Exploring an extended role for pharmacy assistants on inpatient wards in UK hospitals: using mixed methods to develop the role of medicines assistants
Objectives: This project explored the deployment of pharmacy assistants to inpatient wards in a new role as ‘medicines assistants’ (MA). Methods: Ward-based MAs were introduced to six wards across two UK hospitals to support medicines administration. Each 30-bed ward delivered acute inpatient services with MAs supporting typical nursing medication administration rounds to 15 patients. Data were collected using activity diaries, observations, clinical audit and semistructured interviews with pharmacy assistants, pharmacy technicians, clinical pharmacists, nurses, ward managers and pharmacy managers. Thematic analysis, descriptive statistics and the Mann-Whitney U test were used to analyse qualitative and quantitative data, respectively. Results: MAs were able to act as a point of contact between the ward and the pharmacy department and were perceived to save nursing time. A statistically significant reduction in the length of time to complete morning medication administration to 15 patients was observed (mean 74.5 vs 60.8 min per round, p<0.05). On average, 17.4 hours of medicines-related activity per ward per week was carried out by MAs rather than by nursing staff. Participants identified broader training and clarity was needed in relation to the accountability and governance of patient-facing roles. Conclusion: Pharmacy assistants deployed as MAs can contribute to saving nursing time and bridge the gap between nursing and pharmacy professionals
Elevated frequency of abnormalities in barn swallows from Chernobyl
Ever since the Chernobyl accident in 1986, that contaminated vast areas in surrounding countries with radiation, abnormalities and birth defects have been reported in human populations. Recently, several studies suggested that the elevated frequency of such abnormalities can be attributed to poverty and stress in affected human populations. Here, we present long-term results for a free-living population of barn swallows, Hirundo rustica, demonstrating the presence of 11 morphological abnormalities in populations around Chernobyl, but much less frequently in an uncontaminated Ukrainian control population and three more distant control populations. The presence of these abnormalities in barn swallows is associated with reduced viability. These findings demonstrate a link between morphological abnormalities and radiation in an animal population that cannot be attributed to poverty and stress. The most parsimonious hypothesis for abnormalities in animal and human populations alike is that the effects are caused by the same underlying cause, viz. radiation derived from the Chernobyl accident
Associated Production of a Z Boson and a Single Heavy-Quark Jet
The leading-order process for the production of a Z boson and a heavy-quark
jet at hadron colliders is gQ -> ZQ (Q=c,b). We calculate this cross section at
next-to-leading order at the Tevatron and the LHC, and compare it with other
sources of ZQ events. This process is a background to new physics, and can be

Fertilizer application and deep leaching of nitrate under long term crop rotation
Non-Peer ReviewedIt is commonly believed that the use of nitrogen fertilizers in agriculture will lead eventually to the loss of nitrate via leaching. The nitrate leached below the root zone has the potential to contaminate
underground water. The results obtained from various long term crop rotation studies in Saskatchewan suggest that this common belief may not hold in general. This is especially true where nitrogen fertilizers were applied based on soil test recommendation and the land was continuously cropped. Under long term crop rotation studies in the Black Soil Zone at Melfort, the application of nitrogen fertilizer in recent years were based on the general recommendation for wheat. The deep core sample revealed that more nitrate was present in the soil profile under fertilized continuous wheat compared to the unfertilized plots. However, in the Black Soil at Indian Head, where fertilizer application was based on soil test values, similar amounts of nitrate were found below the root zone of fertilized and unfertilized plots after 34 years of continuous wheat. This was in spite of applying 1584 kg of N ha-1 to the fertilized plot over 34 years. A result similar to that at Indian Head was obtained from the crop rotation experiment in the Brown Soil Zone at Swift Current. In the Brown Soil Zone, the inclusion of a fallow phase in the rotation, increased the amount of nitrate found below the root zone although this system had received less fertilizer over the years than the continuously cropped plots. The fallow phase appeared to provide a window for the
leakage of nitrate accumulated within the root zone. This was attributed to a better moisture (antecedent moisture) regime and higher amount of mineralized nitrate during the fallow phase. On the other hand, frequent summerfallow can deplete the soil of its N supplying power and this may eventually result in less nitrate leached as was found for the 2-yr rotation at Indian Head after 34 yr
The detection of single electrons by means of a Micromegas-covered MediPix2 pixel CMOS readout circuit
A small drift chamber was read out by means of a MediPix2 readout chip as
direct anode. A Micromegas foil was placed 50 m above the chip, and
electron multiplication occurred in the gap. With a He/Isobutane 80/20 mixture,
gas multiplication factors up to tens of thousands were achieved, resulting in
an efficiency for detecting single electrons of better than 90% . We recorded
many frames containing 2D images with tracks from cosmic muons. Along these
tracks, electron clusters were observed, as well as delta-rays.Comment: 15 pages, 9 included postscript figures, 5 separate jpeg figures,

Magnetic fluctuations in frustrated Laves hydrides R(Mn_{1-x}Al_{x})_{2}H_{y}
By neutron scattering, we have studied the spin correlations and spin
fluctuations in frustrated Laves hydrides, where magnetic disorder sets in the
topologically frustrated Mn lattice. Below the transition towards short range
magnetic order, static spin clusters coexist with fluctuating and alsmost
uncorrelated spins. The magnetic response shows a complexe lineshape, connected
with the presence of the magnetic inhomogeneities. Its analysis shows the
existence of two different processes, relaxation and local excitations, for the
spin fluctuations below the transition. The paramagnetic fluctuations are
discussed in comparison with classical spin glasses, cluster glasses, and non
Fermi liquid itinerant magnets
Fluctuations and Instabilities of Ferromagnetic Domain Wall pairs in an External Magnetic Field
Soliton excitations and their stability in anisotropic quasi-1D ferromagnets
are analyzed analytically. In the presence of an external magnetic field, the
lowest lying topological excitations are shown to be either soliton-soliton or
soliton-antisoliton pairs. In ferromagnetic samples of macro- or mesoscopic
size, these configurations correspond to twisted or untwisted pairs of Bloch
walls. It is shown that the fluctuations around these configurations are
governed by the same set of operators. The soliton-antisoliton pair has exactly
one unstable mode and thus represents a critical nucleus for thermally
activated magnetization reversal in effectively one-dimensional systems. The
soliton-soliton pair is stable for small external fields but becomes unstable
for large magnetic fields. From the detailed expression of this instability
threshold and an analysis of nonlocal demagnetizing effects it is shown that
the relative chirality of domain walls can be detected experimentally in thin
ferromagnetic films. The static properties of the present model are equivalent
to those of a nonlinear sigma-model with anisotropies. In the limit of large
