    Impact of Horse Grazing on Floristic Diversity in Mediterranean Small Standing-Water Ecosystems (SWEs)

    Small standing-Water Ecosystems (SWEs), despite their pivotal ecological role due to their participation in hydrogeological processes and their richness in biodiversity, seem to be often overlooked by the scientific community. In this study, the vascular plant diversity in some representative SWEs, that host a peculiar assemblage of plant and animal species, was investigated in relation to the disturbance effects of a wild horse population. A total of 50 plots, equally distributed in small and large SWEs, were surveyed and a level of disturbance was attributed to each plot. We found greater species richness in small and undisturbed SWEs, which suggests the negative impact of horse grazing on the richness of plant species in this type of habitat. Significant differences in plant assemblage were found according to the disturbance level, whereas, contrary to what was observed for species richness, no differences were detected based on their size. The diversity indices, used to evaluate the richness and diversity in these areas, recorded the highest values for small and undisturbed areas. This result highlights that the disturbance of the horse grazing plays a pivotal role in affecting the diversity and richness of species in the SWEs. These findings suggest that SWE systems should be analyzed considering these areas as unique in order to allow the conservation of the plant richness and biodiversity of the SWE systems in conjunction with the protection of horses

    Translocations of threatened plants in the Mediterranean Basin: current status and future directions

    The Mediterranean Basin is one of the World's plant diversity hotspots and a region prone to several anthropic pressures, besides being one of the World's areas most susceptible to climate change. In this region, which hosts a high percentage of threatened species, there has been a large increase in practical conservation actions to prevent the extinction of many plants or improve their conservation status. In this framework, plant translocations have become increasingly important. To obtain a picture of the status and to depict possible directions, data on plant translocations was collected through the available databases, national experts, and the grey literature available online. Overall, a list of 836 translocations relating to 572 plant species was found. These actions are mainly concentrated in Spain, France, and Italy (c. 87%) and, except for some pioneering actions, translocations have strongly increased starting from 2010. A subsequent in-depth bibliographic search of the scientific databases was conducted to determine how much information about plant translocations was documented in the scientific literature. This search resulted in a list of 133 peer-reviewed papers, of which only 17 describing one or more translocations and, as a whole, reporting 101 experiences carried out on 56 plant species. Our research highlighted a great discrepancy between the scarce scientific documentation in comparison to the large number of practical conservation actions carried out. The great experience gained in these translocations constitutes an enormous heritage potentially available to implement the necessary conservation actions to preserve the plant diversity of the Mediterranean Basin

    Nel 2007 sono state condotte due campagne di misura dell’ozono troposferico in provincia di Trento, una a scala locale (Maggio-Giugno) ed una provinciale (Giugno- Settembre). I dati così raccolti, unitamente a quelli della rete di centraline automatiche APPA, ai dati meteoclimatici (Temperatura e Precipitazioni) ed ai dati territoriali (quote, uso del suolo) sono stati considerati per valutare la possibilità di modellare le concentrazioni di ozono sul territorio provinciale. Sono stati seguiti due approcci, uno di tipo statistico, mediante l’uso della PLSR (Partial Least Square Regression), ed uno di tipo geostatistico, che ha considerato la dipendenza spaziale dei dati. Questi due approcci sono stati dapprima studiati relativamente ad un periodo di due settimane, tra il 13 ed il 27 Giugno 2007, considerando separatamente ciascuna settimana e poi la media delle due. Questo periodo è stato scelto perché era quello comune alle due campagne di misurazione e permetteva di massimizzare la numerosità delle osservazioni. Entrambi gli approcci hanno identificato la quota, la temperatura e le precipitazioni come i principali predittori dei livelli di ozono in Trentino, seppur con pesi diversi a seconda del periodo considerato. La validazione su siti indipendenti ha evidenziato errori medi assoluti pari al 28.6% (approccio statistico) e 16.1% (approccio geostatistico). L’RMSEP (Root- Mean-Square-Error of Prediction, una misura delle differenze tra il valore vero ed il valore predetto, espressa nella stessa unità di misura della variabile di interesse) è risultato leggermente migliore nel modello derivante dall’approccio geostatistico, per il quale anche la varianza spiegata è risultata superiore. In virtù dei minori errori, l’approccio geostatistico è stato quindi applicato per le stime a scala provinciale e per la previsione delle concentrazioni medie sul periodo Giugno-Settembre. Quota e precipitazioni sono risultati i predittori significativi che permettono di massimizzare la prestazione del modello con il minor numero di predittori. Le stime così ottenute sono state validate mediante Cross-Validation attraverso la procedura di Leave-One-Out, che ha evidenziato scostamenti medi dai dati misurati pari a 13.98 μg*m-3. Le stime indicano valori di ozono superiori (fino anche ad oltre 180 μg*m-3) nella parte occidentale della provincia, a ridosso dell’Adamello, e nel settore nord-orientale, dalla Marmolada al Primiero (120-180 μg*m-3). In queste zone l’AOT40 (stimato sul periodo metà Giugno-metà Settembre) arriva a valori 3-4 volte superiori al Target stabilito dalla Direttiva EU per la protezione della vegetazione. Merita ricordare tuttavia che esistono aree con misurazioni assenti (es. area centro-occidentale della provincia) che possono avere influenza nella formulazione del modello e sulla precisione delle stime. I risultati ottenuti sono promettenti e dimostrano la praticabilità dell’approccio seguito, che potrebbe portare a sviluppi applicativi interessanti: con l’aggiunta di una componente dinamica (tempo), si potrebbero ottenere stime e previsioni più robuste; sovrapponendo le stime dei livelli di ozono con altri layer informativi sarebbero possibili stime di rischio, oltrechè per la popolazione, anche per ecosistemi e vegetazione; diventerebbero fattibili una mappatura routinaria delle aree a rischio e studi correlativi sul possibile ruolo dell’ozono sulle condizioni dei boschi trentini

    On the tracks of Nitrogen deposition effects on temperate forests at their southern European range - an observational study from Italy

    We studied forest monitoring data collected at permanent plots in Italy over the period 2000\u20132009 to identify the possible impact of nitrogen (N) deposition on soil chemistry, tree nutrition and growth. Average N throughfall (N-NO3+N-NH4) ranged between 4 and 29 kg ha 1 yr 1, with Critical Loads (CLs) for nutrient N exceeded at several sites. Evidence is consistent in pointing out effects of N deposition on soil and tree nutrition: topsoil exchangeable base cations (BCE) and pH decreased with increasing N deposition, and foliar nutrient N ratios (especially N : P and N : K) increased. Comparison between bulk openfield and throughfall data suggested possible canopy uptake of N, levelling out for bulk deposition >4\u20136 kg ha 1 yr 1. Partial Least Square (PLS) regression revealed that - although stand and meteorological variables explained the largest portion of variance in relative basal area increment (BAIrel 2000\u20132009) - N-related predictors (topsoil BCE, C : N, pH; foliar N-ratios; N deposition) nearly always improved the BAIrel model in terms of variance explained (from 78.2 to 93.5%) and error (from 2.98 to 1.50%). N deposition was the strongest predictor even when stand, management and atmosphere-related variables (meteorology and tropospheric ozone) were accounted for. The maximal annual response of BAIrel was estimated at 0.074\u20130.085% for every additional kgN. This corresponds to an annual maximal relative increase of 0.13\u20130.14% of carbon sequestered in the above-ground woody biomass for every additional kgN, i.e. a median value of 159 kgC per kgN ha 1 yr 1 (range: 50\u2013504 kgC per kgN, depending on the site). Positive growth response occurred also at sites where signals of possible, perhaps recent N saturation were detected. This may suggest a time lag for detrimental N effects, but also that, under continuous high N input, the reported positive growth response may be not sustainable in the long-term

    A Decolonial Critique of the Racialized “Localwashing” of Extraction in Central Africa

    Responding to calls for increased attention to actions and reactions “from above” within the extractive industry, we offer a decolonial critique of the ways in which corporate entities and multinational institutions propagate racialized rhetoric of “local” suffering, “local” consultation, and “local” fault for failure in extractive zones. Such rhetoric functions to legitimize extractive intervention within a set of practices that we call localwashing. Drawing from a decade of research on and along the Chad-Cameroon Oil Pipeline, we show how multi-scalar actors converged to assert knowledge of, responsibility for, and collaborations with “local” people within a racialized politics of scale. These corporate representations of the racialized “local” are coded through long-standing colonial tropes. We identify three interrelated and overlapping flexian elite rhetoric(s) and practices of racialized localwashing: (a) anguishing, (b) arrogating, and (c) admonishing. These elite representations of a racialized “local” reveal diversionary efforts “from above” to manage public opinion, displace blame for project failures, and domesticate dissent in a context of persistent scrutiny and criticism from international and regional advocates and activists

    Testing an expanded set of sustainable forest management indicators in Mediterranean coppice area

    Although coppice forests represent a significant part of the European forest area, especially across southern Countries, they received little attention within the Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) processes and scenarios, whose guidelines have been mainly designed to high forests and national scale. In order to obtain “tailored” information on the degree of sustainability of coppices on the scale of the stand, we evaluated (i) whether the main coppice management options result in different responses of the SFM indicators, and (ii) the degree to which the considered SFM indicators were appropriate in their application at stand level. The study considered three different management options (Traditional Coppice TC, coppice under Natural Evolution NE, and coppice under Conversion to high forest by means of periodical thinning CO). In each of the 43 plots considered in the study, which covered three different European Forest Types, we applied a set of eighteen “consolidated” SFM indicators, covering all the six SFM Criteria (FOREST EUROPE, 2020) and, additionally, tested other sixteen novel indicators shaped for agamic forests and/or applicable at stand level. Results confirmed that several consolidated indicators related to resources status (Growing stock and Carbon stock), health (Defoliation and Forest damage), and socio-economic functions (Net revenue, Energy and Accessibility) were highly appropriate for evaluating the sustainability of coppice at stand level. In addition, some novel indicators related to resources status (Total above ground tree biomass), health (Stand growth) and protective functions (Overstorey cover and Understorey cover) proved to be highly appropriate and able to support the information obtained by the consolidated ones. As a consequence, a subset of consolidated SFM indicators, complemented with the most appropriate novel ones, may represent a valid option to support the evaluation of coppice sustainability at stand level. An integrated analysis of the SFM indicators showed that NE and CO display significant higher environmental performances as compared with TC. In addition, CO has positive effects also on socio-economic issues, while TC -which is an important cultural heritage and a silvicultural option that may help to keep local communities engaged in forestry – combines high wood harvesting rates with dense understory cover. Overall, each of the three management options showed specific sustainability values; as a consequence, their coexistence at a local scale and in accordance with the specific environmental conditions and the social-economic context, is greatly recommended since it may fulfill a wider array of sustainability issue

    Creatine transporter defect diagnosed by proton NMR spectroscopy in males with intellectual disability.

    Creatine deficiency syndrome due to mutations in X-linked SLC6A8 gene results in nonspecific intellectual disability (ID). Diagnosis cannot be established on clinical grounds and is often based on the assessment of brain creatine levels by magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS). Considering high costs of MRS and necessity of sedation, this technique cannot be used as a first level-screening test. Likewise, gene test analysis is time consuming and not easily accessible to all laboratories. In this article feasibility of urine analysis (creatine/creatinine (Cr/Crn) ratio) performed by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) as a first level-screening test is explored. Before running a systematic selection of cases a preliminary study for further molecular analysis is shown. NMR urine spectra (n = 1,347) of male patients with an ID without a clinically recognizable syndrome were measured. On the basis of abnormal Cr/Crn ratio, three patients with the highest values were selected for molecular analysis. A confirmatory second urine test was positive in two patients and diagnosis was further confirmed by a decreased brain creatine level and by SLC6A8 gene analysis. A de novo mutation was identified in one. Another patient inherited a novel mutation from the mother who also has a mild ID. A repeat urine test was negative in the third patient and accordingly creatine level in the brain and SLC6A8 gene analysis both gave a normal result. We conclude that Cr/Crn ratio measured by NMR for male patients represents a rapid and useful first level screening test preceding molecular analysis

    Governance of microfinance institutions (MFIs) in Cameroon: What lessons can we learn?

    The aim of this paper is to find out the effects of the COBAC regulations regulating the microfinance industry on the governance of microfinance institutions (MFIs) in Cameroon. The paper is based on 35 in-depth interviews carried out from May to June 2011 and June to July 2012 with managers and accountants from MFIs in Cameroon, MFI clients and non-clients, regulatory authorities in the Ministry of Finance, and accounting professionals. The findings show that the regulations have broken down the governance within the MFIs in Cameroon thus turning MFIs into hybrid organizations with managers striving to meet their shareholders' interests
