    A Rapidly Incremented Tethered-Swimming Maximal Protocol for Cardiorespiratory Assessment of Swimmers

    Incremental exercise testing is the standard means of assessing cardiorespiratory capacity of endurance athletes. While the maximal rate of oxygen consumption is typically used as the criterion measurement in this regard, two metabolic breakpoints that reflect changes in the dynamics of lactate production/consumption as the work rate is increased are perhaps more relevant for endurance athletes from a functional standpoint. Exercise economy, which represents the rate of oxygen consumption relative to performance of submaximal work, is also an important parameter to measure for endurance-athlete assessment. Ramp incremental tests comprising a gradual but rapid increase in work rate until the limit of exercise tolerance is reached are useful for determining these parameters. This type of test is typically performed on a cycle ergometer or treadmill because there is a need for precision with respect to work-rate incrementation. However, athletes should be tested while performing the mode of exercise required for their sport. Consequently, swimmers are typically assessed during free-swimming incremental tests where such precision is difficult to achieve. We have recently suggested that stationary swimming against a load that is progressively increased (incremental tethered swimming) can serve as a "swim ergometer" by allowing sufficient precision to accommodate a gradual but rapid loading pattern that reveals the aforementioned metabolic breakpoints and exercise economy. However, the degree to which the peak rate of oxygen consumption achieved during such a protocol approximates the maximal rate that is measured during free swimming remains to be determined. In the present article, we explain how this rapidly incremented tethered-swimming protocol can be employed to assess the cardiorespiratory capacity of a swimmer.     METHYLPHENIDATE: PROCONVULSANT EFFECT AND ACTION ON ACETYL CHOLINESTERASE ACTIVITY IN YOUNG AND ADULT MICE

    Objective: Methylphenidate (MPH) is a derivative of piperidine, structurally related to amphetamine. It is the most widely psychostimulant used in Brazil for treating attention deficit disorder and hyperactivity. This drug was investigated in an epilepsy model induced by pilocarpine and on acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity in young and adult mice. Methods: The control group was treated with saline. The treated groups received MPH (2.5, 5, 10 or 20 mg/kg) in single dose, followed by pilocarpine (400mg/Kg). The groups were observed for1h after treatment. Results: MPH, in all doses, was efficacious in decreasing both the latency to first seizures and the survival percentage in young and adult animals. Determination of AChE activity in the hippocampus and striatum of young and adult animals, after pilocarpine-induced status epilepticus, demonstrated that pretreatment with MPH reduced AChE activity only in the striatum. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that MPH has proconvulsant action and cholinergic neurotransmission system can play a role in this effect

    Towards a Homomorphic Machine Learning Big Data Pipeline for the Financial Services Sector

    Machinelearning(ML)istodaycommonlyemployedintheFinancialServicesSector(FSS) to create various models to predict a variety of conditions ranging from financial transactions fraud to outcomes of investments and also targeted marketing campaigns. The common ML technique used for the modeling is supervised learning using regression algorithms and usually involves large amounts of data that needs to be shared and prepared before the actual learning phase. Compliance with privacy laws and confidentiality regulations requires that most, if not all, of the data must be kept in a secure environment, usually in-house, and not outsourced to cloud or multi-tenant shared environments. This paper presents the results of a research collaboration between IBM Research and Banco Bradesco SA to investigate approaches to homomorphically secure a typical ML pipeline commonly employed in the FSS industry. We investigated and de-constructed a typical ML pipeline used by Banco Bradesco and applied Homo- morphic Encryption (HE) to two of the important ML tasks, namely the variable selection phase of the model generation task and the prediction task. Variable selection, which usually precedes the training phase, is very important when working with data sets for which no prior knowledge of the covariate set exists. Our work provides a way to define an initial covariate set for the training phase while preserving the privacy and confidentiality of the input data sets. Quality metrics, using real financial data, comprising quantitative, qualitative and categorical features, demonstrated that our HE based pipeline can yield results comparable to state of the art variable selection techniques and the performance results demonstrated that HE technology has reached the inflection point where it can be useful in batch processing in a financial business setting

    Genomics and epidemiology for gastric adenocarcinomas (GE4GAC): a Brazilian initiative to study gastric cancer

    Abstract Gastric cancer (GC) is the fifth most common type of cancer worldwide with high incidences in Asia, Central, and South American countries. This patchy distribution means that GC studies are neglected by large research centers from developed countries. The need for further understanding of this complex disease, including the local importance of epidemiological factors and the rich ancestral admixture found in Brazil, stimulated the implementation of the GE4GAC project. GE4GAC aims to embrace epidemiological, clinical, molecular and microbiological data from Brazilian controls and patients with malignant and pre-malignant gastric disease. In this letter, we summarize the main goals of the project, including subject and sample accrual and current findings

    Violent masculinities: Gendered dynamics of policing in Rio de Janeiro

    Historically, policing in Rio de Janeiro has been shaped by the equation of racialized violence and masculinity. Attempts to reform the police have paradoxically drawn on forms of male violence that are centered on the rational and professional use of force and on “softer” practices, such as dialogue and collaboration, symbolically coded as feminine. The failure of police reform reflects the cultural salience of understandings of masculinity centered around violence within the police, historical patterns of policing in Rio, and political actors’ strategic cultivation of male violence. Through Rio de Janeiro's failed attempt at police reform, we theorize the relation between racialized state violence, authoritarian political projects, and transgressive forms of male violence, arguing that an important appeal of authoritarianism lies in its promise to carve out a space for performing what we call wild masculinity.
