Conceptualizing Rurality in Education Policy: Comparative Evidence from Missouri
For education policies to be implemented most effectively in local contexts, policymakers must consider diverse school and community geographic characteristics. For example, rural geographies often present particularly important dynamics for public schooling, including challenges with school enrollment, school funding, and teacher labor markets. We focus on Missouri, where over two-thirds of its school districts are located in rural areas. Enrollment in these districts varies over 100-fold, yet little research describes the similarities and differences between these districts and how to appropriately distinguish between them to best advise contemporary policymaking. In this study, we analyze data from the American Community Survey, the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), and the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to compare school, financial, teacher, and community characteristics to identify relationships between a districtâs size, location, and community qualities. We focus our analyses on a comparison of NCESâ demarcation of rurality to one we construct based on student enrollment to highlight where conclusions may differ simply based on a lack of common definitional groundings. The findings help to distinguish rural communities and school districts and may prompt future rural education-focused research to appropriately tailor education policies to diverse rural contexts

Donât Worry, Weâll Get There: Developing Robot Personalities to Maintain User Interaction After Robot Error
Human robot interaction (HRI) often considers the human impact of a robot serving to assist a human in achieving their goal or a shared task. There are many circumstances though during HRI in which a robot may make errors that are inconvenient or even detrimental to human partners. Using the ROBOtic GUidance and Interaction DEvelopment (ROBO-GUIDE) model on the Pioneer LX platform as a case study, and insights from social psychology, we examine key factors for a robot that has made such a mistake, ensuring preservation of individualsâ perceived competence of the robot, and individualsâ trust towards the robot. We outline an experimental approach to test these proposals
'Deadman' and 'Passcode' microbial kill switches for bacterial containment
Biocontainment systems that couple environmental sensing with circuit-based control of cell viability could be used to prevent escape of genetically modified microbes into the environment. Here we present two engineered safeguard systems known as the 'Deadman' and 'Passcode' kill switches. The Deadman kill switch uses unbalanced reciprocal transcriptional repression to couple a specific input signal with cell survival. The Passcode kill switch uses a similar two-layered transcription design and incorporates hybrid LacI-GalR family transcription factors to provide diverse and complex environmental inputs to control circuit function. These synthetic gene circuits efficiently kill Escherichia coli and can be readily reprogrammed to change their environmental inputs, regulatory architecture and killing mechanism.United States. Hadron Helicity Violation in Exclusive Processes: Quantitative Calculations in Leading Order QCD
We study a new mechanism for hadronic helicity flip in high energy hard
exclusive reactions. The mechanism proceeds in the limit of perfect chiral
symmetry, namely without any need to flip a quark helicity. The fundamental
feature of the new mechanism is the breaking of rotational symmetry of the hard
collision by a scattering plane in processes involving independent quark
scattering. We show that in the impulse approximation there is no evidence for
of the helicity violating process as the energy or momentum transfer is
increased over the region 1 GeV^2 < Q^2 < 100 GeV^2. In the asymptotic region
Q^2> 1000 GeV^2, a saddle point approximation with doubly logarithmic accuracy
yields suppression by a fraction of power of Q^2. ``Chirally--odd" exclusive
wave functions which carry non--zero orbital angular momentum and yet are

A supersonic crowdion in mica: Ultradiscrete kinks with energy between K recoil and transmission sputtering
In this chapter we analyze in detail the behaviour and properties of the
kinks found in an one dimensional model for the close packed rows of potassium
ions in mica muscovite. The model includes realistic potentials obtained from
the physics of the problem, ion bombardment experiments and molecular dynamics
fitted to experiments. These kinks are supersonic and have an unique velocity
and energy. They are ultradiscrete involving the translation of an interstitial
ion, which is the reason they are called 'crowdions'. Their energy is below the
most probable source of energy, the decay of the K isotope and above the
energy needed to eject an atom from the mineral, a phenomenon that has been

The social triad model: considering the deployer in a novel approach to trust in humanârobot interaction
There is an increasing interest in considering, measuring, and implementing trust in human-robot interaction (HRI). New avenues in this field include identifying social means for robots to influence trust, and identifying social aspects of trust such as a perceptions of robotsâ integrity, sincerity or even benevolence. However, questions remain regarding robotsâ authenticity in obtaining trust through social means and their capacity to increase such experiences through social interaction with users. We propose that the dyadic model of HRI misses a key complexity: a robotâs trustworthiness may be contingent on the userâs relationship with, and opinion of, the individual or organisation deploying the robot (termed here, Deployer). We present a case study in three parts on researching HRI and a LEGOÂź SeriousÂź Play focus group on care robotics to indicate how Usersâ trust towards the Deployer can affect trust towards robots and robotic research. Neural correlates of taste reactivity in autism spectrum disorder.
Selective or \u27picky\u27 eating habits are common among those with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). These behaviors are often related to aberrant sensory experience in individuals with ASD, including heightened reactivity to food taste and texture. However, very little is known about the neural mechanisms that underlie taste reactivity in ASD. In the present study, food-related neural responses were evaluated in 21 young adult and adolescent males diagnosed with ASD without intellectual disability, and 21 typically-developing (TD) controls. Taste reactivity was assessed using the Adolescent/Adult Sensory Profile, a clinical self-report measure. Functional magnetic resonance imaging was used to evaluate hemodynamic responses to sweet (vs. neutral) tastants and food pictures. Subjects also underwent resting-state functional connectivity scans.The ASD and TD individuals did not differ in their hemodynamic response to gustatory stimuli. However, the ASD subjects, but not the controls, exhibited a positive association between self-reported taste reactivity and the response to sweet tastants within the insular cortex and multiple brain regions associated with gustatory perception and reward. There was a strong interaction between diagnostic group and taste reactivity on tastant response in brain regions associated with ASD pathophysiology, including the bilateral anterior superior temporal sulcus (STS). This interaction of diagnosis and taste reactivity was also observed in the resting state functional connectivity between the anterior STS and dorsal mid-insula (i.e., gustatory cortex).These results suggest that self-reported heightened taste reactivity in ASD is associated with heightened brain responses to food-related stimuli and atypical functional connectivity of primary gustatory cortex, which may predispose these individuals to maladaptive and unhealthy patterns of selective eating behavior.

Transgressing the moral economy: Wheelerism and management of the nationalised coal industry in Scotland
This article illuminates the links between managerial style and political economy in post-1945 Britain, and explores the origins of the 1984â1985 miners' strike, by examining in longer historical context the abrasive attitudes and policies of Albert Wheeler, Scottish Area Director of the National Coal Board (NCB). Wheeler built on an earlier emphasis on production and economic criteria, and his micro-management reflected pre-existing centralising tendencies in the industries. But he was innovative in one crucial aspect, transgressing the moral economy of the Scottish coalfield, which emphasised the value of economic security and changes by joint industrial agreement
