[2020 Honorable Mention] The Chinatown of Soledad Street: A Historical Analysis of a Multicultural Ethnic Enclave from early 20th century Salinas

    Get PDF
Abstract: The current conditions of the Salinas Chinatown cause many to avoid the area. In recent years, most have become unaware that Chinatown holds a significant part of our local history. The works of Lori A. Flores, and Rina Benmayor have served as an influence for engaging in this project. The main intent of this research is to expand on these works, and to support the notion that Chinatown’s history must be preserved. This study will provide a cohesive analysis which will look at themes that emerge from scholarly work and raw data. Between 2008 and 2015, Rina Benmayor led a project of collecting oral histories from individuals who interacted with Chinatown in the 20th century. This research will include content from these sources, as well as other materials dedicated to Chinatown’s history. The content of the findings will further elaborate on the themes found in the literature review. These themes include, but not limited to, social barriers, and cultural expression. Ultimately, this research will demonstrate that Salinas Chinatown possesses a significant part of our local history.https://digitalcommons.csumb.edu/esa_submissions/1088/thumbnail.jp

Leptospirosis in pigs, dogs, rodents, humans, and water in an area of the Colombian tropics

Leptospirosis is a reemerging zoonosis of global distribution and is one of the causes of hemorrhagic fevers in the tropics. We sought to determine seroprevalence in humans and animals and isolate Leptospira interrogans sensu lato in domestic animals, rodents, and water sources. The study was conducted in a tropical area of the middle SinĂș in Cordoba, Colombia. In a prospective descriptive study,we collected blood and urine from pigs and dogs, sera from rural human workers, sera and kidney macerates of rodents, and water samples from environmental sources. We used microagglutination to screen for antibodies to 13 serovars. Strains were cultured on the Ellinghausen–McCullough–Johnson–Harris medium and confirmed by PCR amplifying lipL32 gene. Seroprevalence was 55.9 % in pigs, 35.2 % in dogs, and 75.8 % in humans; no antibody was detected, and no Leptospira were isolated from kidney macerates of rodents. Seven L. interrogans sensu lato strains were isolated: three from pigs, two from dogs, and two from water. High seroprevalence in pigs, dogs, and humans, concomitant to isolation of strains, demonstrates that in Cordoba, transmission exists among animals, the environment, and humans, which warrants the implementation of public health intervention measures to reduce the epidemiological impact of leptospirosis in the region

Short Communication. Physiological effects of Rhizopogon Roseolus on Pinus halepensis seedlings

    Get PDF
Aim of study: The inoculation of forest seedlings with ectomycorrhizal fungi can improve the morphological and physiological qualities of plants, especially those used for regeneration of arid areas. Rhizopogon roseolus is an ectomycorrhizal fungus (ECM) commonly used for reforestation. In this study, the specific objectives were to know some morphophysiological effects of Rhizopogon Roseolus on Pinus halepensis seedlings under standard nursery conditionsArea of study: ETSI Montes and EUIT Forestal, Madrid.Material and Methods: In nursery, under well watered conditions and peat growing substrates, Aleppo pine seedlings were inoculated with R. roseolus. Five months after the inoculations, we examined the growth, water parameters (osmotic potential at full turgor [Κπfull], osmotic potential at zero turgor [Κπ0], and the tissue modulus of elasticity near full turgor [Emax]), mycorrhizal colonization, and concentration and content of macronutrients in the seedlings. Subsequently, a trial was conducted to assess the root growth potential.Main results: The mycorrhization decreased the height and diameter of mycorrhizal seedlings but increased the root weight and root branching. R. roseolus did not cause any significant effect on the regeneration of new roots or on any of the tested hydric parameters, but it did improve N uptake of the seedlings.Research highlights: The mycorrhizal inoculation increased the N uptake. The mycorrhizal inoculation caused opposite effects on some growth parametersKeywords: Osmotic adjustment; elastic adjustment; mineral nutrition; root growth potential; nursery; Rhizopogon roseolus;  Pinus halepensis.

Viral Zoonoses That Fly with Bats: A Review

    Get PDF
Emerging infectious diseases are a growing threat to human health and a great challenge for global medical attention systems. Governmental agencies in tropical regions with abundant zoonotic pathogens should implement an active vigilance/monitoring model in bat reservoir populations because of their species richness, abundance and dispersal capabilities. Chiropterans represent approximately 20% of all mammal species, the second largest order in terms of number of species after rodents. Importantly, bats constitute natural reservoirs for potential infection of humans of several infectious disease agents such as Coronavirus, Filovirus, Lyssavirus, Paramyxovirus, and Flavivirus. Local disease outbreaks caused by new pathogens can expand globally as a result of human intrusion on wildlife ecosystems and subsequent dispersion of pathogens facilitated by international travel—for example, what happened in 2003 during the severe acute respiratory syndrome pandemic (SARS). At this time, it is not possible to predict which pathogen will cross the species barrier in the future. Nonetheless, a better understanding of a holistic transmission process could help the design of strategies to prevent and control of future pandemics. In this work, we present a summary of the potential societal (economic and epidemiological) effect of disease outbreaks of virus families associated with bats, and the preventive and control measures that could be anticipated

Analytical and economic methodology for storage of large heavyweight equipment in industrial processes

    Get PDF
Numerous studies concerning warehouse-design methodologies have been performed focused on the storage of products on pallets or of intermediate size and/or moderate weight loads. These studies, however, do not provide with optimal results for industries that work with equipment or objects of uncommon sizes and shapes and with large weights, which are difficult to move and involve high costs and complex operational actions, affecting to the production processes and interfering with the logistic processes or the supply-chain of a company. This study proposes an analytical methodology using economic and technical qualitative criteria that can be applied specifically to large and heavy equipment warehouses. Both quantitative aspects, such as availability and cost of space, and also qualitative considerations, such as flexibility requirements, impact on manufacturing process and risks associated, are evaluated. To determine an optimum implementation solution, several decision-making methods, such as Electra I & II and Analytic Hierarchy Process are employed with due consideration of multiple criteria. The results obtained are modulated and reinforced using a SWOT (strengths-weaknesses, opportunities- threats) and a Risk analysis to verify this single ultimate solution. The said process led to the establishment of a decision-making methodology suitable for any organization possessing large-scale storage systems

This article examines the treaties of guerrillas, manuals, military regulations and ordinances that were read and met by soldiers, militants, guerrillas, officials armed citizens, and all of them faced with the dilemma of the war or to achieve a stable and permanent peace. The focus is directed at the armed citizens who, after belonging to several corps (militants, guerrillas, national guards), ended up incorporated into a single military force: the liberating army, who played a decisive role in the construction of the State and in the expansion of citizenship, reaffirming a clearly liberal conception of the local society of that time.
