    Strategies for the adoption of hydrogen-based energy storage systems : an exploratory study in Australia

    A significant contribution to the reduction of carbon emissions will be enabled through the transition from a centralised fossil fuel system to a decentralised, renewable electricity system. However, due to the intermittent nature of renewable energy, storage is required to provide a suitable response to dynamic loads and manage the excess generated electricity with utilisation during periods of low generation. This paper investigates the use of stationary hydrogen-based energy storage systems for microgrids and distributed energy resource systems. An exploratory study was conducted in Australia based on a mixed methodology. Ten Australian industry experts were interviewed to determine use cases for hydrogen-based energy storage systems’ requirements, barriers, methods, and recommendations. This study suggests that the current cost of the electrolyser, fuel cell, and storage medium, and the current low round-trip efficiency, are the main elements inhibiting hydrogen-based energy storage systems. Limited industry and practical experience are barriers to the implementation of hydrogen storage systems. Government support could help scale hydrogen-based energy storage systems among early adopters and enablers. Furthermore, collaboration and knowledge sharing could reduce risks, allowing the involvement of more stakeholders. Competition and innovation could ultimately reduce the costs, increasing the uptake of hydrogen storage systems

    Toward understanding the structure of Amot’s ACCH Domain

    poster abstractAmots are a family of adaptor proteins widely involved in cell signaling and lipid binding. Amot80 has been linked to cellular proliferation in breast cancer via the VEGF and MAPK signaling pathways, while Amot130 and AmotL1 have been linked to cellular inhibition via the HIPPO signaling pathway. Amot family members also have a characteristic lipid-binding domain – named the ACCH Domain for its predicted coil-coil structure – that has the ability to selectively target phosphoinositols followed by deformation of the membrane. Understanding the structure-function relationship of this domain may provide options to modulate these signaling pathways, directly affecting cellular differentiation, proliferation, and migration. Extensive crystallization attempts for this domain have failed, leading to a bioinformatics and biophysics-combined approach. Using SAXS, data for the globular structure of Amot80 has been generated and analyzed. Additionally, the threading programs ITASSER and LOMETS were used to develop 20 computational theoretical models. By fitting the computational models to the SAXS data, potential ACCH domain models were generated, and then scored based on accuracy of fit via C-score, TMScore, and RMSD values. This 3D model can then be used to discover how Amot interacts with lipids and further the understanding of Amot’s role in the cancer-signaling cascade

    Canine behavioral problems and their effect on relinquishment of the Jindo dog

    The purpose of this study was to evaluate behavior problems of the Jindo dog, the native dog of Korea, based on an owner's survey and their effect on pet relinquishment. To live a better life with their own pet and prevent relinquishment, it is important to understand the innate behavior characteristics of dog breed and the potential causes of relinquishment. Information concerning various factors and demonstration of the five most common behavior problems was collected via 189 completed questionnaires. No factors significantly affected the demonstration of behavior problem. A total 151 of 189 dogs had behavior problems (79.9%) and 38 dogs did not have behavior problems (20.1%). Among 151 dogs, 139 dogs showed single behavior problem (92.1%). They were 'excessive excitability' (46.8%), 'excessive vocalization' (30.2%), 'inappropriate elimination' (17.3%), 'destructive behavior' (4.3%), and 'aggressive behavior' (1.4%), respectively. In addition, 12 dogs showed two concurrent behavior problems (7.9%) According to the results, the relinquishment of Jindo dogs was not significantly associated with canine behavior problems, which is the single greatest risk factor of relinquishment in general. The possible reasons for potential behavior problems include improper raising, lack of socialization, and insufficient dog training classes, therefore canine behavior would be improved by owner education

    Determining apparent exhumation from Chalk outcrop samples, Cleveland Basin/East Midlands Shelf.

    Porosity measurements of 22 Upper Cretaceous Chalk samples, and mean Chalk porosities derived from sonic logs in three wells, were used to quantify apparent exhumation (height above maximum burial-depth) in the onshore Cleveland Basin/East Midlands Shelf. Late Cretaceous/Tertiary exhumation of the East Midlands Shelf resulted in the removal of 1.2 km of section near the coast and more than 2 km of section inland, to the west. The southern margin of the Cleveland Basin was exhumed by 2 km, and exhumation increases northwards towards the recognized inversion axis running east–west along the basin’s centre. The northwards increasing exhumation associated with the east–west trending inversion axis of the Cleveland Basin is superimposed upon the regional westward trend of increasing exhumation of eastern England. These two trends control the outcrop distribution of the Upper Cretaceous Chalk in the Cleveland Basin/East Midlands Shelf.Robert J. Menpes and Richard R. Hilli

    The role of metacognition in self-critical rumination: an investigation in individuals presenting with low self-esteem

    Background: No research, to date, has directly investigated the role of metacognition in self-critical rumination and low self-esteem. Aim: To investigate the presence of metacognitive beliefs about self-critical rumination; the goal of self-critical rumination and its stop signal; and the degree of detachment from intrusive self-critical thoughts. Method: Ten individuals reporting both a self-acknowledged tendency to judge themselves critically and having low self-esteem were assessed using metacognitive profiling, a semi-structured interview. Results: All participants endorsed both positive and negative metacognitive beliefs about self-critical rumination. Positive metacognitive beliefs concerned the usefulness of self-critical rumination as a means of improving cognitive performance and enhancing motivation. Negative metacognitive beliefs concerned the uncontrollability of self-critical rumination and its negative impact on mood, motivation and perception of self-worth. The primary goal of engaging in self-critical rumination was to achieve a better or clearer understanding of a given trigger situation or to feel more motivated to resolve it. However, only four participants were able to identify when this goal had been achieved, which was if the trigger situation were not to occur again. Participants unanimously stated that they were either unable to detach from their self-critical thoughts or could do so some of the time with varying degrees of success. More often than not, though, self-critical thoughts were viewed as facts, would rarely be seen as distorted or biased, and could take hours or days to dissipate. Conclusions: These findings provide preliminary evidence that specific facets of metacognition play a role in the escalation and perseveration of self-critical rumination

    The Westray Mine Disaster and its Aftermath: The Politics of Causation

    Causation analysis is densely political in at least three ways. First, because causation is crucial to our system of attributing moral, legal, and political responsibility, causation arguments are advanced for purely instrumental purposes. They do political work. Second, because any particular occurrence is the outcome of an almost infinite number of antecedent events, “but for” causation analysis produces trivial results. A judgment about causal significance is required and will depend, in part, on the goals of the analysis. The choice of goals is political, but unstated goals and hidden assumptions often exclude consideration of some possible causes as significant. Theses politics of causation need to be made explicit. Third, the institutional setting in which official determinations of causation are made influence the outcome. Hence, it is necessary to explore these as well. Each of these three dimensions of the politics of causation is explored through an analysis of the 1992 Westray Mine disaster which killed 29 miners in Nova Scotia, and the official responses to it. It is argued that if the goal is to protect workers and nothing else, the political-economic context that promotes the creation of hazardous conditions must be considered a significant cause of harmful occurrences. It is unlikely, however that any of the official responses to the disaster will take this approach

    Fine Motor Control Underlies the Association Between Response Inhibition and Drawing Skill in Early Development

    Previous research shows that the development of response inhibition and drawing skill are linked. The current research investigated whether this association reflects a more fundamental link between response inhibition and motor control. In Experiment 1, 3- and 4-year-olds (n = 100) were tested on measures of inhibition, fine motor control, and drawing skill. Data revealed an association between inhibition and fine motor control, which was responsible for most of the association observed with drawing skill. Experiment 2 (n = 100) provided evidence that, unlike fine motor control, gross motor control and inhibition were not associated (after controlling for IQ). Alternative explanations for the link between inhibition and fine motor control are outlined, including a consideration of how these cognitive processes may interact during development
