    Controlling services in a mobile context-aware infrastructure

    Context-aware application behaviors can be described as logic rules following the Event-Control-Action (ECA) pattern. In this pattern, an Event models an occurrence of interest (e.g., a change in context); Control specifies a condition that must hold prior to the execution of the action; and an Action represents the invocation of arbitrary services. We have defined a Controlling service aiming at facilitating the dynamic configuration of ECA rule specifications by means of a mobile rule engine and a mechanism that distributes context reasoning activities to a network of context processing nodes. In this paper we present a novel context modeling approach that provides application developers and users with more appropriate means to define context information and ECA rules. Our approach makes use of ontologies to model context information and has been developed on top of web services technology

    The evaluation of student-centredness of teaching and learning: a new mixed-methods approach.

    OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to develop and consider the usefulness of a new mixed-methods approach to evaluate the student-centredness of teaching and learning on undergraduate medical courses. An essential paradigm for the evaluation was the coherence between how teachers conceptualise their practice (espoused theories) and their actual practice (theories-in-use). METHODS: The context was a module within an integrated basic sciences course in an undergraduate medical degree programme. The programme had an explicit intention of providing a student-centred curriculum. A content analysis framework based on Weimer's dimensions of student-centred teaching was used to analyze data collected from individual interviews with seven teachers to identify espoused theories and 34h of classroom observations and one student focus group to identify theories-in-use. The interviewees were identified by purposeful sampling. The findings from the three methods were triangulated to evaluate the student-centredness of teaching and learning on the course. RESULTS: Different, but complementary, perspectives of the student-centredness of teaching and learning were identified by each method. The triangulation of the findings revealed coherence between the teachers' espoused theories and theories-in-use. CONCLUSIONS: A mixed-methods approach that combined classroom observations with interviews from a purposeful sample of teachers and students offered a useful evaluation of the extent of student-centredness of teaching and learning of this basic science course. Our case study suggests that this new approach is applicable to other courses in medical education

    Transthyretin binding to A-Beta peptide – Impact on A-Beta fibrillogenesis and toxicity

    AbstractIt has been suggested that transthyretin (TTR) is involved in preventing A-Beta fibrillization in Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Here, we characterized the TTR/A-Beta interaction by competition binding assays. TTR binds to different A-Beta peptide species: soluble (Kd, 28nM), oligomers and fibrils; diverse TTR variants bind differentially to A-Beta. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis demonstrated that TTR is capable of interfering with A-Beta fibrillization by both inhibiting and disrupting fibril formation. Co-incubation of the two molecules resulted in the abolishment of A-Beta toxicity. Our results confirmed TTR as an A-Beta ligand and indicated the inhibition/disruption of A-Beta fibrils as a possible mechanism underlying the protective role of TTR in AD

    Contribution of limbs’ actions to the four competitive swimming strokes: a nonlinear approach

    The aim of our study was to assess the effect of the limbs’ actions on the nonlinear properties of the four competitive swimming strokes. Forty-nine swimmers performed all-out sprints at front-crawl, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly, each one at full stroke (FS), only the arms’ stroke (AS), and only leg kicking (LK), in a total of 12 bouts, 6 per day. A speedo-meter cable was attached to the swimmer’s hip, to collect the speed-time raw data (f = 50Hz). Velocity, speed fluctuation, sample entropy and fractal dimension were derived from the speed-time series. Significant and moderate-strong effects were noted for both stroke and condition in all variables in the study (p ≤ 0.001; 0,560<η2 < 0,952). The four competitive strokes and their three conditions exhibited nonlinear properties. The swimming pattern was less complex and more predictable for LK in comparison to AS and FS.     Phenolic Acids, Phenolic Aldehydes and Furanic Derivatives in Oak Chips: American vs. French Oaks

    Phenolic acids (gallic, vanillic, syringic and ellagic acids), phenolic aldehydes (vanillin, syringaldehyde,coniferaldehyde and sinapaldehyde) and furanic derivatives (furfural, 5-methylfurfural and5-hydroxymethylfurfural) were quantified in commercial American and French oak chips. Chips withdifferent sizes and toast degrees were used. Compounds were extracted directly from the wood samples inorder to determine possible differences among woods as well as toast degree. Likewise, the compounds wereextracted from a synthetic wine solution to which the chip woods had been added. The results show thatFrench wood chips are generally richer than the American ones. The total amount of phenolic compoundsincreases with toasting level, with the non-toasted chips being the poorest ones. The degree of extractionfrom the synthetic wine solution seems to be related to the shape of the chips, rather than to the wood typeor toast degree

    Biomechanical responses to water fitness programmes: a narrative review

    In the past years, there was an increasing interest in the biomechanical responses in water fitness sessions. The present review consolidates the current “state-of-art” on the biomechanical responses in water fitness programmes. The literature was searched and screened studies on: (i) healthy subjects; and (ii) water fitness sessions and programmes reporting physical condition outcomes. A total of 36 studies met the inclusion criteria and categorized into four categories: (i) kinematics (n = 5); (ii) ground reaction force (n = 10); (iii) neuromuscular (n = 8); and (iv) strength (n = 14). There was a larger amount of evidence on strength, whereas some gaps in the body of knowledge still persist in the remaining categories. The existent studies cover a large range of age brackets (from young adults to the elderly). Women were recruited more often than men to be part of the studies. The effect of music cadence, body segments, exercise type (e.g., alternated or simultaneous), water depth, resistance equipment, and training protocols were the main topics under research.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
