PIV measurements using refraction at a solid/fluid interface
Laser light sheet refraction at the fluid flow/window interface is proposed
to proceed fluorescent PIV measurements, in particular for cases for which
optical access limits the possibilities of illuminating a flow with a planar
collimated light sheet. The study of the laser sheet propagation for the
present measurement method is led with ray tracing to quantify the illumination
intensity. To describe the limitations of this developed PIV version (the
R-PIV), we proposed a cross-correlation model (CCM) for analysing image pairs
and that is an extension of the ones used in the cases of -PIV or P-PIV
techniques. This cross-correlation model accounts for the R-PIV optical
constraints as 1) in-depth and longitudinal inhomogeneities of the light sheet
refraction at the location of the object plane or 2) integration in depth of
the fluorescence from seeding particles. This refracted PIV (R-PIV) and the
P-PIV techniques are further compared in the case of an academic pipe flow
whose analytic solution is known. Our extended cross-correlation model function
is finally applied, knowing the theoretical flow velocity, the flow
illumination and the seeding flow parameters, to analyse some error levels in
determining the real flow velocity field.Comment: 40 pages, 27 figures. This is the version of the article before peer

Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) measurements in a water film, application to a tire rolling through a puddle
International audienceA measurement method based on Particle Image Velocimetry with refraction of the laser sheet at a win-dow/water interface is proposed for the measurement of the velocity field of a water flow formed by a tire moving inside a water puddle. This study focuses of the feasibility and repeatability of this optical measurement method. The characterization of the optical properties of the measurement technique defines the integration effect in height of the measurement method. The analysis of the overall features of the flow is focused on two main zones in front and around the tire. The flow inside the first zone is defined by a characteristic velocity of the water displaced in an area located in front of the tire ; in the second zone a characteristic velocity representative of the flow in the vicinity of the shoulder of the tire is also defined. Correlations of both characteristic velocities with the car speed and water film height are established. New and worn tires were tested in this work
Application of real-time global media monitoring and ‘derived questions’ for enhancing communication by regulatory bodies:the case of human papillomavirus vaccines
Abstract Background The benefit-risk balance of vaccines is regularly debated by the public, but the utility of media monitoring for regulatory bodies is unclear. A media monitoring study was conducted at the European Medicines Agency (EMA) concerning human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines during a European Union (EU) referral procedure assessing the potential causality of complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) and postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) reported to the authorities as suspected adverse reactions. Methods To evaluate the utility of media monitoring in real life, prospective real-time monitoring of worldwide online news was conducted from September to December 2015 with inductive content analysis, generating ‘derived questions’. The evaluation was performed through the validation of the predictive capacity of these questions against journalists’ queries, review of the EMA’s public statement and feedback from EU regulators. Results A total of 4230 news items were identified, containing personal stories, scientific and policy/process-related topics. Explicit and implicit concerns were identified, including those raised due to lack of knowledge or anticipated once more information would be published. Fifty derived questions were generated and categorised into 12 themes. The evaluation demonstrated that providing the media monitoring findings to assessors and communicators resulted in (1) confirming that public concerns regarding CRPS and POTS would be covered by the assessment; (2) meeting specific information needs proactively in the public statement; (3) predicting all queries from journalists; and (4) altering the tone of the public statement with respectful acknowledgement of the health status of patients with CRSP or POTS. Conclusions The study demonstrated the potential utility of media monitoring for regulatory bodies to support communication proactivity and preparedness, intended to support trusted safe and effective vaccine use. Derived questions seem to be a familiar and effective format for presenting media monitoring results in the scientific-regulatory environment. It is suggested that media monitoring could form part of regular surveillance for medicines of high public interest. Future work is recommended to develop efficient monitoring strategies for that purpose

This work was carried out in order to analize the ship incorporation history to the Argentine fishery fleet and the ship building policies in Argentine shipyards and ship importations. From fresher trawler fleet and freezer trawler fleet analysis we estimated optimum catch, possible catch, and natural stock for each fleet. A modern fresher fleet might reach the present value of the optimum catch, but it would not satisfy the total inshore fish factories demand unless equitable ratio between the optimum catch capacities of the fresher trawler fleet and the freezer trawler fleet be established.
In this work, the fluid flow in a water puddle while a rolling tire crosses the puddle is studied. A measurement method adapted to track measurements under a rolling tire is developed. This method, based on PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry), is based on the refraction of the laser light sheet at the flow/window interface. This allows us to illuminate particles and record their images from a single optical access. This technique called refracted PIV (R-PIV) is characterised with a laboratory controlled experiment. When characterised, this technique is applied to in-situ measurements on the track. Measurements performed allow to highlight specific behaviours in different parts of the flow, in front of the tire and inside tire grooves in the contact patch area between the tire and the road. In front of the tire, the linear evolution of the water velocity in the puddle as a function of the vehicle speed is demonstrated. At high vehicle speed, non-linear effects are highlighted and linked to the shape of the contact patch area which evolves at high vehicle speed. Under the tire contact patch area, two main types of grooves contribute to the draining of water. Firstly, the longitudinal grooves are the straight grooves aligned with the rolling direction. In these grooves, the velocity of the fluid flow depends on the vehicle speed and also on the presence or not of the wear indicator. A secondary vortex like flow structure is also demonstrated in this work. The second type of grooves are the transverse grooves which are the grooves oriented with a certain angle compared to the car rolling direction. In these grooves, this work proved that the velocity is dependent on the groove location in the contact patch area. This seems to be linked to the tire deformation with the load of the car in the contact patch area.
