On the exact gravitational lens equation in spherically symmetric and static spacetimes
Lensing in a spherically symmetric and static spacetime is considered, based
on the lightlike geodesic equation without approximations. After fixing two
radius values r_O and r_S, lensing for an observation event somewhere at r_O
and static light sources distributed at r_S is coded in a lens equation that is
explicitly given in terms of integrals over the metric coefficients. The lens
equation relates two angle variables and can be easily plotted if the metric
coefficients have been specified; this allows to visualize in a convenient way
all relevant lensing properties, giving image positions, apparent brightnesses,
image distortions, etc. Two examples are treated: Lensing by a
Barriola-Vilenkin monopole and lensing by an Ellis wormhole.Comment: REVTEX, 11 pages, 12 eps-figures, figures partly improved, minor

A More Flavored Higgs boson in Supersymmetric models
A More flavored Higgs boson arises when the flavor structure encoded in SUSY
extensions of the SM is transmited to the Higgs sector. The flavor-Higgs
transmition mechanism can have a radiative or mixing origin, as it is
illustrated with several examples, and can produce interesting Higgs signatures
that can be probed at future high-energy colliders. Within the MSSM, the flavor
mediation mechanism can be of radiative type, as it is realized trhough
gaugino-slepton loops, which transmit the flavor structture of the
soft-breaking sector to the Higgs bosons. In particular we focus on evaluating
the contributions from the general trilinear terms to the lepton flavor
violating Higgs (LFV) vertices. On the other hand, as an example of flavor
mediation through mixing, we discuss an E_6 inspired multi-Higgs model, with an
abelian flavor symmetry, where LFV as well as lepton flavor conserving Higgs
effects are found to arise, though in this case at tree-level. We find that
Tevatron and LHC can provide information on the flavor structure of these
models through the detection of the LFV higgs mode h-> tau+mu, while NLC can
perform high-precision measurements of the LFC mode h-> tau tau.Comment: 17 pages, 5 tables, 3 figures; corrected mistake in last section,

Mass matrix Ansatz and lepton flavor violation in the THDM-III
Predictive Higgs-fermion couplings can be obtained when a specific texture
for the fermion mass matrices is included in the general two-Higgs doublet
model. We derive the form of these couplings in the charged lepton sector using
a Hermitian mass matrix Ansatz with four-texture zeros. The presence of
unconstrained phases in the vertices phi-li-lj modifies the pattern of
flavor-violating Higgs interactions. Bounds on the model parameters are
obtained from present limits on rare lepton flavor violating processes, which
could be extended further by the search for the decay tau -> mu mu mu and mu-e
conversion at future experiments. The signal from Higgs boson decays phi -> tau
mu could be searched at the large hadron collider (LHC), while e-mu transitions
could produce a detectable signal at a future e mu-collider, through the
reaction e mu -> h0 -> tau tau.Comment: 17 pages, 9 figure
New Higgs signals induced by mirror fermion mixing effects
We study the conditions under which flavor violation arises in scalar-fermion
interactions, as a result of the mixing phenomena between the standard model
and exotic fermions. Phenomenological consequences are discussed within the
specific context of a left-right model where these additional fermions have
mirror properties under the new SU(2)_R gauge group.
Bounds on the parameters of the model are obtained from LFV processes; these
results are then used to study the LFV Higgs decays (H --> tau l_j, l_j = e,
mu), which reach branching ratios that could be detected at future colliders.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures, ReVTex4, graphicx, to be published in Phys. Rev.
Particle motion in the field of a five-dimensional charged black hole
In this paper, we have investigated the geodesics of neutral particles near a
five-dimensional charged black hole using a comparative approach. The effective
potential method is used to determine the location of the horizons and to study
radial and circular trajectories. This also helps us to analyze the stability
of radial and circular orbits. The radius of the innermost stable circular
orbits have also been determined. Contrary to the case of massive particles for
which, the circular orbits may have up to eight possible values of specific
radius, we find that the photons will only have two distinct values for the
specific radii of circular trajectories. Finally we have used the dynamical
systems analysis to determine the critical points and the nature of the
trajectories for the timelike and null geodesics.Comment: 15 pages, accepted for publication in Astrophysics and Space Scienc
Finite Grand Unified Theories and the Quark Mixing Matrix
In N = 1 super Yang-Mills theories, under certain conditions satisfied by the
spectrum and the Yukawa couplings, the beta functions will vanish to all orders
in perturbation theory. We address the generation of realistic quark mixing
angles and masses in such finite Grand Unified Theories. Working in the context
of finite SUSY SU(5), we present several examples with realistic quark mixing
matrices. Non-Abelian discrete symmetries are found to be important in
satisfying the conditions for finiteness. Our realistic examples are based on
permutation symmetries and the tetrahedral symmetry . These examples
enable us to address questions such as the decay rate of the proton in finite
GUTs.Comment: 16 pages, LaTeX, typos correcte
Bianchi type II models in the presence of perfect fluid and anisotropic dark energy
Spatially homogeneous but totally anisotropic and non-flat Bianchi type II
cosmological model has been studied in general relativity in the presence of
two minimally interacting fluids; a perfect fluid as the matter fluid and a
hypothetical anisotropic fluid as the dark energy fluid. The Einstein's field
equations have been solved by applying two kinematical ans\"{a}tze: we have
assumed the variation law for the mean Hubble parameter that yields a constant
value of deceleration parameter, and one of the components of the shear tensor
has been considered proportional to the mean Hubble parameter. We have
particularly dwelled on the accelerating models with non-divergent expansion
anisotropy as the Universe evolves. Yielding anisotropic pressure, the fluid we
consider in the context of dark energy, can produce results that can be
produced in the presence of isotropic fluid in accordance with the \Lambda CDM
cosmology. However, the derived model gives additional opportunities by being
able to allow kinematics that cannot be produced in the presence of fluids that
yield only isotropic pressure. We have obtained well behaving cases where the
anisotropy of the expansion and the anisotropy of the fluid converge to finite
values (include zero) in the late Universe. We have also showed that although
the metric we consider is totally anisotropic, the anisotropy of the dark
energy is constrained to be axially symmetric, as long as the overall energy
momentum tensor possesses zero shear stress.Comment: 15 pages; 5 figures; matches the version published in The European

Protein intake and exercise for optimal muscle function with aging: recommendations from the ESPEN Expert Group.
The aging process is associated with gradual and progressive loss of muscle mass along with lowered strength and physical endurance. This condition, sarcopenia, has been widely observed with aging in sedentary adults. Regular aerobic and resistance exercise programs have been shown to counteract most aspects of sarcopenia. In addition, good nutrition, especially adequate protein and energy intake, can help limit and treat age-related declines in muscle mass, strength, and functional abilities. Protein nutrition in combination with exercise is considered optimal for maintaining muscle function. With the goal of providing recommendations for health care professionals to help older adults sustain muscle strength and function into older age, the European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN) hosted a Workshop on Protein Requirements in the Elderly, held in Dubrovnik on November 24 and 25, 2013. Based on the evidence presented and discussed, the following recommendations are made (a) for healthy older people, the diet should provide at least 1.0-1.2 g protein/kg body weight/day, (b) for older people who are malnourished or at risk of malnutrition because they have acute or chronic illness, the diet should provide 1.2-1.5 g protein/kg body weight/day, with even higher intake for individuals with severe illness or injury, and (c) daily physical activity or exercise (resistance training, aerobic exercise) should be undertaken by all older people, for as long as possible
Embodied Discourses of Literacy in the Lives of Two Preservice Teachers
This study examines the emerging teacher literacy identities of Ian and A.J., two preservice teachers in a graduate teacher education program in the United States. Using a poststructural feminisms theoretical framework, the study illustrates the embodiment of literacy pedagogy discourses in relation to the literacy courses’ discourse of comprehensive literacy and the literacy biographical discourses of Ian and A.J. The results of this study indicate the need to deconstruct how the discourse of comprehensive literacy limits how we, as literacy teacher educators, position, hear and respond to our preservice teachers and suggests the need for differentiation in our teacher education literacy courses
Particle motion and gravitational lensing in the metric of a dilaton black hole in a de Sitter universe
We consider the metric exterior to a charged dilaton black hole in a de
Sitter universe. We study the motion of a test particle in this metric.
Conserved quantities are identified and the Hamilton-Jacobi method is employed
for the solutions of the equations of motion. At large distances from the black
hole the Hubble expansion of the universe modifies the effective potential such
that bound orbits could exist up to an upper limit of the angular momentum per
mass for the orbiting test particle. We then study the phenomenon of strong
field gravitational lensing by these black holes by extending the standard
formalism of strong lensing to the non-asymptotically flat dilaton-de Sitter
metric. Expressions for the various lensing quantities are obtained in terms of
the metric coefficients.Comment: 8 pages, RevTex, 1 eps figures; discussion improved; typos corrected;
