Genome-enabled phylogeographic investigation of the quarantine pathogen Ralstonia solanacearum race 3 biovar 2 and screening for sources of resistance against its core effectors.
Phylogeographic studies inform about routes of pathogen dissemination and are instrumental for improving import/export controls. Genomes of seventeen isolates of the bacterial wilt and potato brown rot pathogen Ralstonia solanacearum race 3 biovar 2 (R3bv2), a select agent in the USA, were thus analyzed to get insight into the phylogeography of this pathogen. Thirteen of fourteen isolates from Europe, Africa, and Asia were found to belong to a single clonal lineage while isolates from South America were genetically diverse and carried ancestral alleles at the analyzed genomic loci consistent with a South American origin of R3bv2. The R3bv2 isolates share a core repertoire of thirty-one type III-secreted effector genes representing excellent candidates to be targeted with resistance genes in breeding programs to develop durable disease resistance. Towards this goal, 27 R3bv2 effectors were tested in eggplant, tomato, pepper, tobacco, and lettuce for induction of a hypersensitive-like response indicative of recognition by cognate resistance receptors. Fifteen effectors, eight of them core effectors, triggered a response in one or more plant species. These genotypes may harbor resistance genes that could be identified and mapped, cloned and expressed in tomato or potato, for which sources of genetic resistance to R3bv2 are extremely limited.National Science Foundatio
Thermodynamics of a class of non-asymptotically flat black holes in Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton theory
We analyse in detail the thermodynamics in the canonical and grand canonical
ensembles of a class of non-asymptotically flat black holes of the
Einstein-(anti) Maxwell-(anti) Dilaton theory in 4D with spherical symmetry. We
present the first law of thermodynamics, the thermodynamic analysis of the
system through the geometrothermodynamics methods, Weinhold, Ruppeiner,
Liu-Lu-Luo-Shao and the most common, that made by the specific heat. The
geometric methods show a curvature scalar identically zero, which is
incompatible with the results of the analysis made by the non null specific
heat, which shows that the system is thermodynamically interacting, does not
possess extreme case nor phase transition. We also analyse the local and global
stability of the thermodynamic system, and obtain a local and global stability
for the normal case for 0<\gamma<1 and for other values of \gamma, an unstable
system. The solution where \gamma=0 separates the class of locally and globally
stable solutions from the unstable ones.Comment: 18 pages, version accepted for publication in General Relativity and

Logarithmic correction to BH entropy as Noether charge
We consider the role of the type-A trace anomaly in static black hole
solutions to semiclassical Einstein equation in four dimensions. Via Wald's
Noether charge formalism, we compute the contribution to the entropy coming
from the anomaly induced effective action and unveil a logarithmic correction
to the Bekenstein-Hawking area law.
The corrected entropy is given by a seemingly universal formula involving the
coefficient of the type-A trace anomaly, the Euler characteristic of the
horizon and the value at the horizon of the solution to the uniformization
problem for Q-curvature. Two instances are examined in detail: Schwarzschild
and a four-dimensional massless topological black hole. We also find agreement
with the logarithmic correction due to one-loop contribution of conformal
fields in the Schwarzschild background.Comment: 14 pages, JHEP styl
BDDC for nonsymmetric positive definite and symmetric indefinite problems
The balancing domain decomposition methods by constraints are extended to solving both nonsymmetric, positive definite and symmetric, indefinite linear systems. In both cases, certain nonstandard primal constraints are included in the coarse problems of BDDC algorithms to accelerate the convergence. Under the assumption that the subdomain size is small enough, a convergence rate estimate for the GMRES iteration is established that the rate is independent of the number of subdomains and depends only slightly on the subdomain problem size. Numerical experiments for several two-dimensional examples illustrate the fast convergence of the proposed algorithms
The Stokes Phenomenon and Quantum Tunneling for de Sitter Radiation in Nonstationary Coordinates
We study quantum tunneling for the de Sitter radiation in the planar
coordinates and global coordinates, which are nonstationary coordinates and
describe the expanding geometry. Using the phase-integral approximation for the
Hamilton-Jacobi action in the complex plane of time, we obtain the
particle-production rate in both coordinates and derive the additional
sinusoidal factor depending on the dimensionality of spacetime and the quantum
number for spherical harmonics in the global coordinates. This approach
resolves the factor of two problem in the tunneling method.Comment: LaTex 10 pages, no figur
(Extra)Ordinary Gauge/Anomaly Mediation
We study anomaly mediation models with gauge mediation effects from
messengers which have a general renormalizable mass matrix with a
supersymmetry-breaking spurion. Our models lead to a rich structure of
supersymmetry breaking terms in the visible sector. We derive sum rules among
the soft scalar masses for each generation. Our sum rules for the first and
second generations are the same as those in general gauge mediation, but the
sum rule for the third generation is different because of the top Yukawa
coupling. We find the parameter space where the tachyonic slepton problem is
solved. We also explore the case in which gauge mediation causes the
anomalously small gaugino masses. Since anomaly mediation effects on the
gaugino masses exist, we can obtain viable mass spectrum of the visible sector
fields.Comment: 24 pages, 10 figure
Malignancy risk analysis in patients with inadequate fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) of the thyroid
Background
Thyroid fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is the standard diagnostic modality for thyroid nodules. However, it has limitations among which is the incidence of non-diagnostic results (Thy1). Management of cases with repeatedly non-diagnostic FNAC ranges from simple observation to surgical intervention. We aim to evaluate the incidence of malignancy in non-diagnostic FNAC, and the success rate of repeated FNAC. We also aim to evaluate risk factors for malignancy in patients with non-diagnostic FNAC.
Materials and Methods
Retrospective analyses of consecutive cases with thyroid non diagnostic FNAC results were included.
Results
Out of total 1657 thyroid FNAC done during the study period, there were 264 (15.9%) non-diagnostic FNAC on the first attempt. On repeating those, the rate of a non-diagnostic result on second FNAC was 61.8% and on third FNAC was 47.2%. The overall malignancy rate in Thy1 FNAC was 4.5% (42% papillary, 42% follicular and 8% anaplastic), and the yield of malignancy decreased considerably with successive non-diagnostic FNAC. Ultrasound guidance by an experienced head neck radiologist produced the lowest non-diagnostic rate (38%) on repetition compared to US guidance by a generalist radiologist (65%) and by non US guidance (90%).
Conclusions
There is a low risk of malignancy in patients with a non-diagnostic FNAC result, commensurate to the risk of any nodule. The yield of malignancy decreased considerably with successive non-diagnostic FNAC
