On the Chandra X-ray Sources in the Galactic Center
Recent deep Chandra surveys of the Galactic center region have revealed the
existence of a faint, hard X-ray source population. While the nature of this
population is unknown, it is likely that several types of stellar objects
contribute. For sources involving binary systems, accreting white dwarfs and
accreting neutron stars with main sequence companions have been proposed. Among
the accreting neutron star systems, previous studies have focused on stellar
wind-fed sources. In this paper, we point out that binary systems in which mass
transfer occurs via Roche lobe overflow (RLOF) can also contribute to this
X-ray source population.
A binary population synthesis study of the Galactic center region has been
carried out, and it is found that evolutionary channels for neutron star
formation involving the accretion induced collapse of a massive ONeMg white
dwarf, in addition to the core collapse of massive stars, can contribute to
this population. The RLOF systems would appear as transients with quiescent
luminosities, above 2 keV, in the range from 10^31-10^32 ergs/s. The results
reveal that RLOF systems primarily contribute to the faint X-ray source
population in the Muno et al. (2003) survey and wind-fed systems can contribute
to the less sensitive Wang et al. (2002) survey. However, our results suggest
that accreting neutron star systems are not likely to be the major contributor

Double solid twistor spaces: the case of arbitrary signature
In a recent paper (math.DG/0701278) we constructed a series of new Moishezon
twistor spaces which is a kind of variant of the famous LeBrun twistor spaces.
In this paper we explicitly give projective models of another series of
Moishezon twistor spaces on nCP^2 for arbitrary n>2, which can be regarded as a
generalization of the twistor spaces of a 'double solid type' on 3CP^2 studied
by Kreussler, Kurke, Poon and the author. Similarly to the twistor spaces of
'double solid type' on 3CP^2, projective models of present twistor spaces have
a natural structure of double covering of a CP^2-bundle over CP^1. We
explicitly give a defining polynomial of the branch divisor of the double
covering whose restriction to fibers are degree four. If n>3 these are new
twistor spaces, to the best of the author's knowledge. We also compute the
dimension of the moduli space of these twistor spaces. Differently from
math.DG/0701278, the present investigation is based on analysis of

Science with the EXTraS Project: Exploring the X-ray Transient and variable Sky
The EXTraS project (Exploring the X-ray Transient and variable Sky) will
characterise the temporal behaviour of the largest ever sample of objects in
the soft X-ray range (0.1-12 keV) with a complex, systematic and consistent
analysis of all data collected by the European Photon Imaging Camera (EPIC)
instrument onboard the ESA XMM-Newton X-ray observatory since its launch. We
will search for, and characterize variability (both periodic and aperiodic) in
hundreds of thousands of sources spanning more than nine orders of magnitude in
time scale and six orders of magnitude in flux. We will also search for fast
transients, missed by standard image analysis. Our analysis will be completed
by multiwavelength characterization of new discoveries and phenomenological
classification of variable sources. All results and products will be made
available to the community in a public archive, serving as a reference for a

XTE J1946+274 = GRO J1944+26: An Enigmatic Be/X-ray Binary
XTE J1946+274 = GRO J1944+26 is a 15.8 s Be/X-ray pulsar discovered
simultaneously in 1998 September with the Burst and Transient Source Experiment
(BATSE) on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (CGRO) and the All-Sky Monitor
(ASM) on the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). Here we present new results
from BATSE and {\em RXTE} including a pulse timing analysis, spectral analysis,
and evidence for an accretion disk. Our pulse timing analysis yielded an
orbital period of 169.2 days, a moderate eccentricity of 0.33, and implied a
mass function of 9.7 M_sun. We observed evidence for an accretion disk, a
correlation between measured spin-up rate and flux, which was fitted to obtain
a distance estimate of 9.5 +/- 2.9 kpc. XTE J1946+274 remained active from 1998
September - 2001 July, undergoing 13 outbursts that were not locked in orbital
phase. Comparing RXTE PCA observations from the initial bright outburst in 1998
and the last pair of outbursts in 2001, we found energy and intensity dependent
pulse profile variations in both outbursts and hardening spectra with
increasing intensity during the fainter 2001 outbursts. In 2001 July, optical
Halpha observations indicate a density perturbation appeared in the Be disk as
the X-ray outbursts ceased. We propose that the equatorial plane of the Be star
is inclined with respect to the orbital plane in this system and that this

Search for low instability strip variables in the young open cluster NGC 2516
In this paper we revise and complete the photometric survey of the
instability strip of the southern open cluster NGC 2516 published by Antonello
and Mantegazza (1986). No variable stars with amplitudes larger than
were found. However by means of an accurate analysis based on a new statistical
method two groups of small amplitude variables have been disentangled: one with
periods (probably Scuti stars) and one with periods
. The position in the HR diagram and the apparent time-scale may
suggest that the stars of the second group belong to a recently discovered new
class of variables, named Dor variables. They certainly deserve
further study. We also present a comparison between the results of the
photometric survey and the available pointed ROSAT observations of this

Cohomological characterizations of projective spaces and hyperquadrics
We confirm Beauville's conjecture that claims that if the p-th exterior power
of the tangent bundle of a smooth projective variety contains the p-th power of
an ample line bundle, then the variety is either the projective space or the

Discovery of the accretion-powered millisecond pulsar SWIFT J1756.9-2508 with a low-mass companion
We report on the discovery by the Swift Gamma-Ray Burst Explorer of the
eighth known transient accretion-powered millisecond pulsar, SWIFT
J1756.9-2508, as part of routine observations with the Swift Burst Alert
Telescope hard X-ray transient monitor. The pulsar was subsequently observed by
both the X-Ray Telescope on Swift and the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer
Proportional Counter Array. It has a spin frequency of 182 Hz (5.5 ms) and an
orbital period of 54.7 minutes. The minimum companion mass is between 0.0067
and 0.0086 solar masses, depending on the mass of the neutron star, and the
upper limit on the mass is 0.030 solar masses (95% confidence level). Such a
low mass is inconsistent with brown dwarf models, and comparison with white
dwarf models suggests that the companion is a He-dominated donor whose thermal
cooling has been at least modestly slowed by irradiation from the accretion
flux. No X-ray bursts, dips, eclipses or quasi-periodic oscillations were
detected. The current outburst lasted approximately 13 days and no earlier

Simulating the WFXT sky
We investigate the scientific impact of the Wide Field X-ray Telescope
mission. We present simulated images and spectra of X-ray sources as observed
from the three surveys planned for the nominal 5-year WFXT lifetime. The goal
of these simulations is to provide WFXT images of the extragalactic sky in
different energy bands based on accurate description of AGN populations, normal
and star forming galaxies, groups and clusters of galaxies. The images are
realized using a detailed PSF model, instrumental and physical
backgrounds/foregrounds, accurate model of the effective area and the related
vignetting effect. Thanks to this comprehensive modelization of the WFXT
properties, the simulated images can be used to evaluate the flux limits for
detection of point and extended sources, the effect of source confusion at very
faint fluxes, and in general the efficiency of detection algorithms. We also
simulate the spectra of the detected sources, in order to address specific
science topics which are unique to WFXT. Among them, we focus on the
characterization of the Intra Cluster Medium (ICM) of high-z clusters, and in
particular on the measurement of the redshift from the ICM spectrum in order to
build a cosmological sample of galaxy clusters. The end-to-end simulation
procedure presented here, is a valuable tool in optimizing the mission design.
Therefore, these simulations can be used to reliably characterize the WFXT
discovery space and to verify the connection between mission requirements and
scientific goals. Thanks to this effort, we can conclude on firm basis that an
X-ray mission optimized for surveys like WFXT is necessary to bring X-ray
astronomy at the level of the optical, IR, submm and radio wavebands as
