    Modeling of secondary organic aerosol yields from laboratory chamber data

    Laboratory chamber data serve as the basis for constraining models of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation. Current models fall into three categories: empirical two-product (Odum), product-specific, and volatility basis set. The product-specific and volatility basis set models are applied here to represent laboratory data on the ozonolysis of α-pinene under dry, dark, and low-NOx conditions in the presence of ammonium sulfate seed aerosol. Using five major identified products, the model is fit to the chamber data. From the optimal fitting, SOA oxygen-to-carbon (O/C) and hydrogen-to-carbon (H/C) ratios are modeled. The discrepancy between measured H/C ratios and those based on the oxidation products used in the model fitting suggests the potential importance of particle-phase reactions. Data fitting is also carried out using the volatility basis set, wherein oxidation products are parsed into volatility bins. The product-specific model is most likely hindered by lack of explicit inclusion of particle-phase accretion compounds. While prospects for identification of the majority of SOA products for major volatile organic compounds (VOCs) classes remain promising, for the near future empirical product or volatility basis set models remain the approaches of choice

    Generalization of the minority game to more than one market is considered. At each time step every agent chooses one of its strategies and acts on the market related to this strategy. If the payoff function allows for strong fluctuation of utility then market occupancies become inhomogeneous with preference given to this market where the fluctuation occured first. There exists a critical size of agent population above which agents on bigger market behave collectively.     Quark Loop Contributions to Neutron, Deuteron, and Mercury EDMs from Supersymmetry without R parity

    We present a detailed analysis of the neutron, deuteron and mercury electric dipole moment from supersymmetry without R parity, focusing on the quark-scalar loop contributions. Being proportional to top Yukawa and top mass, such contributions are often large. Analytical expressions illustrating the explicit role of the R-parity violating parameters are given following perturbative diagonalization of mass-squared matrices for the scalars. Dominant contributions come from the combinations Biλij1B_i \lambda^{\prime}_{ij1} for which we obtain robust bounds. It turns out that neutron and deuteron EDMs receive much stronger contributions than mercury EDM and any null result at the future deuteron EDM experiment or Los Alamos neutron EDM experiment can lead to extra-ordinary constraints on RPV parameter space. Even if R-parity violating couplings are real, CKM phase does induce RPV contribution and for some cases such a contribution is as strong as contribution from phases in the R-parity violating couplings.Hence, we have bounds directly on Biλij1|B_i \lambda^{\prime}_{ij1}| even if the RPV parameters are all real. Interestingly, even if slepton mass and/or μ0\mu_0 is as high as 1 TeV, it still leads to neutron EDM that is an order of magnitude larger than the sensitivity at Los Alamos experiment. Since the results are not much sensitive to tanβ\tan \beta, our constraints will survive even if other observables tighten the constraints on tanβ\tan \beta.Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review

    Competition of As and other Group 15 elements for surface binding sites of an extremophilic Acidomyces acidophilus isolated from a historical tin mining site

    An arsenic-resistant fungal strain, designated WKC-1, was isolated from a waste roaster pile in a historical tin mine in Cornwall, UK and successfully identified to be Acidomyces acidophilus using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight/time-of-flight tandem mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF/TOF MS) proteomic-based biotyping approach. WKC-1 showed considerable resistance to As5+ and Sb5+ where the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) were 22500 mg L-1 and 100 mg L-1 respectively on Czapex-Dox Agar (CDA) medium; it was substantially more resistant to As5+ than the reference strains CBS 335.97 and CCF 4251. In a modified CDA medium containing 0.02 mg L-1 phosphate, WKC-1 was able to remove 70.30 % of As5+ (100 mg L-1). Sorption experiment showed that the maximum capacity of As5+ uptake was 170.82 mg g-1 dry biomass as predicted by the Langmuir model. The presence of Sb5+ reduced the As5+ uptake by nearly 40%. Based on the Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) analysis, we propose that Sb is competing with As for these sorption sites: OH, NH, CH, SO3 and PO4 on the fungal cell surface. To our knowledge, this is the first report on the impact of other Group 15 elements on the biosorption of As5+ in Acidomyces acidophilus

    Investigating arsenic resistance in fungi from tin-mining soil and the possible interaction between arsenic and tin/antimony

    There is an increasing interest in the study of fungi that inhabit extreme environments that can provide new biotechnological applications in treating contaminated land. Fungi are versatile biosorbents as they can tolerate extreme levels of metal concentration, nutrient availability, pH and temperature (Gadd, 2009). In this work, heavy metals contaminated soil was collected from Geevor Tin Mine in Penzance, Cornwall. Arsenic and antimony were found in high concentration of 18970 ± 227.0 mg/kg and 196.57 ± 1.91 mg/kg respectively in an extremely acidic soil pH of 1.13. Acidomyces acidophilus strain shows promise in tolerating elevated levels of As (>20,000 mg/L) and Sb (>300 mg/L)

    Piezoelectric copolymer hydrophones for ultrasonic field characterization

    Hydrophones to be used in the characterization of medical ultrasonic transducers have been fabricated using a new polyvinylidene fluoride/trifluoroethylene (VF2/VF3) copolymer. The copolymer has an advantage over VF2 in that it does not require prestretching before poling. Thin copolymer films can be cast from solution and then poled using the corona discharge method. As there is a need for small‐diameter hydrophones to provide good spatial resolution in measuring highly focused ultrasonic beams, hydrophones with diameter as small as 0.1 mm have been made. Both needle‐type and line hydrophones have been tested and their performance reported. In the case of line hydrophones, the output signal is proportional to the line integral of the acoustic pressure and a computer tomographic technique has been used to reconstruct the beam profiles

    Fos co-operation with PTEN loss elicits keratoacanthoma not carcinoma due to p53/p21<sup>WAF</sup>-induced differentiation triggered by GSK3b inactivation and reduced AKT activity

    To investigate gene synergism in multistage skin carcinogenesis, the RU486-inducible cre/lox system was employed to ablate PTEN function [K14.cre/D5PTENflx] in mouse epidermis expressing activated v-fos [HK1.fos]. RU486-treated HK1.fos/D5PTENflx mice exhibited hyperplasia, hyperkeratosis and tumours that progressed to highly differentiated keratoacanthomas rather than carcinomas, due to re-expression of high p53 and p21WAF levels. Despite elevated MAP kinase activity, cyclin D1/E2 over expression and increased AKT activity forming areas of highly proliferative, papillomatous keratinocytes, increasing levels of GSK3b inactivation exceeded a threshold that induced p53/p21WAF expression to halt proliferation and accelerate differentiation, giving the hallmark keratosis of keratoacanthomas. A pivotal facet to this GSK3b-triggered mechanism centred on increasing p53 expression in basal layer keratinocytes. This reduced activated AKT expression and released inhibition of p21WAF, which accelerated keratinocyte differentiation, as indicated by unique basal layer expression of differentiation-specific keratin K1, alongside premature filaggrin and loricrin expression. Thus, fos synergism with PTEN loss elicited a benign tumour context where GSK3b-induced, p53/p21WAF expression continually switched AKT-associated proliferation into one of differentiation, preventing further progression. This putative compensatory mechanism required the critical availability of normal p53 and/or p21WAF otherwise deregulated fos, Akt and GSK3b associate with malignant progression

    Low Temperature Susceptibility of the Noncentrosymmetric Superconductor CePt_3Si

    We report ac susceptibility measurements of polycrystalline CePt_3Si down to 60 mK and in applied fields up to 9 T. In zero field, a full Meissner state emerges at temperatures T/Tc < 0.3, where Tc=0.65 K is the onset transition temperature. Though transport measurements show a relatively high upper critical field Bc2 ~ 4-5 T, the low temperature susceptibility, \chi', is quite fragile to applied field, with \chi' diminishing rapidly in fields of a few kG. Interestingly, the field dependence of \chi' is well described by the power law, 4\pi\chi'=(B/B_c)^{1/2}, where Bc is the field at which the onset of resistance is observed in transport measurements.Comment: 5 figure
