FBI INTERNET SURVEILLANCE: THE NEED FOR A NATURAL RIGHTS APPLICATION OF THE FOURTH AMENDMENT TO INSURE INTERNET PRIVACY

    Get PDF
Last year, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (“FBI”) acknowledged that it used an Internet electronic surveillance system called Carnivore to investigate and prosecute criminal suspects in more than two dozen cases. Carnivore is a software program developed by the FBI that can be installed on the network of an Internet Service Provider (“ISP”), such as America Online, to monitor, intercept and collect e-mail messages and other Internet activity made and received by individuals suspected of criminal activity. To date, the full capability of Carnivore remains a secret—the FBI refuses to disclose the source code (computer language) that would reveal how Carnivore operates, noting that disclosure of the source code would compromise the utility of the system to prosecute criminal activity on the Internet. The FBI’s use of Carnivore has raised concerns that it violates privacy rights, including the right to be free of unreasonable searches and seizures guaranteed by the Fourth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution

The Reverend Jim Jones and Religious, Political, and Racial Radicalism in Peoples Temple

    Get PDF
On November 18, 1978 over 900 members of Peoples Temple committed suicide or were murdered in Jonestown, Guyana under the direction of Reverend Jim Jones. This thesis explores the radical ideology of Jones leading up to and including the day of the murder-suicides by poisoned Flavor-Aid. Jones was a radical theologically, politically, and in racial thinking, although he was not an advocate for women’s rights. Jones claimed to be a prophet and then God, criticized the Bible and became atheistic, called himself a Marxist, a socialist, and a Communist, and strove for equal rights for minorities in the United States through his interactions with the Black Panther Party and prominent black religious figures, including Father Divine. The “cult” was said to have committed “revolutionary suicide,” a phrase used by Huey Newton. Jones’ radicalism in Peoples Temple may be one factor that ultimately led to the destruction of Jonestown that day

Norma’s project - a research study into the sexual assault of older women in Australia

INTRODUCTION Norma’s Project was conceived in response to the experience of Norma, the mother of one of the four researchers involved in the project. Norma was a confused and vulnerable 83 year old woman who was sexually assaulted by a male staff member during a respite stay in a residential aged care facility in 2011. Norma was able to tell her story coherently and consistently, and she was able to identify her attacker. She was fortunate that her daughter and others, including police and sexual assault workers, listened and believed her account, tried to bring the perpetrator to justice, and worked hard to make her feel safe again. Nonetheless, given the lack of forensic evidence, the case against the perpetrator was not strong enough for a successful court action to be prosecuted. The idea of older women as victims of sexual assault is relatively recent and little understood. However, it is becoming increasingly evident that, despite the silence that surrounds the topic, such assaults occur in many settings and circumstances. The lack of community awareness can be partly attributed to commonly held assumptions that older women are asexual. How, then, can they be the target of sexual assault? What is unimaginable and unacceptable becomes unsayable or invisible. The significant gaps in knowledge about the sexual assault of older women present a major obstacle to the development of frameworks and strategies for prevention and intervention. Consequently the Norma’s Project research team sought funding from the Australian Department of Social Services to address the gaps and increase our understandings of the settings, social contexts and vulnerabilities associated with the sexual assault of older women. The project aims to increase awareness of this important issue both within the community and amongst service providers, and to strengthen the community’s ability to prevent, respond to and speak out about the sexual assault of older women

The Influence of Effective Leadership on Teaching and Learning

    Get PDF
Principals and educators are challenged with meeting the increased demands of teaching and learning, which becomes difficult in environments filled with negative undercurrents, such as poverty, teacher satisfaction, salary, and instruction. Administrators must instill passion in teachers and provide effective leadership to motivate teachers to engage and energize students. The primary focus of this study was to determine how modeling instructional strategies by principals influence teachers’ implementation of strategies that promote greater student engagement and learning. Sustaining teachers’ passion for teaching and providing educators with the motivation to engage students in lessons through effective leadership and modeling were addressed in this research
