A hadron model with breaking of spatial homogeneity of vacuum
A possible breaking of spatial homogeneity of vacuum due to the interaction
between quark and Bose-field is analyzed. It is shown that in this case quark
can be in a localized state (like wave packet). Energetic conditions for such a
spontaneous symmetry breaking are found in suggested model. Possible
consequences of such symmetry breaking, in particular, the origin of deep
inelastic processes and quark confinement phenomenon are discussed.Comment: 4 page
Stochastics theory of log-periodic patterns
We introduce an analytical model based on birth-death clustering processes to
help understanding the empirical log-periodic corrections to power-law scaling
and the finite-time singularity as reported in several domains including
rupture, earthquakes, world population and financial systems. In our
stochastics theory log-periodicities are a consequence of transient clusters
induced by an entropy-like term that may reflect the amount of cooperative
information carried by the state of a large system of different species. The
clustering completion rates for the system are assumed to be given by a simple
linear death process. The singularity at t_{o} is derived in terms of
birth-death clustering coefficients.Comment: LaTeX, 1 ps figure - To appear J. Phys. A: Math & Ge
Ecological selection pressures for C4 photosynthesis in the grasses
Grasses using the C4 photosynthetic pathway dominate grasslands and savannahs of warm regions, and account for half of the species in this ecologically and economically important plant family. The C4 pathway increases the potential for high rates of photosynthesis, particularly at high irradiance, and raises water-use efficiency compared with the C3 type. It is therefore classically viewed as an adaptation to open, arid conditions. Here, we test this adaptive hypothesis using the comparative method, analysing habitat data for 117 genera of grasses, representing 15 C4 lineages. The evidence from our three complementary analyses is consistent with the hypothesis that evolutionary selection for C4 photosynthesis requires open environments, but we find an equal likelihood of C4 evolutionary origins in mesic, arid and saline habitats. However, once the pathway has arisen, evolutionary transitions into arid habitats occur at higher rates in C4 than C3 clades. Extant C4 genera therefore occupy a wider range of drier habitats than their C3 counterparts because the C4 pathway represents a pre-adaptation to arid conditions. Our analyses warn against evolutionary inferences based solely upon the high occurrence of extant C4 species in dry habitats, and provide a novel interpretation of this classic ecological association
Modeling the Location of the Forest Line in Northeast European Russia with Remotely Sensed Vegetation and GIS-Based Climate and Terrain Data
GIS-based data sets were used to analyze the structure of the forest line at the landscape level in the lowlands of the Usa River Basin, in northeast European Russia. Vegetation zones in the area range from taiga in the south to forest-tundra and tundra in the north. We constructed logistic regression models to predict forest location at spatial scales varying from 1 à 1 km to 25 à 25 km grid cells. Forest location was explained by July mean temperature, ground temperature (permafrost), yearly minimum temperature, and a Topographic Wetness Index (soil moisture conditions). According to the models, the forest line follows the +13.9°C mean July temperature isoline, whereas in other parts of the Arctic it usually is located between +10 to +12°C. It is hypothesized that the anomalously high temperature isoline for the forest line in Northeast European Russia is due to the inability of local ecotypes of spruce to grow on permafrost terrain. Observed patterns depend on spatial scale, as the relative significance of the explanatory variables varies between models implemented at different scales. Developed models indicate that with climate warming of 3°C by the end of the 21st century temperature would not limit forest advance anywhere in our study area
Searches for violation of fundamental time reversal and space reflection symmetries in solid state experiments
The electric dipole moment (EDM) of a particle violates both time reversal
(T) and space reflection (P) symmetries. There have been recent suggestions for
searches of the electron EDM using solid state experiments [1,2]. These
experiments could improve the sensitivity compared to present atomic and
molecular experiments by several orders of magnitude. In the present paper we
calculate the expected effect. We also suggest that this kind of experiment is
sensitive to T,P-violation in nuclear forces and calculate effects caused by
the nuclear Schiff moment.
The compounds under consideration contain magnetic Gd ions and oxygen
O ions. We demonstrate that the main mechanism for the T,P-odd effects
is related to the penetration of the Oxygen 2p-electrons to the Gd core. All
the effects are related to the deformation of the crystal lattice.Comment: 13 pages, 6 figure
