Two spider species of the liocranid genus Mesiotelus Simon, 1897 new to the fauna of Turkey are recorded on the basis of female specimens: M. caucasicus Zamani et Marusik, 2021 from Hakkari Province in the Eastern Anatolia and M. deltshevi Naumova, 2020 from Diyarbakır Province in the Southeast Anatolia. The characteristic features are illustarted. In addition, M. scopensis Drensky, 1935 and M. tenuissimus (L. Koch, 1866), two other species found in Turkey, are illustrated. The distribution records of all of these species in Turkey are mapped. With these new records, the number of species belonging to the family Liocranidae in Turkey has increased to 18

Authoritarian Neoliberalism and Democratic Backsliding in Turkey: Beyond the Narratives of Progress

Unpacking the core themes that are discussed in this collection, this article both offers a research agenda to re-analyse Turkey’s ‘authoritarian turn’ and mounts a methodological challenge to the conceptual frameworks that reinforce a strict analytical separation between the ‘economic’ and the ‘political’ factors. The paper problematises the temporal break in scholarly analyses of the AKP period and rejects the argument that the party’s methods of governance have shifted from an earlier ‘democratic’ model – defined by ‘hegemony’ – to an emergent ‘authoritarian’ one. In contrast, by retracing the mechanisms of the state-led reproduction of neoliberalism since 2003, the paper demonstrates that the party’s earlier ‘hegemonic’ activities were also shaped by authoritarian tendencies which manifested at various levels of governance

Investigation of the bactericidal effects of vancomycin and quinupristin/dalfopristin on Staphylococcus aureus isolates

    No full text
The present study aimed to determine the correlation between the bactericidal activity of vancomycin and quinupristin/dalfopristin (Q/D) on Staphylococcus aureus isolates and their minimal inhibition concentrations. The in-vitro susceptibilities of the 99 S. aureus isolates to vancomycin and Q/D were investigated by agar dilution. Thirty methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) and 30 methicillin-susceptible S. aureus (MSSA) vancomycin and Q/D susceptible isolates were involved in time-kill studies. While both MRSA and MSSA isolates were susceptible to vancomycin, 96% of both isolates were determined as susceptible to Q/D. In the time-kill test, after 6 h of incubation vancomycin exhibited a bactericidal activity of 90% on MRSA and 100% on MSSA isolates. On the other hand, in the same incubation period Q/D was 47% and 93% bactericidal for MRSA and MSSA isolates, respectively. After 24 h of incubation, while vancomycin was bactericidal for all MRSA and MSSA isolates, Q/D exhibited a bactericidal activity of 93% on MRSA isolates and 97% on MSSA isolates

Aripiprazole as a treatment option for delusional parasitosis: case series of 8 patients

OBJECTIVE: Delusional parasitosis (DP), also known as Ekbom’s Syndrome, is a rare, generally monosymptomatic disorder that characterizes with the fixed belief of being infected by parasites without any evidence of medical or microbiological proof. These patients are examined in dermatology and infection clinics with symptoms and signs of pruritus, skin and subcutaneous scars secondary to itching. Primary DP is diagnosed when no etiological factor is detected while secondary DP arises from underlying physical or mental disorder. Formerly, pimozide was the commonly preferred choice of treatment with cases of DP. However, there is growing evidence that second-generation antipsychotics and antidepressants can be used in the treatment of DP. In this study, the usage of aripiprazole in the treatment of DP cases is presented. METHODS: 8 patients with the diagnosis of primary DP were evaluated in terms of demographic data, clinical variables and responses to treatment. A psychiatric diagnosis was made based on a clinical interview performed using Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis I Disorders (SCID-I) SCID-I. The patients were followed for six months. Three patients were female, five patients were male. The average age of the patients was 57.5. Four patients had essential hypertension as comorbidity. The duration of the symptoms ranged from 6 to 48 months with an average of 24.75 months. All of our 8 cases were consulted by the dermatology department. The patients were performed Hamilton Depression Scale (HDS) and Mini-Mental Status Examination (MMSE). Eight patients were treated with aripiprazole 10 or 15 mg/day, and no dose alteration was made. RESULTS: From the patients who were treated with aripiprazole, seven (87.5%) patients had complete remission after three months, eight (100%) patients achieved complete remission after six months. DISCUSSION: The earliest drug choice for patients with DP was pimozide, but because of the extrapyramidal side effects and cardiac side effects like QTc prolongation, second-generation antipsychotics are being investigated for treatment. Various researches are available related to the usage of second-generation antipsychotics like risperidone, olanzapine, paliperidone, ziprasidone, quetiapine, and aripiprazole in the cases with DP. This study shows that aripiprazole can be a successful treatment choice for DP, but further studies are needed for this topic

Atherosclerosis and acetylsalicylic acid are independent risk factors for hemorrhage in patients with gastric or duodenal ulcer [Ateroskleroz ve asetilsalisilik asit gastrik ve duodenal ülser kanaması için bagımsız risk faktörleridir]

PubMedID: 21220246Objective: Risk factors for hemorrhage due to gastric and/or duodenal ulcer in patients diagnosed by upper gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy were investigated in the present study. Methods: Medical records of 350 patients (226 males, 124 females) diagnosed as duodenal or gastric ulcers by GI endoscopy in the gastroenterology clinic were scanned retrospectively. Upper GI hemorrhage was detected in 92 patients by upper endoscopic examination. The medical history of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) usage and the presence of coronary artery disease (CAD) were investigated in all patients with or without hemorrhage. Results were evaluated by Chi-square test and logistic regression analysis. Results: The mean age of the patients was 50.4±15.7 years (range: 25 to 82 years). Hemorrhage due to gastric or duodenal ulcer was identified in 92 patients (26%). Mean age was 64.6±11.4 years in patients with hemorrhage and 45.7±13.9 years in patients without hemorrhage. ASA usage was more common than NSAID in patients with ulcer hemorrhage (NSAID usage n=35 (40%); ASA usage n=51 (60%); p=0.035). Hemorrhage was reported in 20% of the females and in 28% of the males who have ulcer (p=0.055). Risk factors for hemorrhage were CAD (OR:24.75, 95% CI=1.6- 96.7, p=0.001), ASA usage (OR:9.76, 95% CI=2.1-37.5, p=0.021), NSAID usage (OR: 4.72, 95%CI=1.1-16.5, p=0.032), age (OR: 11.59, 95% CI= 2.7-12.1, p=0.001), and male gender (OR: 2.56, 95% CI= 0.8, 9.6, p=0.052). Conclusion: Advanced age, atherosclerosis, male gender and NSAID administration (particularly aspirin) are the major risk factors of upper GI hemorrhage in patients with gastric and/or duodenal ulcer. © 2011 by AVES Yayincilik Ltd

The occurrence of P fimbriae in a total of 222 uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) strains was investigated. Out of the total, 31 (14%) were P fimbriated. Of 24 pyelonephritogenic E. coli strains, three (13%) with P fimbriae occurred in children with clinical pyelonephritis, and of 198 E. coli strains 29 (15%) occurred in children with cystitis. Prevalence of P fimbriae of E. coli strains was found to be quite similar in patients with cystitis and pyelonephritis

Designing cloud data warehouses using multiobjective evolutionary algorithms

    No full text
DataBase as a Service (DBaaS) providers need to improve their existing capabilities in data management and balance the efficient usage of virtual resources to multi-users with varying needs. However, there is still no existing method that concerns both with the optimization of the total ownership price and the performance of the queries of a Cloud data warehouse by taking into account the alternative virtual resource allocation and query execution plans. Our proposed method tunes the virtual resources of a Cloud to a data warehouse system, whereas most of the previous studies used to tune the database/queries to a given static resource setting. We solve this important problem with an exact Branch and Bound algorithm and a robust Multiobjective Genetic Algorithm. Finally, through several experiments we conclude remarkable findings of the algorithms we propose
