Supersymmetric Charged Clouds in AdS_5
We consider supersymmetric holographic flows that involve background gauge
fields dual to chemical potentials in the boundary field theory. We use a
consistent truncation of gauged N=8 supergravity in five dimensions and we give
a complete analysis of the supersymmetry conditions for a large family of
flows. We examine how the well-known supersymmetric flow between two fixed
points is modified by the presence of the chemical potentials and this yields a
new, completely smooth, solution that interpolates between two global AdS
spaces of different radii and with different values of the chemical potential.
We also examine some black-hole-like singular flows and a new
non-supersymmetric black hole solution. We comment on the interpretation of our
new solutions in terms of giant gravitons and discuss the implications of our

On the coset duals of extended higher spin theories
We study the holographic duality between the M x M matrix extension of
Vasiliev higher spin theories on AdS3 and the large N limit of SU(N+M)/SU(N) x
U(1) type cosets. We present a simplified proof for the agreement of the
spectra and clarify the relation between this duality and the version in which

Consistent truncation of d = 11 supergravity on AdS_4 x S^7
We study the system of equations derived twenty five years ago by B. de Wit
and the first author [Nucl. Phys. B281 (1987) 211] as conditions for the
consistent truncation of eleven-dimensional supergravity on AdS_4 x S^7 to
gauged N = 8 supergravity in four dimensions. By exploiting the E_7(7)
symmetry, we determine the most general solution to this system at each point
on the coset space E_7(7)/SU(8). We show that invariants of the general
solution are given by the fluxes in eleven-dimensional supergravity. This
allows us to both clarify the explicit non-linear ansatze for the fluxes given
previously and to fill a gap in the original proof of the consistent

Seven-dimensional inhomogeneous Sasaki-Einstein manifolds
present a challenging example of AdS/CFT correspondence. At present, their
field theory duals for base are proposed only within a
restricted range as quiver Chern-Simons-matter
theories with gauge group, nine bifundamental
chiral multiplets interacting through a cubic superpotential. To further
elucidate this correspondence, we use particle approximation both at classical
and quantum level. We setup a concrete AdS/CFT mapping of conserved quantities
using geodesic motions, and turn to solutions of scalar Laplace equation in
. The eigenmodes also provide an interesting subset of Kaluza-Klein
spectrum for supergravity in , and are dual
to protected operators written in terms of matter multiplets in the dual

Strain engineering and one-dimensional organization of metal-insulator domains in single-crystal VO2 beams
Spatial phase inhomogeneity at the nano- to microscale is widely observed in
strongly-correlated electron materials. The underlying mechanism and
possibility of artificially controlling the phase inhomogeneity are still open
questions of critical importance for both the phase transition physics and
device applications. Lattice strain has been shown to cause the coexistence of
metallic and insulating phases in the Mott insulator VO2. By continuously
tuning strain over a wide range in single-crystal VO2 micro- and nanobeams,
here we demonstrate the nucleation and manipulation of one-dimensionally
ordered metal-insulator domain arrays along the beams. Mott transition is
achieved in these beams at room temperature by active control of strain. The
ability to engineer phase inhomogeneity with strain lends insight into
correlated electron materials in general, and opens opportunities for designing
and controlling the phase inhomogeneity of correlated electron materials for

Bee products prevent VEGF-induced angiogenesis in human umbilical vein endothelial cells
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is a key regulator of pathogenic angiogenesis in diseases such as cancer and diabetic retinopathy. Bee products [royal jelly (RJ), bee pollen, and Chinese red propolis] from the honeybee, <it>Apis mellifera</it>, have been used as traditional health foods for centuries. The aim of this study was to investigate the anti-angiogenic effects of bee products using human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs).</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>In an <it>in vitro </it>tube formation assay, HUVECs and fibroblast cells were incubated for 14 days with VEGF and various concentrations of bee products [RJ, ethanol extract of bee pollen, ethanol extract of Chinese red propolis and its constituent, caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE)]. To clarify the mechanism of <it>in vitro </it>angiogenesis, HUVEC proliferation and migration were induced by VEGF with or without various concentrations of RJ, bee pollen, Chinese red propolis, and CAPE.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>RJ, bee pollen, Chinese red propolis, and CAPE significantly suppressed VEGF-induced <it>in vitro </it>tube formation in the descending order: CAPE > Chinese red propolis >> bee pollen > RJ. RJ and Chinese red propolis suppressed both VEGF-induced HUVEC proliferation and migration. In contrast, bee pollen and CAPE suppressed only the proliferation.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Among the bee products, Chinese red propolis and CAPE in particular showed strong suppressive effects against VEGF-induced angiogenesis. These findings indicate that Chinese red propolis and CAPE may have potential as preventive and therapeutic agents against angiogenesis-related human diseases.</p
Liposarcoma: exploration of clinical prognostic factors for risk based stratification of therapy
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Prognosis and optimal treatment strategies of liposarcoma have not been fully defined. The purpose of this study is to define the distinctive clinical features of liposarcomas by assessing prognostic factors.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Between January 1995 and May 2008, 94 liposarcoma patients who underwent surgical resection with curative intent were reviewed.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Fifty patients (53.2%) presented with well differentiated, 22 (23.4%) myxoid, 15 (16.0%) dedifferentiated, 5 (5.3%) round cell, and 2 (2.1%) pleomorphic histology. With the median 14 cm sized of tumor burden, about half of the cases were located in the retroperitoneum (46.8%). Seventy two (76.6%) patients remained alive with 78.1%, and 67.5% of the 5- and 10-year overall survival (OS) rates, respectively. Low grade liposarcoma (well differentiated and myxoid) had a significantly prolonged OS and disease free survival (DFS) with adjuvant radiotherapy when compared with those without adjuvant radiotherapy (5-year OS, 100% vs 66.3%, P = 0.03; 1-year DFS, 92.9% <it>vs </it>50.0%, respectively, P = 0.04). Independent prognostic factors for OS were histologic variant (P = 0.001; HR, 5.1; 95% CI, 2.0 – 12.9), and margin status (P = 0.005; HR, 4.1; 95% CI, 1.6–10.5). We identified three different risk groups: group 1 (n = 66), no adverse factors; group 2, one or two adverse factors (n = 28). The 5-year OS rate for group 1, and 2 were 91.9%, 45.5%, respectively.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The histologic subtype, and margin status were independently associated with OS, and adjuvant radiotherapy seems to confer survival benefit in low grade tumors. Our prognostic model for primary liposarcoma demonstrated distinct three groups of patients with good prognostic discrimination.</p

The mu - e Conversion in Nuclei, mu --> e gamma, mu --> 3e Decays and TeV Scale See-Saw Scenarios of Neutrino Mass Generation
We perform a detailed analysis of lepton flavour violation (LFV) within
minimal see-saw type extensions of the Standard Model (SM), which give a viable
mechanism of neutrino mass generation and provide new particle content at the
electroweak scale. We focus, mainly, on predictions and constraints set on each
scenario from mu --> e gamma, mu --> 3e and mu - e conversion in the nuclei. In
this class of models, the flavour structure of the Yukawa couplings between the
additional scalar and fermion representations and the SM leptons is highly
constrained by neutrino oscillation measurements. In particular, we show that
in some regions of the parameters space of type I and type II see-saw models,
the Dirac and Majorana phases of the neutrino mixing matrix, the ordering and
hierarchy of the active neutrino mass spectrum as well as the value of the
reactor mixing angle theta_{13} may considerably affect the size of the LFV
observables. The interplay of the latter clearly allows to discriminate among
