    Who Volunteers for Adult Development Research? Research Findings and Practical Steps to Reach Low Volunteering Groups

    The present study is an attempt to determine volunteering bias in racial, gender, and age groups in an adult development study. Samples were drawn from three different types of organizations in the Columbia, South Carolina SMSA. Volunteering rates were calculated as a function of the number eligible to participate in three age groups: 1) young adult (aged 20-25); 2) middle adult (aged 40-45); and 3) old (aged 60-80). The middle group volunteered at a higher rate than the other two age groups, but this effect was restricted to the white sample. Women volunteered more readily than men, but not among the elderly. Whites volunteered more readily than blacks. In order to overcome these volunteering biases, special recruitment procedures were employed in order to obtain a sample which adequately represents the populations in question

    Practical guidance for running late-phase platform protocols for clinical trials: lessons from experienced UK clinical trials units

    Background Late-phase platform protocols (including basket, umbrella, multi-arm multi-stage (MAMS), and master protocols) are generally agreed to be more efficient than traditional two-arm clinical trial designs but are not extensively used. We have gathered the experience of running a number of successful platform protocols together to present some operational recommendations. Methods Representatives of six UK clinical trials units with experience in running late-phase platform protocols attended a 1-day meeting structured to discuss various practical aspects of running these trials. We report and give guidance on operational aspects which are either harder to implement compared to a traditional late-phase trial or are specific to platform protocols. Results We present a list of practical recommendations for trialists intending to design and conduct late-phase platform protocols. Our recommendations cover the entire life cycle of a platform trial: from protocol development, obtaining funding, and trial set-up, to a wide range of operational and regulatory aspects such as staffing, oversight, data handling, and data management, to the reporting of results, with a particular focus on communication with trial participants and stakeholders as well as public and patient involvement. Discussion Platform protocols enable many questions to be answered efficiently to the benefit of patients. Our practical lessons from running platform trials will support trial teams in learning how to run these trials more effectively and efficiently

    Aggression Levels Following Frustration of Abusing Versus Nonabusing College Males

    A classic aggression paradigm was used to assess the relationship between aggressive and nonaggressive college males (n = 74). Subjects were exposed to no-, low-, or high-frustration conditions where a female confederate thwarted their attainment of a goal. Subjects then had the opportunity to electrically shock the confederate. Intensity and duration of shock were the dependent measures. Frustration conditions did not result in a significant main effect, but aggression in subjects\u27 relationship histories produced a significant main effect for both intensity and duration of shock. There was also a significant repeated measures effect for both intensity and duration of shock. Relationship-aggressive males reported higher rates of verbal, emotional, and physical abuse in relationships as well as more physically abusive experiences from parents and more fights with other males. For males with a history of relationship aggression, situational cues may not be as important for eliciting aggression as their propensity for aggression, which may be stimulated by a situation with aggressive components

    Extracellular regulators of axonal growth in the adult central nervous system

    Robust axonal growth is required during development to establish neuronal connectivity. However, stable fibre patterns are necessary to maintain adult mammalian central nervous system (CNS) function. After adult CNS injury, factors that maintain axonal stability limit the recovery of function. Extracellular molecules play an important role in preserving the stability of the adult CNS axons and in restricting recovery from pathological damage. Adult axonal growth inhibitors include a group of proteins on the oligodendrocyte, Nogo-A, myelin-associated glycoprotein, oligodendrocyte-myelin glycoprotein and ephrin-B3, which interact with axonal receptors, such as NgR1 and EphA4. Extracellular proteoglycans containing chondroitin sulphates also inhibit axonal sprouting in the adult CNS, particularly at the sites of astroglial scar formation. Therapeutic perturbations of these extracellular axonal growth inhibitors and their receptors or signalling mechanisms provide a degree of axonal sprouting and regeneration in the adult CNS. After CNS injury, such interventions support a partial return of neurological function
