Are there biological gender differences at the early stages of first language acquisition when producing double object constructions and to/for-datives?

Producción CientíficaThis study examines whether biological gender differences appear in the early stages of acquisition in the case of English dative alternation (DA) structures (double object constructions (DOCs) and to/for-datives). Girls have been found to show faster syntactic development when compared to boys (Lovas, 2011). In the case of the acquisition of DA, an order in the emergence and in the incidence of English DA would entail a syntactic derivational status between DOCs and to/for-datives with one being the original structure and the other the derived one (Gu, 2010). However, analogous ages of onset and fairly similar frequency rates in the production could suggest the construction of two underived structures. We investigate whether biological gender differences appear in the case of DOCs and to/for-datives. We also investigate whether the exposure to English DA (adult input) results in differences between the girls’ output and the boys’ output. We analyze data from eight monolingual English girls and five monolingual English boys, and the adults that interact with them, as available in CHILDES. Our findings reveal that monolingual girls and monolingual boys pattern closely in the acquisition of the syntactic non-derivational relationship between DOCs and to/for-datives, as seen in their similar emergence. Biological gender differences are not seen either in the acquisition of the additional properties of to/for-datives given their later onset and their lower incidence when compared to DOCs. These production patterns also correlate with the frequency with which these structures are heard in the adult input.Junta de Castilla y León (programa de apoyo a proyectos de investigación - Ref. Dimuon results in PbPb and pp collisions in CMS

The LHC offers unique opportunities for studying the properties of hot QCD matter created in Pb+Pb collisions at extreme temperatures and very low parton momentum fractions. With its high precision, large acceptance for tracking and calorimetry, and a trigger scheme that allows analysis of each minimum bias Pb+Pb event, CMS is fully equipped to measure dimuons in the high multiplicity environment of Pb+Pb collisions. Such probes are especially relevant since they are produced at early times and propagate through the medium, mapping its evolution. The capabilities of the CMS experiment to study dimuon production in pp and Pb+Pb collisions based on the 2010 LHC runs will be reviewed. CMS is able to measure primary and secondary J/psi, as well as the three Upsilon states. Quarkonia results at sqrt(s)=2.76 TeV in pp and Pb+Pb will be presented, including a tantalizing observation of suppression of the Upsilon excited states. The Z0 boson inclusive and differential measurement as a probe of the initial state will be described.Comment: 3 pages, 4 figures. To appear in the proceedings of PANIC 201

Effect of TPU chemistry and concentration on the cellular structure of nanocellular polymers based on PMMA/TPU blends

Nanocellular polymers are characterized by cell sizes in the range of tens to hundreds of nanometers and cell densities greater than 1013 cells/cm3. These materials have aroused great interest in the area of Materials Science due to their interesting properties, such as a reduced thermal conductivity, better mechanical properties and the possibility of producing cellular materials with a certain transparency. In this work, nanocellular polymers based on poly(methyl-methacrylate) (PMMA) have been produced by gas dissolution foaming using thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) as a nucleating agent. Three grades of TPU with a different fraction of hard segments (60%, 70% and 80%) have been used in different contents (0.5 wt%, 2 wt% and 5 wt% in PMMA). First, the morphology of solid materials has been studied, observing that the TPU phase appears as a dispersed phase in the PMMA matrix forming nanometric domains. The PMMA/TPU foamed samples are characterised by a gradient of the cell size from the edge of the sample towards the core. The cells near the edges are micrometric and cells in the core are nanometric. The presence of the nanometric cells in the core is due to the nucleating effect of the TPU. The cellular structure has been characterised in these PMMA/TPU samples. Specifically, the evolution of the cellular parameters (relative density, cell size and cell nucleation density) have been analysed in the nanocellular core as a function of the TPU content and of the fraction of hard segments in the TPU. On the one hand, as the TPU content increases, the nucleation density increases, and the cell size is reduced due to the increment in the number of TPU domains dispersed in the solid. On the other hand, by increasing the fraction of hard segments in the TPU, the cell nucleation density increases, and the cell size is reduced due to a better dispersion of the TPU. As the content of hard segments increases, the molecular weight of the TPU is higher. In addition, as the molecular weight of the TPU approaches the PMMA molecular weight the size of the domains is reduced, increasing the density of domains. Nanocellular polymers have been obtained with a relative density between 0.15 and 0.20 and cell sizes between 220 and 640 nm.Departamento de Física de la Materia Condensada, Cristalografía y MineralogíaMáster en Físic

Combinatoria léxica y corpus como input

Computer based corpora which have been statistically analyzed have lead to the recognition of frequent lexical sequences (also known as multiword expressions, prefabricated chunks or collocations- in a loose use of the term- as a very important component of language production. Spontaneous interactions demand the storage of the phrasal element during the encod ing and decoding of the message. Corpus studies, apart from improving the descriptions of lexis contribute, by means of the Applied Cognitive Linguistics proposals, to the learning process of these units with activities conveniently designed. This article brings an approach which combines the applications of corpora with the benefits of collocations- in a restricted use of the term- when the lexical competence is being developed. The aim is to provide the ability to identify collocations by using the input contained in the corpora, which it will lead to the production of many different combinations, once the connections between a predicate and its arguments have been established

Teenager magazines constitute a clearly delineated discourse which has been researched from a philological perspective for some time. Drawing on this field, this paper proposes to analyse the textual representation of celebrities in these publications. The detailed study of the linguistic devices deployed to construe these personalities will provide conclusions as to their roles in the magazines and, consequently, the relationship constructed between the portrayal of the stars and the readership.peerReviewe
