This paper presents a generalised version of a previous algorithm which tests if an abstraction of a DES obtained through natural projection has the observer property. The procedure called OP-verifier II overcomes the limitations of the previously proposed verifier while keeping its computational complexity. Results are illustrated by a case study of a transfer line system

    The observer property is an important condition to be satisfied by abstractions of Discrete Event System (DES) models. This technical note presents a new algorithm that tests if an abstraction of a DES obtained through natural projection has the observer property. The procedure, called OP-Verifier, can be applied to (potentially nondeterministic) automata, with no restriction on the existence of cycles of 'non-relevant' events. This procedure has quadratic complexity in the number of states. The performance of the algorithm is illustrated by a set of experiments

    Involvement of formyl peptide receptors in the stimulatory effect of crotoxin on macrophages co-cultivated with tumour cells

    Crotoxin (CTX) is the main neurotoxic component of Crotalus durissus terrificus snake venom. It inhibits tumour growth and modulates the function of macrophages, which are essential cells in the tumour microenvironment. the present study investigated the effect of CTX on the secretory activity of monocultured macrophages and macrophages co-cultivated with LLC-WRC 256 cells. the effect of the macrophage secretory activities on tumour cell proliferation was also evaluated. Macrophages pre-treated with CTX (0.3 mu g/mL) for 2 h were co-cultivated with LLC-WRC 256 cells, and the secretory activity of the macrophages was determined after 12, 24 and 48 h. the co-cultivation of CTX-treated macrophages with the tumour cells caused a 20% reduction in tumour cell proliferation. the production of both H2O2 and NO was increased by 41% and 29% after 24 or 48 h of co-cultivation, respectively, compared to the values for the co-cultures of macrophages of control. the level of secreted IL-1 beta increased by 3.7- and 3.2-fold after 12 h and 24 h of co-cultivation, respectively. Moreover, an increased level of LXA(4) (25%) was observed after 24 h of co-cultivation, and a 2.3- and 2.1-fold increased level of 15-epi-LXA(4) was observed after 24 h and 48 h, respectively. Boc-2, a selective antagonist of formyl peptide receptors, blocked both the stimulatory effect of CTX on the macrophage secretory activity and the inhibitory effect of these cells on tumour cell proliferation. Taken together, these results indicate that CTX enhanced the secretory activity of macrophages, which may contribute to the antitumour activity of these cells, and that activation of formyl peptide receptors appears to play a major role in this effect.     The infectivity of SfMNPV on fall armyworm is influenced by the host plant.

    This work evaluated the infectivity and production of occlusion bodies (OBs) of the SfMNPV-6NR on fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda, when fed on different host plants. The experiment was performed in laboratory, in a completely randomized design using two concentrations of SfMNPV-6NR (2×106 and 2×107 OBs/mL) and six different host plants (soybean, corn, cotton, bean, sorghum and millet). The larval mortality, larval weight (LW), pupal weight (PW) of S. frugiperda and the production of OBs by virus were evaluated. S. frugiperda larvae were less susceptible to baculovirus when fed on cotton leaves (38 ± 4.17 and 70 ± 6.44% mortality) in the two concentrations tested (2×106 and 2×107 OBs/mL, respectively). The LW was affected by the virus concentration depending on the plant species consumed and the virus concentrations. The PW was affected by the plant species used to feed larvae. There was no effect of the host plant on the OBs virus production. The results demonstrate adverse effects of the host plant on the infectivity of the SfMNPV-6NR in S. frugiperda, especially a deleterious effect of the cotton plant in the virus infection capacity

    Casos clínicos – carcinoma de células escamosas oral

    Este estudo apresenta dois casos clínicos com carcinoma de células escamosas oral com comprometimento ósseo. Um caso clínico de paciente, em estado avançado, diagnosticado no Curso de Odontologia do UniFOA e outro no Centro Odontológico Bergonsil de Oliveira Magalhães, ambos acompanhado e proservado por profissionais da Associação de Aposentados e Pensionistas de Volta Redonda. O carcinoma de células escamosas representa de 90 a 95% dos neoplasmas malignos da cavidade oral, também conhecido como carcinoma espino-celular ou epidermóide. De etiologia discutível e multifatorial. Alguns autores abordam fatores genéticos, ambientais e comportamentais. O fumo e o álcool são considerados atores de risco de relevância. Hábitos pessoais, a higiene precária, como também a desnutrição merecem atenção. A rotina seguida pelas disciplinas de Diagnóstico Clínico/Semiologia, Diagnóstico Clínico/Estomatologia, Radiologia Odontológica e Imaginologia ao receber e examinar os pacientes, está subordinada ao Prontuário Odontológico que abrange a anamnese, o exame clínico envolvendo o exame físico extra e intra-oral e exames complementares. Os pacientes que apresentam lesões com características neoplásicas, após a biópsia e em caso positivo, são encaminhados a serviços especializados, para o respectivo tratamento, que é por nós acompanhados. Para diagnosticar foi necessário reconhecer e diferenciar o processo. Priorizamos a urgência no atendimento por tratar-se de processo insidioso e de prognóstico duvidoso. Por reconhecermos após os exames objetivos e subjetivos trata-se, de processo cancerígeno, providenciamos o encaminhamento do paciente ao serviço especializado. A experiência do serviço de diagnóstico leva a uma grande preocupação com o estado atual do câncer de boca. Neste contexto, recomenda-se que condições sejam reunidas para que não haja falhas na execução do exame clínico oral e que o mesmo seja sempre realizado com a finalidade, também, de se detectar precocemente lesões precursoras e malignas

    Coronary Artery Plaque Characterization from CCTA Scans Using Deep Learning and Radiomics

    Assessing coronary artery plaque segments in coronary CT angiography scans is an important task to improve patient management and clinical outcomes, as it can help to decide whether invasive investigation and treatment are necessary. In this work, we present three machine learning approaches capable of performing this task. The first approach is based on radiomics, where a plaque segmentation is used to calculate various shape-, intensity- and texture-based features under different image transformations. A second approach is based on deep learning and relies on centerline extraction as sole prerequisite. In the third approach, we fuse the deep learning approach with radiomic features. On our data the methods reached similar scores as simulated fractional flow reserve (FFR) measurements, which - in contrast to our methods - requires an exact segmentation of the whole coronary tree and often time-consuming manual interaction. In literature, the performance of simulated FFR reaches an AUC between 0.79–0.93 predicting an abnormal invasive FFR that demands revascularization. The radiomics approach achieves an AUC of 0.84, the deep learning approach 0.86 and the combined method 0.88 for predicting the revascularization decision directly. While all three proposed methods can be determined within seconds, the FFR simulation typically takes several minutes. Provided representative training data in sufficient quantities, we believe that the presented methods can be used to create systems for fully automatic non-invasive risk assessment for a variety of adverse cardiac events
