Radiation from a D-dimensional collision of shock waves: first order perturbation theory
We study the spacetime obtained by superimposing two equal Aichelburg-Sexl
shock waves in D dimensions traveling, head-on, in opposite directions.
Considering the collision in a boosted frame, one shock becomes stronger than
the other, and a perturbative framework to compute the metric in the future of
the collision is setup. The geometry is given, in first order perturbation
theory, as an integral solution, in terms of initial data on the null surface
where the strong shock has support. We then extract the radiation emitted in
the collision by using a D-dimensional generalisation of the Landau-Lifschitz
pseudo-tensor and compute the percentage of the initial centre of mass energy
epsilon emitted as gravitational waves. In D=4 we find epsilon=25.0%, in
agreement with the result of D'Eath and Payne. As D increases, this percentage
increases monotonically, reaching 40.0% in D=10. Our result is always within
the bound obtained from apparent horizons by Penrose, in D=4, yielding 29.3%,
and Eardley and Giddings, in D> 4, which also increases monotonically with
dimension, reaching 41.2% in D=10. We also present the wave forms and provide a
physical interpretation for the observed peaks, in terms of the null generators

Minimum length effects in black hole physics
We review the main consequences of the possible existence of a minimum
measurable length, of the order of the Planck scale, on quantum effects
occurring in black hole physics. In particular, we focus on the ensuing minimum
mass for black holes and how modified dispersion relations affect the Hawking
decay, both in four space-time dimensions and in models with extra spatial
dimensions. In the latter case, we briefly discuss possible phenomenological

The Eyes Have It: Sex and Sexual Orientation Differences in Pupil Dilation Patterns
Recent research suggests profound sex and sexual orientation differences in sexual response. These results, however, are based on measures of genital arousal, which have potential limitations such as volunteer bias and differential measures for the sexes. The present study introduces a measure less affected by these limitations. We assessed the pupil dilation of 325 men and women of various sexual orientations to male and female erotic stimuli. Results supported hypotheses. In general, self-reported sexual orientation corresponded with pupil dilation to men and women. Among men, substantial dilation to both sexes was most common in bisexual-identified men. In contrast, among women, substantial dilation to both sexes was most common in heterosexual-identified women. Possible reasons for these differences are discussed. Because the measure of pupil dilation is less invasive than previous measures of sexual response, it allows for studying diverse age and cultural populations, usually not included in sexuality research

Psychologists’ dilemmas in career counselling practice
In this study, we explored main dilemmas psychologists face in career
counselling in two main professional settings: employment and education. Participants
included 24 experienced Portuguese psychologists, working in employment
(n = 14) and educational (n = 10) settings. We used consensual qualitative
research to conduct and analyse semi-structured interviews. Results revealed
dilemmas’ in five domains: neutrality, assessment, dual loyalty, role boundaries, and
confidentiality, with the typical dilemma in the domain of neutrality. Differences
between groups were found in the domains of dual loyalty and role boundaries.Dans cette étude, nous avons exploré les principaux dilemmes rencontrés
par les psychologues dans le conseil en orientation dans deux milieux professionnels
centraux: le placement et l’éducation. Parmi les participants figuraient 24 psychologues
portugais expérimentés travaillant dans des contextes de placement (n = 14)
et d’éducation (n = 10). Nous avons utilisé la recherche qualitative consensuelle
pour mener et analyser les entretiens semi-structurés. Les re´sultats ont révé lé des
dilemmes dans cinq domaines: la neutralité, l’évaluation, la double loyauté, les
limites du rôle, et la confidentialité, avec le dilemme typique dans le domaine de la
neutralité. Les différences entre les groupes ont été identifiees dans les domaines de

qualitative Forschung um semi-strukturierte Interviews durchzufu¨hren und zu
analysieren. Die Ergebnisse zeigten Dilemmata in fünf Bereichen: Neutralität,
Beurteilung, doppelte Loyalität, Rollengrenzen und Vertraulichkeit, mit dem
typischen Dilemma in der Domäne der Neutralität. Unterschiede zwischen den

Breve análise do regime disciplinar diferenciado frente aos Direitos Humanos
RESUMO
O Regime Disciplinar Diferenciado (RDD) foi inserido no ordenamento jurídico brasileiro com a finalidade de coibir e/ou minimizar as atividades de grupos e facções criminosas que agiam dentro e fora das unidades prisionais. Dotado de regras rígidas, acaba por suprimir direitos pré-estabelecidos na Lei de Execuções Penais, sendo alvo de protestos por parte de corrente doutrinária, a qual sustenta estar o regime eivado de inconstitucionalidade, por violar Direitos Humanos e individuais fundamentais. Nesta rinha jurídica, deve-se sobressair a luta pela manutenção da ordem e bem-estar social, vez que nenhum direito ou garantias constitucionais são absolutos, não podendo a marginalidade usá-los como escudo na persecução da violência.

ABSTRACT
The Differentiated Disciplinary Regime (DDR) was inserted in the Brazilian legal system in order to restrain and / or minimize the activities of groups and criminal gangs who operated in and out of prisons. Equipped with rigid rules, ultimately suppress pre-established rights in the Criminal Penalties Law, the target of protests by doctrinal current, which sustains the being riddled with unconstitutional regime for violating basic human and individual rights. This legal baiting, should stand the struggle for maintaining order and social welfare, since no law or constitutional guarantees are absolute and can not marginality use them as a shield in pursuit of violence.

Dynamical Boson Stars
The idea of stable, localized bundles of energy has strong appeal as a model
for particles. In the 1950s John Wheeler envisioned such bundles as smooth
configurations of electromagnetic energy that he called {\em geons}, but none
were found. Instead, particle-like solutions were found in the late 1960s with
the addition of a scalar field, and these were given the name {\em boson
stars}. Since then, boson stars find use in a wide variety of models as sources
of dark matter, as black hole mimickers, in simple models of binary systems,
and as a tool in finding black holes in higher dimensions with only a single
killing vector. We discuss important varieties of boson stars, their dynamic

Clinical utility of remote platelet function measurement using P-selectin: assessment of aspirin, clopidogrel, and prasugrel and bleeding disorders
Vascular diseases such as myocardial infarction and ischemic stroke are associated with increased platelet function whilst the risk of recurrence is reduced by antiplatelet agents such as aspirin, clopidogrel, and prasugrel. However, some patients exhibit high platelet reactivity, especially with clopidogrel. Existing platelet function tests may not be ideal in that they can be expensive, are often time consuming, and measurements must be made near to the patient and within a few hours of blood collection. Platelet activation leads to translocation of P-selectin from alpha-granules to the cell surface. Following activation with arachidonic acid (which is blocked by aspirin) or adenosine diphosphate (inhibited by clopidogrel) and fixation, samples may be stored or posted to a laboratory performing flow cytometric quantification of platelet P-selectin expression. Acute myocardial infarction and ischemic stroke are associated with high platelet reactivity on clopidogrel in 6–58% of patients when assessed with P-selectin expression, and high reactivity was associated with an increased risk of recurrence after myocardial infarction. Use of P-selectin expression tests may also be of relevance to surgical and veterinary practice and the diagnosis of mild bleeding disorders. The present review explores this topic in further detail
Exploring the physiological role of transthyretin in glucose metabolism in the liver
Transthyretin (TTR), a 55 kDa evolutionarily conserved protein, presents altered levels in several conditions, including malnutrition, inflammation, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s Disease. It has been shown that TTR is involved in several functions, such as insulin release from pancreatic ß-cells, recovery of blood glucose and glucagon levels of the islets of Langerhans, food intake, and body weight. Here, the role of TTR in hepatic glucose metabolism was explored by studying the levels of glucose in mice with different TTR genetic backgrounds, namely with two copies of the TTR gene, TTR+/+; with only one copy, TTR+/-; and without TTR, TTR-/-. Results showed that TTR haploinsufficiency (TTR+/-) leads to higher glucose in both plasma and in primary hepatocyte culture media and lower expression of the influx glucose transporters, GLUT1, GLUT3, and GLUT4. Further, we showed that TTR haploinsufficiency decreases pyruvate kinase M type (PKM) levels in mice livers, by qRT-PCR, but it does not affect the hepatic production of the studied metabolites, as determined by 1H NMR. Finally, we demonstrated that TTR increases mitochondrial density in HepG2 cells and that TTR insufficiency triggers a higher degree of oxidative phosphorylation in the liver. Brane-World Gravity
The observable universe could be a 1+3-surface (the "brane") embedded in a
1+3+\textit{d}-dimensional spacetime (the "bulk"), with Standard Model
particles and fields trapped on the brane while gravity is free to access the
bulk. At least one of the \textit{d} extra spatial dimensions could be very
large relative to the Planck scale, which lowers the fundamental gravity scale,
possibly even down to the electroweak ( TeV) level. This revolutionary
picture arises in the framework of recent developments in M theory. The
1+10-dimensional M theory encompasses the known 1+9-dimensional superstring
theories, and is widely considered to be a promising potential route to quantum
gravity. At low energies, gravity is localized at the brane and general
relativity is recovered, but at high energies gravity "leaks" into the bulk,
behaving in a truly higher-dimensional way. This introduces significant changes
to gravitational dynamics and perturbations, with interesting and potentially
testable implications for high-energy astrophysics, black holes, and cosmology.
Brane-world models offer a phenomenological way to test some of the novel
predictions and corrections to general relativity that are implied by M theory.
This review analyzes the geometry, dynamics and perturbations of simple
brane-world models for cosmology and astrophysics, mainly focusing on warped
5-dimensional brane-worlds based on the Randall--Sundrum models. We also cover
the simplest brane-world models in which 4-dimensional gravity on the brane is
modified at \emph{low} energies -- the 5-dimensional Dvali--Gabadadze--Porrati
