Evaluation of a Ninth Grade Transition Program for At-Risk Students.

    Get PDF
Researchers have identified the transition from middle to high school as a critical point in teenagers\u27 educational development. Despite sweeping educational reforms, many students are leaving high school without graduating. Local school districts are struggling to redesign high schools to provide the educational programs necessary for at-risk students\u27 success. Creating smaller learning communities and developing transition programs have shown success in addressing these problems. Sustained research shows promise in minimizing the effects of the transition process and adds to the body of knowledge. A case study approach using archival data was used to explore the differences in three Bearcat PRIDE treatment groups and their 8th (pre-treatment) and 9th (post-treatment) grade measures. Results of this study suggested students who participated in the Bearcat PRIDE program showed greater success in academic performance, reduced disciplinary actions, increased school attendance, and participation in extra-curricular activities of their 8th (pre-treatment) and 9th (post-treatment) grade measures

    Reproductive Healthcare for incarcerated Women

    Get PDF
For years, incarcerated women have received less attention and care than incarcerated men. This problem is especially disparate when responding to the reproductive healthcare of incarcerated women. Most jails and prisons do not distinguish between men’s and women’s healthcare—assuming a one-size fits all approach. Within most jails, pregnancy tests are not administered upon admission and rely on self-report, resulting in a knowledge gap on prevalence rates. Women may not report due to being unaware; they may also be reluctant to disclose due to fear of intervention by child welfare services. Lack of awareness and/or comfort, coupled with minimal healthcare options, can increase stress for expecting mothers, contributing to health concerns for both mother and baby. There remains a glaring lack of consideration for pregnant incarcerated women. Policy implications can begin to address such needs at various levels within the criminal justice system (e.g., jail versus prison)

Building momentum for business school curriculum change: Measurable lessons from a pilot course in real business experience

    Get PDF
Curriculum change requires thoughtful planning and a willingness to experiment with different modes of content delivery. While many business schools are experimenting, few measure student outcomes against the traditional courses they replace. One element of Butler University\u27s College of Business Administration curriculum revision was a pilot course, Real Business Experience , in which students developed a professional business plan, sought and received funding from a professional level funding panel, and ran their businesses. To determine whether the pilot course was successful in reaching its goal of teaching students about the messiness of business and developing more adaptable and confident business leaders assessment instruments were used to identify student development in both the pilot and traditional courses. The analysis presented in this article suggests that the pilot course utilizing the constructivist approach was successful in achieving its goal, but not always in the ways expected

Thermocrinis minervae sp. nov., A Hydrogen and Sulfur-oxidizing, Thermophilic Member of the Aquificales from a Costa Rican Terrestrial Hot Spring

    Get PDF
A thermophilic bacterium, designated strain CR11T , was isolated from a filamentous sample collected from a terrestrial hot spring on the south-western foothills of the Rincón volcano in Costa Rica. The Gram-negative cells are approximately 2.4–3.9 mm long and 0.5–0.6 mm wide and are motile rods with polar flagella. Strain CR11T grows between 65 and 85 6C (optimum 75 6C, doubling time 4.5 h) and between pH 4.8 and 7.8 (optimum pH 5.9–6.5). The isolate grows chemolithotrophically with S0 , S2O2{ 3 or H2 as the electron donor and with O2 (up to 16 %, v/v) as the sole electron acceptor. The isolate can grow on mannose, glucose, maltose, succinate, peptone, Casamino acids, starch, citrate and yeast extract in the presence of oxygen (4 %) and S0 . Growth occurs only at NaCl concentrations below 0.4 % (w/v). The G+C content of strain CR11T is 40.3 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence places the strain as a close relative of Thermocrinis ruber OC 1/4T (95.7 % sequence similarity). Based on phylogenetic and physiological characteristics, we propose the name Thermocrinis minervae sp. nov., with CR11T (5DSM 19557T 5ATCC BAA-1533T ) as the type strain

Spatial organization and time dependence of Jupiter's tropospheric temperatures, 1980-1993

    Get PDF
The spatial organization and time dependence of Jupiter's temperature near 250-millibar pressure were measured through a jovian year by imaging thermal emission at 18 micrometers. The temperature field is influenced by seasonal radiative forcing, and its banded organization is closely correlated with the visible cloud field. Evidence was found for a quasi-periodic oscillation of temperatures in the Equatorial Zone, a correlation between tropospheric and stratospheric waves in the North Equatorial Belt, and slowly moving thermal features in the North and South Equatorial Belts. There appears to be no common relation between temporal changes of temperature and changes in the visual albedo of the various axisymmetric bands
