The Weld River Group: a major upper Precambrian dolomite sequence in southem Tasmania
The Weld River Group is a folded Precambrian sequence (several kilometres thick and predominantly of dolomite) that crops out in the northern Jubilee region, southern Tasmania. It overlies older predominantly siliciclastic sequences with paraconformity or angular unconformity that does not correspond to any major (cleavage-forming) tectonometamorphic event in the older successions. The group consists of a basal, relatively thin, siliciclastic unit (the Annakananda Formation), locally overlain by an impersistent pebbly mudstone (the Lake Timk Formation), followed by massive, fine-grained dolomite (the Gomorrah Dolomite), then bedded dolomite largely consisting of catagraphic, oolitic grainstone (the Devils Eye Dolomite), and then a second massive dolomite unit (the Styx Dolomite). In faulted contact with these units is a probably younger sequence of massive dolomite intercalated with dolomite-derived mixtite, mudstone and sandstone (the Cotcase Creek Formation). The older Precambrian siliciclastic sequences and the Weld River Group are unconformably overlain by a lithicwacke and conglomerate succession, probably of Middle or Upper Cambrian age. The stratigraphic setting of the group, and some lithologic features, suggest correlation with upper Precambrian dolomitic sequences in northwestern Tasmania (e.g. Black River Dolomite, Success Creek Group) implying that the Penguin Orogeny may be absent or only weakly manifested in the Jubilee region
The stratigraphy of a Late Palaeozoic borehole section at Douglas River, eastern Tasmania: a synthesis of marine macro-invertebrate and palynological data
A section 236.8 m in thickness of Late Palaeozoic (Late Carboniferous-Permian) rocks of the Lower Parmeener Super-Group was encountered in a borehole at Douglas River, eastern Tasmania. Lithological, marine macro-invertebrate and palynological data are documented and collated. The section displays many similarities with sequences elsewhere in eastern and northeastern Tasmania, but is unusual in the development of rocks (including Tasmanites shale) as old as Early Tamarian. This occurrence may indicate a narrow, but significant east-west breaching of the land barrier which persisted throughout the Tamarian over most of eastern and northeastern Tasmania. Acritarch swarms coeval with
sedimentation occur at intervals, whereas other acritarchs may be derived from earlier Palaeozoic rocks. The Tasmanian Late Permian palynofloras lack diversity and resemble those from the Transantarctic Mountains, Antarctica, rather than those from elsewhere in eastern Australia

Spatio-temporal variation in predation by urban domestic cats (Felis catus) and the acceptability of possible management actions in the UK
Urban domestic cat (Felis catus) populations can attain exceedingly high densities and are not limited by natural prey availability. This has generated concerns that they may negatively affect prey populations, leading to calls for management. We enlisted cat-owners to record prey returned home to estimate patterns of predation by free-roaming pets in different localities within the town of Reading, UK and questionnaire surveys were used to quantify attitudes to different possible management strategies. Prey return rates were highly variable: only 20% of cats returned ≥4 dead prey annually. Consequently, approximately 65% of owners received no prey in a given season, but this declined to 22% after eight seasons. The estimated mean predation rate was 18.3 prey cat−1 year−1 but this varied markedly both spatially and temporally: per capita predation rates declined with increasing cat density. Comparisons with estimates of the density of six common bird prey species indicated that cats killed numbers equivalent to adult density on c. 39% of occasions. Population modeling studies suggest that such predation rates could significantly reduce the size of local bird populations for common urban species. Conversely, most urban residents did not consider cat predation to be a significant problem. Collar-mounted anti-predation devices were the only management action acceptable to the majority of urban residents (65%), but were less acceptable to cat-owners because of perceived risks to their pets; only 24% of cats were fitted with such devices. Overall, cat predation did appear to be of sufficient magnitude to affect some prey populations, although further investigation of some key aspects of cat predation is warranted. Management of the predation behavior of urban cat populations in the UK is likely to be challenging and achieving this would require considerable engagement with cat owners
Impact Factor: outdated artefact or stepping-stone to journal certification?
A review of Garfield's journal impact factor and its specific implementation
as the Thomson Reuters Impact Factor reveals several weaknesses in this
commonly-used indicator of journal standing. Key limitations include the
mismatch between citing and cited documents, the deceptive display of three
decimals that belies the real precision, and the absence of confidence
intervals. These are minor issues that are easily amended and should be
corrected, but more substantive improvements are needed. There are indications
that the scientific community seeks and needs better certification of journal
procedures to improve the quality of published science. Comprehensive
certification of editorial and review procedures could help ensure adequate

Unique Neoproterozoic carbon isotope excursions sustained by coupled evaporite dissolution and pyrite burial
The Neoproterozoic era witnessed a succession of biological innovations that culminated in diverse animal body plans and behaviours during the Ediacaran–Cambrian radiations. Intriguingly, this interval is also marked by perturbations to the global carbon cycle, as evidenced by extreme fluctuations in climate and carbon isotopes. The Neoproterozoic isotope record has defied parsimonious explanation because sustained 12C-enrichment (low δ13C) in seawater seems to imply that substantially more oxygen was consumed by organic carbon oxidation than could possibly have been available. We propose a solution to this problem, in which carbon and oxygen cycles can maintain dynamic equilibrium during negative δ13C excursions when surplus oxidant is generated through bacterial reduction of sulfate that originates from evaporite weathering. Coupling of evaporite dissolution with pyrite burial drives a positive feedback loop whereby net oxidation of marine organic carbon can sustain greenhouse forcing of chemical weathering, nutrient input and ocean margin euxinia. Our proposed framework is particularly applicable to the late Ediacaran ‘Shuram’ isotope excursion that directly preceded the emergence of energetic metazoan metabolisms during the Ediacaran–Cambrian transition. Here we show that non-steady-state sulfate dynamics contributed to climate change, episodic ocean oxygenation and opportunistic radiations of aerobic life during the Neoproterozoic era
Utility of the Health of the Nation Outcome Scales (HoNOS) in Predicting Mental Health Service Costs for Patients with Common Mental Health Problems : Historical Cohort Study
BACKGROUND: Few countries have made much progress in implementing transparent and efficient systems for the allocation of mental health care resources. In England there are ongoing efforts by the National Health Service (NHS) to develop mental health 'payment by results' (PbR). The system depends on the ability of patient 'clusters' derived from the Health of the Nation Outcome Scales (HoNOS) to predict costs. We therefore investigated the associations of individual HoNOS items and the Total HoNOS score at baseline with mental health service costs at one year follow-up.METHODS: An historical cohort study using secondary care patient records from the UK financial year 2012-2013. Included were 1,343 patients with 'common mental health problems', represented by ICD-10 disorders between F32-48. Costs were based on patient contacts with community-based and hospital-based mental health services. The costs outcome was transformed into 'high costs' vs 'regular costs' in main analyses.RESULTS: After adjustment for covariates, 11 HoNOS items were not associated with costs. The exception was 'self-injury' with an odds ratio of 1.41 (95% CI 1.10-2.99). Population attributable fractions (PAFs) for the contribution of HoNOS items to high costs ranged from 0.6% (physical illness) to 22.4% (self-injury). After adjustment, the Total HoNOS score was not associated with costs (OR 1.03, 95% CI 0.99-1.07). However, the PAF (33.3%) demonstrated that it might account for a modest proportion of the incidence of high costs.CONCLUSIONS: Our findings provide limited support for the utility of the self-injury item and Total HoNOS score in predicting costs. However, the absence of associations for the remaining HoNOS items indicates that current PbR clusters have minimal ability to predict costs, so potentially contributing to a misallocation of NHS resources across England. The findings may inform the development of mental health payment systems internationally, especially since the vast majority of countries have not progressed past the early stages of this development. Discrepancies between our findings with those from Australia and New Zealand point to the need for further international investigations
Age, anticoagulants, hypertension and cardiovascular genetic traits predict cranial ischaemic complications in patients with giant cell arteritis

Published by BMJ on behalf of EULAR.Objectives: This project aimed to determine whether cranial ischaemic complications at the presentation of giant cell arteritis (GCA) were associated with pre-existing cardiovascular (CV) risk factors, CV disease or genetic risk of CV-related traits. Methods: 1946 GCA patients with clinicodemographic data at GCA presentation were included. Associations between pre-existing CV-related traits (including Polygenic Risk Scores (PRS) for CV traits) and cranial ischaemic complications were tested. A model for cranial ischaemic complications was optimised using an elastic net approach. Positional gene mapping of associated PRS was performed to improve biological understanding. Results: In a sample of 1946 GCA patients (median age=71, 68.7% female), 17% had cranial ischaemic complications at presentation. In univariable analyses, 10 variables were associated with complications (likelihood-ratio test p≤0.05). In multivariable analysis, the two variables with the strongest effects, with or without PRS in the model, were anticoagulant therapy (adjusted OR (95% CI)=0.21 (0.05 to 0.62), p=4.95

710-3, for ≥80 years versus <60 years). In sensitivity analyses omitting anticoagulant therapy from multivariable analysis, age and hypertension were associated with cranial ischaemic complications at presentation (hypertension: adjusted OR (95% CI)=1.35 (1.03 to 1.75), p=0.03). Positional gene mapping of an associated transient ischaemic attack PRS identified TEK, CD96 and MROH9 loci. Conclusion: Age and hypertension were risk factors for cranial ischaemic complications at GCA presentation, but in this dataset, anticoagulation appeared protective. Positional gene mapping suggested a role for immune and coagulation-related pathways in the pathogenesis of complications. Further studies are needed before implementation in clinical practice
GABAergic regulation of cerebellar NG2 cell development is altered in perinatal white matter injury.
Diffuse white matter injury (DWMI), a leading cause of neurodevelopmental disabilities in preterm infants, is characterized by reduced oligodendrocyte formation. NG2-expressing oligodendrocyte precursor cells (NG2 cells) are exposed to various extrinsic regulatory signals, including the neurotransmitter GABA. We investigated GABAergic signaling to cerebellar white matter NG2 cells in a mouse model of DWMI (chronic neonatal hypoxia). We found that hypoxia caused a loss of GABAA receptor-mediated synaptic input to NG2 cells, extensive proliferation of these cells and delayed oligodendrocyte maturation, leading to dysmyelination. Treatment of control mice with a GABAA receptor antagonist or deletion of the chloride-accumulating transporter NKCC1 mimicked the effects of hypoxia. Conversely, blockade of GABA catabolism or GABA uptake reduced NG2 cell numbers and increased the formation of mature oligodendrocytes both in control and hypoxic mice. Our results indicate that GABAergic signaling regulates NG2 cell differentiation and proliferation in vivo, and suggest that its perturbation is a key factor in DWMI
