Exploring the experiences of resilience in Muslim Afghan Refugee children

    Get PDF
The aim of this study was to explore the experiences of Muslim Afghan refugee children living in Canada. War has an impact on a child\u27s life, including education and protection by the family and community. The actual course of events of war can never be told completely due to the occurrence of simultaneous adversities. Hermeneutic photography was used to understand the experiences of Afghan children. Data were collected through photo conversations. Building and sustaining resilience was a theme that emerged from the data analysis. The findings of the study provide a useful guide for education, practice, and policy development to benefit Afghan refugee children and their families to overcome adversities in a new country

Air Hunger: The Sublime In Nursing Practice

    Get PDF
In sublime moments in practice we may be brought close, incredibly close, to what normally remains at a distance. Or we may momentarily discern what has always been before us and so close to us that it has never before been truly noticed. Two different nursing situations show how meaningful, yet ineffable the sublime in practice can be when it is evoked and how difficult it is to articulate aesthetic dimensions of nursing practices without covering them over with theory and theoretical knowledge. We consider the experience of taken for granted breathing when suddenly severe breathlessness appears. What is it to be present to those in extremis, to be close to the inside workings of human bodies? Using Jean-Luc Nancy’s (1993) understanding of the sublime, we consider how the experience of a patient’s breath can be existentially revelatory of nursing practice

Enculturation and alcohol use problems among Aboriginal university students

    Get PDF
Objective: To examine associations between Aboriginal enculturation, Canadian acculturation, and alcohol problems among Aboriginal university students living in an urban area in Canada. Methods: Data for this mixed methods study were collected through in-person surveys with a convenience sample of Aboriginal university students (n = 60) in 2008/2009. Results: Students evidenced high levels of Aboriginal enculturation and Canadian acculturation. Aboriginal enculturation was significantly associated with reduced alcohol problems for Aboriginal university students. There was no association between Canadian acculturation and alcohol problems. Qualitative findings suggest Aboriginal cultural practices helped students cope with problems in their daily lives and provided them with both personal and social rewards. Conclusions: This study found Aboriginal enculturation was significantly associated with reduced alcohol problems among Aboriginal university students. Results support the growth of programs and services that encourage Aboriginal students to maintain their cultural identity within the university setting. Can J Psychiatry. 2011;56(12):Ye

The complex Y-chromosomal history of gorillas

    Get PDF
Studies of the evolutionary relationships among gorilla populations using autosomal and mitochondrial sequences suggest that male-mediated gene flow may have been important in the past, but data on the Y-chromosomal relationships among the gorilla subspecies are limited. Here, we genotyped blood and noninvasively collected fecal samples from 12 captives and 257 wild male gorillas of known origin representing all four subspecies (Gorilla gorilla gorilla, G. g. diehli, G. beringei beringei, and G. b. graueri) at 10 Y-linked microsatellite loci resulting in 102 unique Y-haplotypes for 224 individuals. We found that western lowland gorilla (G. g. gorilla) haplotypes were consistently more diverse than any other subspecies for all measures of diversity and comprised several genetically distinct groups. However, these did not correspond to geographical proximity and some closely related haplotypes were found several hundred kilometers apart. Similarly, our broad sampling of eastern gorillas revealed that mountain (G. b. beringei) and Grauer's (G. b. graueri) gorilla Y-chromosomal haplotypes did not form distinct clusters. These observations suggest structure in the ancestral population with subsequent mixing of differentiated haplotypes by male dispersal for western lowland gorillas, and postisolation migration or incomplete lineage sorting due to short divergence times for eastern gorillas

Are three‐day voiding diaries feasible and reliable? Results from the Symptoms of Lower Urinary Tract Dysfunction Research Network (LURN) cohort

AimsThe aims of this study were to assess the completeness of voiding diaries in a research context and to correlate diary data with patient‐reported questionnaires.MethodsMen and women enrolled in the Symptoms of Lower Urinary Tract Dysfunction Research Network (LURN) were given a 3‐day voiding and fluid‐intake diary to fill‐out. Diaries were assessed for completeness and intake‐output imbalances. They were assigned to one of four categories based on a percentage of missing data and fluid imbalance: no diary submitted, unusable (>40% missing void or intake volumes, or unphysiological fluid imbalance), usable but not complete, and complete.ResultsA total of 1064 participants were enrolled and 85% (n = 902) returned the bladder diary. Of the diaries returned, 94% (n = 845) had data on three separate days, 87% (n = 786) had no missing intake volumes, 61% (n = 547) had no missing voided volumes, and 70% (n = 635) had a fluid imbalance within 3 L across the 3‐day time period, resulting in 50% (n = 448) of participants with 100% complete diaries. Younger age was associated with a higher likelihood of not submitting a diary, or submitting an unusable diary. Women had a higher likelihood of submitting an unusable diary or a usable but incomplete diary.ConclusionOverall, 50% of LURN participants returned voiding diaries with perfectly complete data. Incomplete data for voided volumes was the most common deficiency. There was only a moderate correlation between diary data and questionnaire responses, indicating that diaries are a source of unique information.Peer Reviewedhttps://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/152022/1/nau24113.pdfhttps://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/152022/2/nau24113_am.pd
