    On rarely g-continuous functions

Popa introduced the notion of rare continuity. In this paper, we introduce a new class of functions called rarely g-continuous functions and investigate some of its fundamental properties. This type of continuity is a generalization of both rare continuity and weak continuity

Adequacy of elderly dependent clothing: User's comfort and caregiver's handling facilities

OBJECTIVE The elder population is increasing as a result of today’s quality of life. In particular the elderly dependent suffer with the available standard clothing, lacking in providing solutions to their specific needs. Simultaneously, caregivers handling is also challenged everyday when looking after them. This research is part of a PhD project which aims to analyze the anatomical shape of the elderly dependent of care, quantifying their measurements, shape and posture, compensating asymmetries, considering their limitations, including clothing requirements of comfort and associated factors, like functionality and handling. This work is financed by FEDER funds through the Competitive Factors Operational Program (COMPETE) and by national funds through FCT (Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology) with the project PEstC/CTM/U10264, NORTE-07-0402-FEDER-019152 and CSF/CAPEs.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The portuguese public hospitals performance evolution before and during the SARS-CoV-2 Pandemic (2017–2022)

COVID-19 is a disease caused by SARS-CoV-2, which has spread worldwide since the beginning of 2020. Several pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical strategies were proposed to contain the virus, including vaccination and lockdowns. One of the consequences of the pandemic was the denial or delay of access to convenient healthcare services, but also potentially the increase in adverse events within those services, like the number of hospital infections. Therefore, the main question here is about what happened to the performance of Portuguese public hospitals. The main goal of this work was to test if the Portuguese public hospitals' performance has been affected by the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. We used the Benefit-of-Doubt method integrated with the Malmquist Index to analyze the performance evolution over time. Then, we employed a multiple regression model to test whether some pandemic-related variables could explain the performance results. We considered a database of 40 Portuguese public hospitals evaluated from January 2017 to May 2022. The period 2017 to 2019 corresponds to the baseline (pre-pandemic), against which the remaining period will be compared (during the pandemic). We also considered fourteen variables characterizing hospital quality, divided into three main performance definitions (efficiency and productivity; access; safety and care appropriateness). As potential explanatory variables, we consider seven dimensions, including vaccination rate and the need for intensive care for COVID-19-infected people. The results suggest that COVID-19 pandemic features help explain the drop in access after 2020, but not the evolution of safety and appropriateness of care, which surprisingly increased the whole time.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Basic pattern design for care dependent elderly

    Get PDF
This study presents the first results of a PhD in textile engineering aiming to understand the clothes needs of the female elderly who are under the care of professionals or relatives. The initial body measurements of the elderly with and over 65 and the way they will impact in the basic pattern design are presented. A new concept of clothing is proposed, based in the shape and proportions of their bodies, considering their anatomic positions and their needs and limitations during the task of dressing/undressing and seeking the comfort of the user with the handling of the caregiver. The most common profile of these women corresponds to individuals that spend a great part of their day in a sitting position, in wheelchairs or in a conventional seat. After an ergonomic analysis, with the use of specific measurements, it was possible to perform a basic pattern design for this target population, which will after be used in the production of the appropriate clothing prototypes, respecting their needs. 78 measurements of elderly women in a sitting position were obtained, 46 in two institutions in the city of Guimaraes (Portugal) and 32 in two institutions in the city of Teresina (Brazil). 8 body measurements were considered to build an average measurements table from pre-established criteria for the construction of the clothing prototypes.FEDER funds through the Competitive Factors Operational Program (COMPETE) and by national funds through FCT - Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology under the project UID/CTM/000264 and CSF/CAPEsinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Four reflections on the new global mental health priorities

    Get PDF
The discussion of the achievements and limitations of the strategies prioritised in global mental health that has taken place in recent years contributed to a unified vision for action that addresses the gaps still existing on prevention, treatment, quality of care and human rights protection. This editorial presents four reflections on the impact of this vision on the definition of future priorities, particularly in the areas of policy implementation, services reconfiguration and organisation, human rights and research. It concludes that further debate is needed to redefine the balance between priorities and strategies that can better promote an effective response to the needs of low and middle income countries, and to ensure an efficient coordination of efforts in the future.publishersversionpublishe

A locally convex space E is polynomially barrelled if and only if, for every positive integer m and for every Banach space F, the space of all continuous m-homogeneous polynomials from E into F is quasi-complete for the topology of pointwise convergence

Revision of the EU Green Public Procurement (GPP) Criteria for Textile Products and Services: Technical Report with final criteria.

    Get PDF
The revision of the Green Public Procurement (GPP) criteria for Textile products and Services is aimed at helping public authorities to ensure that textiles products and services are procured in such a way that it delivers environmental improvements that contribute to European policy objectives for energy, chemical management and resource efficiency, as well as reducing life cycle costs. In order to identify the most significant improvement areas for criteria development an analysis has been carried out of the environmental impacts of manufacturing and using textile products and providing textile services. The most commonly used procurement processes have been also identified and are further addressed in the separate criteria document (published as a Staff Working Document of the Commission). Together these two documents aim to provide public authorities with orientation on how to effectively integrate these GPP criteria into their procurement processes.JRC.B.5-Circular Economy and Industrial Leadershi

Ergonomic clothing design for care-dependent elderly women

    Get PDF
This paper describes the development of ergonomic clothing suitable for the corporal characteristics of the care-dependent elderly women at four institutions: two located in the city of Guimaraes (Portugal) and two in the city of Teresina (Brazil). The prototypes were developed based on the needs of the elderly according to some functional factors as well as their physical conditions, aiming at easier handling by the caregiver and comfort for the user. Below, the functional properties of the applied fabrics and accessories, the modeling process, and the garment assembly are described. We would like to acknowledge UFPI-Federal University of PiauĂ and 2C2T-Science Center for Textile Technology from University of Minho.
