Från shopping till sanningsserum. En typologi över förutsägelser
The article presents a typology of forecasts, i.e. statements on future events or states. It has two dimensions, truth claim and explanatory claim; each dimension has two values, making the claim or not making the claim. The four outcomes are then: Forecasts which make both truth claims and explanatory claims (predictions); which make truth claims, but not ex¬planatory claims (prognoses); which make explanatory claims, but not truth claims (science fiction); and which make neither truth claims nor explana¬tory claims (utopias or dystopias). We regard each outcome as an ideal type, against which forecasts can be measured. We illustrate the use of the typol¬ogy by presenting a Swedish example of each outcome. The prediction is Dahlbom’s The future of Sweden (Sveriges framtid), the prognosis is Wahl¬ström’s After the acid test (Efter stålbadet), the science fiction contribution is Martinson’s Aniara, and the dystopia is Boye’s Kallocain.typology of forecasts; forecasts
Modeling of Hydrogen Storage Materials: A Reactive Force Field for NaH
Parameterization of a reactive force field for NaH is done using ab initio derived data. The parameterized force field(ReaxFFNaH) is used to study the dynamics governing hydrogen desorption in NaH. During the abstraction process of surface molecular hydrogen charge transfer is found to be well described by the parameterized force field. To gain more insight into the mechanism governing structural transformation of NaH during thermal decomposition a heating run in a molecular dynamics simulation is done. The result shows that a clear signature of hydrogen desorption is the fall in potential energy surface during heating
Stuck in the Adoption Funnel: The Effect of Interruptions in the Adoption Process on Usage
Many firms have introduced Internet-based customer self-service applications such as online payments or brokerage services. Despite high initial sign-up rates, not all customers actually shift their dealings online. We investigate whether the multistage nature of the adoption process (an “adoption funnel”) for such technologies can explain this low take-up. We use exogenous variation in events that possibly interrupt adoption, in the form of vacations and public holidays in different German states, to identify the effect on regular usage of being interrupted earlier in the adoption process. We find that interruptions in the early stages of the adoption process reduce a customer's probability of using the technology regularly. Our results suggest significant cost-saving opportunities from eliminating interruptions in the adoption funnel.NET InstituteLondon Business School. Characterization of Sleep Stages by Correlations of Heartbeat Increments
We study correlation properties of the magnitude and the sign of the
increments in the time intervals between successive heartbeats during light
sleep, deep sleep, and REM sleep using the detrended fluctuation analysis
method. We find short-range anticorrelations in the sign time series, which are
strong during deep sleep, weaker during light sleep and even weaker during REM
sleep. In contrast, we find long-range positive correlations in the magnitude
time series, which are strong during REM sleep and weaker during light sleep.
We observe uncorrelated behavior for the magnitude during deep sleep. Since the
magnitude series relates to the nonlinear properties of the original time
series, while the signs series relates to the linear properties, our findings
suggest that the nonlinear properties of the heartbeat dynamics are more
pronounced during REM sleep. Thus, the sign and the magnitude series provide
information which is useful in distinguishing between the sleep stages.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, revte
On Unbounded Composition Operators in -Spaces
Fundamental properties of unbounded composition operators in -spaces are
studied. Characterizations of normal and quasinormal composition operators are
provided. Formally normal composition operators are shown to be normal.
Composition operators generating Stieltjes moment sequences are completely
characterized. The unbounded counterparts of the celebrated Lambert's
characterizations of subnormality of bounded composition operators are shown to
be false. Various illustrative examples are supplied
First identification of large electric monopole strength in well-deformed rare earth nuclei
Excited states in the well-deformed rare earth isotopes Sm and
Er were populated via ``safe'' Coulomb excitation at the Munich MLL
Tandem accelerator. Conversion electrons were registered in a cooled Si(Li)
detector in conjunction with a magnetic transport and filter system, the
Mini-Orange spectrometer. For the first excited state in Sm at
1099 keV a large value of the monopole strength for the transition to the
ground state of could be extracted. This confirms the interpretation of the lowest
excited state in Sm as the collective -vibrational
excitation of the ground state. In Er the measured large electric
monopole strength of clearly identifies the state at 1934 keV to be the
-vibrational excitation of the ground state.Comment: submitted to Physics Letters
Occupational exposure to gases/fumes and mineral dust affect DNA methylation levels of genes regulating expression
Many workers are daily exposed to occupational agents like gases/fumes, mineral dust or biological dust, which could induce adverse health effects. Epigenetic mechanisms, such as DNA methylation, have been suggested to play a role. We therefore aimed to identify differentially methylated regions (DMRs) upon occupational exposures in never-smokers and investigated if these DMRs associated with gene expression levels. To determine the effects of occupational exposures independent of smoking, 903 never-smokers of the LifeLines cohort study were included. We performed three genome-wide methylation analyses (Illumina 450 K), one per occupational exposure being gases/fumes, mineral dust and biological dust, using robust linear regression adjusted for appropriate confounders. DMRs were identified using comb-p in Python. Results were validated in the Rotterdam Study (233 never-smokers) and methylation-expression associations were assessed using Biobank-based Integrative Omics Study data (n = 2802). Of the total 21 significant DMRs, 14 DMRs were associated with gases/fumes and 7 with mineral dust. Three of these DMRs were associated with both exposures (RPLP1 and LINC02169 (2x)) and 11 DMRs were located within transcript start sites of gene expression regulating genes. We replicated two DMRs with gases/fumes (VTRNA2-1 and GNAS) and one with mineral dust (CCDC144NL). In addition, nine gases/fumes DMRs and six mineral dust DMRs significantly associated with gene expression levels. Our data suggest that occupational exposures may induce differential methylation of gene expression regulating genes and thereby may induce adverse health effects. Given the millions of workers that are exposed daily to occupational exposures, further studies on this epigenetic mechanism and health outcomes are warranted
From Multiview Image Curves to 3D Drawings
Reconstructing 3D scenes from multiple views has made impressive strides in
recent years, chiefly by correlating isolated feature points, intensity
patterns, or curvilinear structures. In the general setting - without
controlled acquisition, abundant texture, curves and surfaces following
specific models or limiting scene complexity - most methods produce unorganized
point clouds, meshes, or voxel representations, with some exceptions producing
unorganized clouds of 3D curve fragments. Ideally, many applications require
structured representations of curves, surfaces and their spatial relationships.
This paper presents a step in this direction by formulating an approach that
combines 2D image curves into a collection of 3D curves, with topological
connectivity between them represented as a 3D graph. This results in a 3D
drawing, which is complementary to surface representations in the same sense as
a 3D scaffold complements a tent taut over it. We evaluate our results against
truth on synthetic and real datasets.Comment: Expanded ECCV 2016 version with tweaked figures and including an
