    High temperature stable separator for lithium batteries based on SiO² and hydroxypropyl guar gum

    A novel membrane based on silicon dioxide (SiO2_{2}) and hydroxypropyl guar gum (HPG) as binder is presented and tested as a separator for lithium-ion batteries. The separator is made with renewable and low cost materials and an environmentally friendly manufacturing processing using only water as solvent. The separator offers superior wettability and high electrolyte uptake due to the optimized porosity and the good affinity of SiO2_{2} and guar gum microstructure towards organic liquid electrolytes. Additionally, the separator shows high thermal stability and no dimensional-shrinkage at high temperatures due to the use of the ceramic filler and the thermally stable natural polymer. The electrochemical tests show the good electrochemical stability of the separator in a wide range of potential, as well as its outstanding cycle performance

    Multihierarchical electrodes based on titanate nanotubes and zinc oxide nanorods for photoelectrochemical water splitting

    Studies involving water splitting to form hydrogen and oxygen have attracted attention because H2 is considered the fuel of the future. Photoelectrocatalysts have been widely used for this application, and several metal oxides can be applied as catalysts. Among them, we highlight zinc oxide nanorods (ZnONRs) and titanate nanotubes (TiNTs); however, their individual nanostructures exhibit disadvantages. For example, ZnONR shows rapid recombination of the photogenerated charges, and TiNT gives rise to randomly orientated films; these disadvantages limit their application as photoanodes. In this study, for the first time, we present a new class of multihierarchical electrodes based on TiNT-decorated ZnONR films that exhibited superior results to the individual species. The TiNTs are homogenously dispersed over the surface of the rods without forming agglomerates, giving rise to a heterojunction that exhibits lower recombination rates. It was found that the results are better when the contents of TiNT in the electrode are higher; thus, glycine was successfully used as a bridge to link both of the structures, increasing the amount of TiNT decorating the rods. As a result, the photocurrent generated with these multihierarchical electrodes is higher than that obtained for pure ZnONR electrodes (0.9 mA and 0.45 mA, respectively), and the electrode potentials for O2 evolution is lower than that observed for pure TiNT electrodes (0 V and 0.8 V vs. ERHE, respectively). The IPCE values are also higher for the multihierarchical electrodes

    We derive the gravitational and electrostatic self-energies of a particle at rest in the background of a cosmic dispiration (topological defect), finding that the particle may experience potential steps, well potentials or potential barriers depending on the nature of the interaction and also on certain properties of the defect.     Delay times and reflection in chaotic cavities with absorption

    Absorption yields an additional exponential decay in open quantum systems which can be described by shifting the (scattering) energy E along the imaginary axis, E+i\hbar/2\tau_{a}. Using the random matrix approach, we calculate analytically the distribution of proper delay times (eigenvalues of the time-delay matrix) in chaotic systems with broken time-reversal symmetry that is valid for an arbitrary number of generally nonequivalent channels and an arbitrary absorption rate 1/\tau_{a}. The relation between the average delay time and the ``norm-leakage'' decay function is found. Fluctuations above the average at large values of delay times are strongly suppressed by absorption. The relation of the time-delay matrix to the reflection matrix S^{\dagger}S is established at arbitrary absorption that gives us the distribution of reflection eigenvalues.     Challenges in Complex Systems Science

    FuturICT foundations are social science, complex systems science, and ICT. The main concerns and challenges in the science of complex systems in the context of FuturICT are laid out in this paper with special emphasis on the Complex Systems route to Social Sciences. This include complex systems having: many heterogeneous interacting parts; multiple scales; complicated transition laws; unexpected or unpredicted emergence; sensitive dependence on initial conditions; path-dependent dynamics; networked hierarchical connectivities; interaction of autonomous agents; self-organisation; non-equilibrium dynamics; combinatorial explosion; adaptivity to changing environments; co-evolving subsystems; ill-defined boundaries; and multilevel dynamics. In this context, science is seen as the process of abstracting the dynamics of systems from data. This presents many challenges including: data gathering by large-scale experiment, participatory sensing and social computation, managing huge distributed dynamic and heterogeneous databases; moving from data to dynamical models, going beyond correlations to cause-effect relationships, understanding the relationship between simple and comprehensive models with appropriate choices of variables, ensemble modeling and data assimilation, modeling systems of systems of systems with many levels between micro and macro; and formulating new approaches to prediction, forecasting, and risk, especially in systems that can reflect on and change their behaviour in response to predictions, and systems whose apparently predictable behaviour is disrupted by apparently unpredictable rare or extreme events. These challenges are part of the FuturICT agenda

    We use fits to recent published CPLEAR data on neutral kaon decays to π+π\pi^+\pi^- and πeν\pi e\nu to constrain the CPT--violation parameters appearing in a formulation of the neutral kaon system as an open quantum-mechanical system.     Interaction of Genetic Variations in NFE2L2 and SELENOS Modulates the Risk of Hashimoto's Thyroiditis.

    Background: Several single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are known to increase the risk of Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT); such SNPs reside in thyroid-specific genes or in genes related to autoimmunity, inflammation, and/or cellular defense to stress. The transcription factor Nrf2, encoded by NFE2L2, is a master regulator of the cellular antioxidant response. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of genetic variation in NFE2L2 on the risk of developing HT. Methods: In a case-control candidate gene association study, functional SNPs in the NFE2L2 promoter (rs35652124, rs6706649, and rs6721961) were examined either as independent risk factors or in combination with a previously characterized HT risk allele (rs28665122) in the gene SELENOS, encoding selenoprotein S (SelS). A total of 997 individuals from the north of Portugal (Porto) were enrolled, comprising 481 HT patients and 516 unrelated healthy controls. SELENOS and NFE2L2 SNPs were genotyped using TaqMan <sup>®</sup> assays and Sanger sequencing, respectively. Odds ratios (ORs) were calculated using logistic regression, with adjustment for sex and age. Expression of SelS was analyzed by immunohistochemistry in thyroid tissue from HT patients and control subjects. Molecular interactions between the Nrf2 and SelS pathways were investigated in thyroid tissues from mice and in rat PCCL3 thyroid follicular cells. Results: When all three NFE2L2 SNPs were considered together, the presence of one or more minor alleles was associated with a near-significant increased risk (OR = 1.43, p = 0.072). Among subjects harboring only major NFE2L2 alleles, there was no increased HT risk associated with heterozygosity or homozygosity for the SELENOS minor allele. Conversely, in subjects heterozygous or homozygous for the SELENOS risk allele, the presence of an NFE2L2 minor allele significantly increased HT risk by 2.8-fold (p = 0.003). Immunohistochemistry showed reduced expression of SelS in thyroid follicular cells of HT patients. In Nrf2 knockout mice, there was reduced expression of SelS in thyroid follicular cells; conversely, in PCCL3 cells, reducing SelS expression caused reduced activity of Nrf2 signaling. Conclusions: The NFE2L2 promoter genotype interacts with the SELENOS promoter genotype to modulate the risk of HT in a Portuguese population. This interaction may be due to a bidirectional positive feedback between the Nrf2 and SelS pathways

    Avaliação fitossociológica da comunidade infestante em áreas de transição para o café orgânico.

    Objetivou-se com este trabalho verificar os efeitos dos insumos orgânicos e convencionais na dinâmica de plantas daninhas da lavoura durante o primeiro e o segundo ano de transição agroecológica. Para isso, montou-se um experimento em um cafezal de seis anos, onde iniciou-se a transição para o sistema de cultivo orgânico. A espécie mais importante no primeiro ano da transição, na maioria das áreas avaliadas, foi Ageratum conyzoides; no segundo ano ocorreu considerável mudança na relação de dominância entre as espécies, destacando-se Leunurus sibiricus na maior parte das áreas estudadas. Ocorreu também aumento do número de espécies presentes na maioria das áreas de um ano para o outro. No segundo ano de transição observou-se decréscimo na diversidade de espécies em relação ao primeiro ano. Dessa forma, pode-se concluir que nos dois anos de avaliação verificaram-se mudanças no número, na diversidade e na relação de importância entre as espécies de um ano para o outro
