    A Survey, Classification and Critical Review of Light-Emitting Diode Drivers

    Based on a survey on over 1400 commercial LED drivers and a literature review, a range of LED driver topologies are classified according to their applications, power ratings, performance and their energy storage and regulatory requirements. Both passive and active LED drivers are included in the review and their advantages and disadvantages are discussed. This paper also presents an overall view on the technical and cost aspects of the LED technology, which is useful to both researchers and engineers in the lighting industry. Some general guidelines for selecting driver topologies are included to aid design engineers to make appropriate choices.published_or_final_versio

    A design methodology for smart LED lighting systems powered by weakly regulated renewable power grids

    The increasing use of intermittent renewable energy sources to decarbonize electric power generation is expected to introduce dynamic instability to the mains. This situation is of particular concern for mini-grids or isolated grids in which wind and/or solar power sources are the dominant or the sole power sources. In this paper, we utilize the photo-electro-thermal theory to develop a design methodology for LED lighting systems for weakly regulated voltage sources, with the objectives of minimizing the fluctuation of the human luminous perception and adopting reliable LED driver with long lifetime and robustness against extreme weather conditions. The proposed LED system, practically verified in a 10 kVA small power grid driven by an ac voltage source and a wind energy simulator, can be considered as a smart load with its load demand following the power generation. A typical swing of 40 V in the mains will cause only 15% actual light variation in a 132 W LED system when compared with 40% change in 150 W high-pressure-sodium lamp system. The design methodology enables future large-scale LED systems to be designed as a new generation of smart loads that can adapt to the voltage and power fluctuations arising from the intermittent nature of renewable energy sources. © 2011 IEEE.published_or_final_versio

In this paper we study some basic properties of this norm and give a characterization of the extreme points of its closed unit ball.     Parallel distinguishability of quantum operations

    © 2016 IEEE. We find that the perfect distinguishability of two quantum operations by a parallel scheme depends only on an operator subspace generated from their Choi-Kraus operators. We further show that any operator subspace can be obtained from two quantum operations in such a way. This connection enables us to study the parallel distinguishability of operator subspaces directly without explicitly referring to the underlining quantum operations. We obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for the parallel distinguishability of an operator subspace that is either one-dimensional or Hermitian. In both cases the condition is equivalent to the non-existence of positive definite operator in the subspace, and an optimal discrimination protocol is obtained. Finally, we provide more examples to show that the non-existence of positive definite operator is sufficient for many other cases, but in general it is only a necessary condition

    Numerical ranges of an operator on an indefinite inner product space

    For n x n complex matrices A and an n x n Hermitian matrix S, we consider the S-numerical range of A and the positive S-numerical range of A defined by WS(A) = {〈Av, v〉S/〈v, v〉S : v ∈ ℂn, 〈v, v〉S ≠ 0} and W S + (A) = {〈Av, v〉S : v ∈ ℂn, 〈v, v〉S = 1}, respectively, where 〈u, v〉S = v*Su. These sets generalize the classical numerical range, and they are closely related to the joint numerical range of three Hermitian forms and the cone generated by it. Using some theory of the joint numerical range we can give a detailed description of WS(A) and WS + (A) for arbitrary Hermitian matrices S. In particular, it is shown that WS + (A) is always convex and WS(A) is always p-convex for all S. Similar results are obtained for the sets VS(A) = {〈Av, v〉/〈Sv, v〉: v ∈ ℂn, 〈Sv, v〉 ≠ 0}, VS + (A) = {〈Av, v〉: v ∈ ℂn, 〈Sv, v〉 = 1}, where 〈u, v〉 = v* u. Furthermore, we characterize those linear operators preserving WS(A), WS + (A), V S(A), or VS + (A). Possible generalizations of our results, including their extensions to bounded linear operators on an infinite dimensional Hilbert or Krein space, are discussed.published_or_final_versio

    Bistability in online social networks

This work studies the dynamic evolvement of online social networks by a simple stochastic model that captures the inter-dependent social interactions.
