Upper tropospheric ozone production from lightning NOx-impacted convection: Smoke ingestion case study from the DC3 campaign

As part of the Deep Convective Cloud and Chemistry (DC3) experiment, the National Science Foundation/National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) Gulfstream-V (GV) and NASA DC-8 research aircraft probed the chemical composition of the inflow and outflow of two convective storms (north storm, NS, south storm, SS) originating in the Colorado region on 22 June 2012, a time when the High Park wildfire was active in the area. A wide range of trace species were measured on board both aircraft including biomass burning (BB) tracers hydrogen cyanide (HCN) and acetonitrile (ACN). Acrolein, a much shorter lived tracer for BB, was also quantified on the GV. The data demonstrated that the NS had ingested fresh smoke from the High Park fire and as a consequence had a higher VOC OH reactivity than the SS. The SS lofted aged fire tracers along with other boundary layer ozone precursors and was more impacted by lightning NOx (LNOx) than the NS. The NCAR master mechanism box model was initialized with measurements made in the outflow of the two storms. The NS and SS were predicted to produce 11 and 14ppbv of O3, respectively, downwind of the storm over 2days. Sensitivity tests revealed that the ozone production potential of the SS was highly dependent on LNOx. Normalized excess mixing ratios, ΔX/ΔCO, for HCN and ACN were determined in both the fire plume and the storm outflow and found to be 7.0±0.5 and 2.3±0.5pptvppbv-1, respectively, and 1.4±0.3pptvppbv-1 for acrolein in the outflow only
Super-resolving phase measurements with a multi-photon entangled state
Using a linear optical elements and post-selection, we construct an entangled
polarization state of three photons in the same spatial mode. This state is
analogous to a ``photon-number path entangled state'' and can be used for
super-resolving interferometry. Measuring a birefringent phase shift, we
demonstrate two- and three-fold improvements in phase resolution.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Participation, knowledge production, and evaluative research: participation by different actors in a mental health study
This article reflects on the interrelations between participation, knowledge production, and public policy evaluation in light of issues from our own experience with evaluative research on a municipal network of Psychosocial Care Centers (CAPS) in Brazil. The article discusses the coordination of the complex process and the potentials and limits of partnerships for conducting qualitative evaluative studies in mental health with participation by different social actors. The authors conclude that qualitative evaluative research aligned with the perspective of including different points of view representing various segments is the best approach for understanding the numerous spin-offs from the implementation of services linked to the Brazilian psychiatric reform movement, given the inherent specificities of the mental health field.No presente texto apresentamos considerações sobre pesquisa avaliativa qualitativa e participativa com base em investigação desta natureza realizada junto a uma rede municipal de Centros de Atenção Psicossocial (CAPS) ligados ao Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS). A coordenação do complexo processo, bem como as potencialidades e limites do estabelecimento de parcerias para a realização de trabalhos de investigação avaliativa qualitativa em saúde mental, com a inclusão de diferentes atores sociais, são aqui discutidas. The Minimal Scale Invariant Extension of the Standard Model
We perform a systematic analysis of an extension of the Standard Model that
includes a complex singlet scalar field and is scale invariant at the tree
level. We call such a model the Minimal Scale Invariant extension of the
Standard Model (MSISM). The tree-level scale invariance of the model is
explicitly broken by quantum corrections, which can trigger electroweak
symmetry breaking and potentially provide a mechanism for solving the gauge
hierarchy problem. Even though the scale invariant Standard Model is not a
realistic scenario, the addition of a complex singlet scalar field may result
in a perturbative and phenomenologically viable theory. We present a complete
classification of the flat directions which may occur in the classical scalar
potential of the MSISM. After calculating the one-loop effective potential of
the MSISM, we investigate a number of representative scenarios and determine
their scalar boson mass spectra, as well as their perturbatively allowed
parameter space compatible with electroweak precision data. We discuss the
phenomenological implications of these scenarios, in particular, whether they
realize explicit or spontaneous CP violation, neutrino masses or provide dark
matter candidates. In particular, we find a new minimal scale-invariant model
of maximal spontaneous CP violation which can stay perturbative up to
Planck-mass energy scales, without introducing an unnaturally large hierarchy
