Construction of SU(3) irreps in canonical SO(3)-coupled bases
Alternative canonical methods for defining canonical SO(3)-coupled bases for
SU(3) irreps are considered and compared. It is shown that a basis that
diagonalizes a particular linear combination of SO(3) invariants in the SU(3)
universal enveloping algebra gives basis states that have good quantum
numbers in the asymptotic rotor-model limit.Comment: no figure
Endometriosis: A Rare Cause of Large Bowel Obstruction.
Large bowel obstruction can result in significant morbidity and mortality, especially in cases of acute complete obstruction. There are many possible causes, the most common in adults being colorectal cancer. Endometriosis is a benign disease, and the most affected extragenital location is the bowel, especially the rectosigmoid junction. However, transmural involvement and acute occlusion are very rare events. We report an exceptional case of acute large bowel obstruction as the initial presentation of endometriosis. The differential diagnosis of colorectal carcinoma may be challenging, and this case emphasizes the need to consider intestinal endometriosis in females at a fertile age presenting with gastrointestinal symptoms and an intestinal mass causing complete large bowel obstruction.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Physical parameters in the hot spots and jets of Compact Symmetric Objects
We present a model to determine the physical parameters of jets and hot spots
of a sample of CSOs under very basic assumptions like synchrotron emission and
minimum energy conditions. Based on this model we propose a simple evolutionary
scenario for these sources assuming that they evolve in ram pressure
equilibrium with the external medium and constant jet power. The parameters of
our model are constrained from fits of observational data (radio luminosity,
hot spot radius and hot spot advance speed) versus projected linear size. From
these plots we conclude that CSOs evolve self-similarly and that their radio
luminosity increases with linear size along the first kiloparsec. Assuming that
the jets feeding CSOs are relativistic from both kinematical and
thermodynamical points of view, we use the values of the pressure and particle
number density within the hot spots to estimate the fluxes of momentum
(thrust), energy, and particles of these relativistic jets. The mean jet power
obtained in this way is within an order of magnitude that inferred for FRII
sources, which is consistent with CSOs being the possible precursors of large
doubles. The inferred flux of particles corresponds to, for a barionic jet,
about a 10% of the mass accreted by a black hole of at
the Eddington limit, pointing towards a very efficient conversion of accretion
flow into ejection, or to a leptonic composition of jets.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures. Accepted for publication in Astrophysical

Web-assisted tunneling in the kicked harmonic oscillator
We show that heating of harmonically trapped ions by periodic delta kicks is
dramatically enhanced at isolated values of the Lamb-Dicke parameter. At these
values, quasienergy eigenstates localized on island structures undergo avoided
crossings with extended web-states.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures. Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. Let

Separatrix Reconnections in Chaotic Regimes
In this paper we extend the concept of separatrix reconnection into chaotic
regimes. We show that even under chaotic conditions one can still understand
abrupt jumps of diffusive-like processes in the relevant phase-space in terms
of relatively smooth realignments of stable and unstable manifolds of unstable
fixed points.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, submitted do Phys. Rev. E (1998
The Role of Fermions in Bubble Nucleation
We present a study of the role of fermions in the decay of metastable states
of a scalar field via bubble nucleation. We analyze both one and
three-dimensional systems by using a gradient expansion for the calculation of
the fermionic determinant. The results of the one-dimensional case are compared
to the exact results of previous work.Comment: 15 pages, revtex, 9 figure
