Robust schedules for tardiness optimization in job shop with interval uncertainty
This paper addresses a variant of the job shop scheduling problem with total tardiness minimization where task durations and due dates are uncertain. This uncertainty is modelled with intervals. Different ranking methods for intervals are considered and embedded into a genetic algorithm. A new robustness measure is proposed to compare the different ranking methods and assess their capacity to predict ‘expected delays’ of jobs. Experimental results show that dealing with uncertainty during the optimization process yields more robust solutions. A sensitivity analysis also shows that the robustness of the solutions given by the solving method increases when the uncertainty grows. This research has been supported by the Spanish Government under research grants PID2019-106263RB-I00 and TIN2017-87600-P
Fast elitist ABC for makespan optimisation in interval JSP
This paper addresses a variant of the Job Shop Scheduling Problem with makespan minimisation where uncertainty in task durations is taken into account and modelled with intervals. A novel Artificial Bee Colony algorithm is proposed where the classical layout is simplified, increasing the algorithm's speed and reducing the number of parameters to set up. We also take into account the fundamental principles of exploration around a local solution and attraction to a global solution to improve diversity in the hive. The increase on speed and diversity allows to include a Local Search phase to better exploit promising areas of the search space. A parametric analysis is conducted and the contribution of the new strategies is analysed. The results of the new approach are competitive with those obtained with previous methods in the literature, but taking less runtime. The addition of Local Search improves the results even further, outperforming the best-known ones from the literature. An additional sensitivity study is conducted to assess the advantages of considering uncertainty and how increasing it affects the solution's robustness. This research has been supported by the Spanish Government under research grant PID2019-106263RB-I00 and by the Asturian Government under research grant Severo Ochoa
Agent-based Adaptive Selection and Interaction to Z39.50 Servers
Digital libraries and OPACs are offering an enormous
collection of information resources which can be accessed
through Internet by quite different users thanks to the existence
of standard protocols for information retrieval such
as Z39.50. However, some users may find difficult to get
the items they are looking for in such a huge bulk of heterogeneous
resources since they have to know where and
how they have to search for. Thus, one of the main reasons
for the disregard of the Z39.50 service has traditionally
been the absence of appropriate interfaces and the cost
of making alternative searches. WAY-Z39.50 tries to help
spreading the use of these servers by providing easy web
access to them, as well as, by facilitating the access to multiple
servers at once. The prototype described implements
the WAY general model based on an agent-based architecture
that provides adaptive searching in different servers
through an adaptive interfac

An effective virus-based gene silencing method for functional genomics studies in common bean
BACKGROUND: Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is a crop of economic and nutritious importance in many parts of the world. The lack of genomic resources have impeded the advancement of common bean genomics and thereby crop improvement. Although concerted efforts from the "Phaseomics" consortium have resulted in the development of several genomic resources, functional studies have continued to lag due to the recalcitrance of this crop for genetic transformation. RESULTS: Here we describe the use of a bean pod mottle virus (BPMV)-based vector for silencing of endogenous genes in common bean as well as for protein expression. This BPMV-based vector was originally developed for use in soybean. It has been successfully employed for both protein expression and gene silencing in this species. We tested this vector for applications in common bean by targeting common bean genes encoding nodulin 22 and stearoyl-acyl carrier protein desaturase for silencing. Our results indicate that the BPMV vector can indeed be employed for reverse genetics studies of diverse biological processes in common bean. We also used the BPMV-based vector for expressing the green fluorescent protein (GFP) in common bean and demonstrate stable GFP expression in all common bean tissues where BPMV was detected. CONCLUSIONS: The availability of this vector is an important advance for the common bean research community not only because it provides a rapid means for functional studies in common bean, but also because it does so without generating genetically modified plants. Here we describe the detailed methodology and provide essential guidelines for the use of this vector for both gene silencing and protein expression in common bean. The entire VIGS procedure can be completed in 4-5 weeks
Fuzzy adaptation for information acces to digital libraries
P. 287-297Different models have been proposed to build systems that adapt to the
user reducing the complexity in the information browsing process, saving user
time and offering personalised interfaces. The work described in this paper,
named Way-Z39.50, is an example of adaptive system specially built for accessing digital libraries. A fuzzy decision mechanism is used to implement the
adaptation of both the user interface and the information searching process.
This paper describes how this system has been designed and implemented,
focusing on its fuzzy-based components. Finally, it also briefly discusses the
advantages of using fuzzy logic to implement adaptability of the user interface
and the searching processS

Assessment by self-organizing maps of element release from sediments in contact with acidified seawater in laboratory leaching test conditions
Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is gaining interest as a significant global option to reduce emissions of CO2. CCS development requires an assessment of the potential risks associated with CO2 leakages from storage sites. Laboratory leaching tests have proved to be a useful tool to study the potential mobilization of metals from contaminated sediment in a decreased-pH environment that mimics such a leakage event. This work employs a self-organizing map (SOM) tool to interpret and analyze the release of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn from equilibrium, column, and pH-dependent leaching tests. In these tests, acidified seawater is used for simulating different CO2 leakage scenarios. Classification was carried out detailing the mobilization of contaminants for environments of varying pH, liquid-to-solid ratio, and type of contact of the laboratory leaching tests. Component planes in the SOMs allow visualization of the results and the determination of the worst case of element release. The pH-dependent leaching test with initial addition of either base or acid was found to mobilize the highest concentrations of metals. This work was supported by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness under Project CTM 2011-28437-C02-01, ERDF included.
