drugs. The mechanisms for the enhanced antimicrobial effects were proposed based on the investigations of the adsorptions of the drugs on the silver surfaces through surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy.
Vacuum solutions of the gravitational field equations in the brane world model
We consider some classes of solutions of the static, spherically symmetric
gravitational field equations in the vacuum in the brane world scenario, in
which our Universe is a three-brane embedded in a higher dimensional
space-time. The vacuum field equations on the brane are reduced to a system of
two ordinary differential equations, which describe all the geometric
properties of the vacuum as functions of the dark pressure and dark radiation
terms (the projections of the Weyl curvature of the bulk, generating non-local
brane stresses). Several classes of exact solutions of the vacuum gravitational
field equations on the brane are derived. In the particular case of a vanishing
dark pressure the integration of the field equations can be reduced to the
integration of an Abel type equation. A perturbative procedure, based on the
iterative solution of an integral equation, is also developed for this case.
Brane vacuums with particular symmetries are investigated by using Lie group
techniques. In the case of a static vacuum brane admitting a one-parameter
group of conformal motions the exact solution of the field equations can be
found, with the functional form of the dark radiation and pressure terms
uniquely fixed by the symmetry. The requirement of the invariance of the field
equations with respect to the quasi-homologous group of transformations also
imposes a unique, linear proportionality relation between the dark energy and
dark pressure. A homology theorem for the static, spherically symmetric
gravitational field equations in the vacuum on the brane is also proven.Comment: 13 pages, no figures, to appear in PR
