Reading in two writing systems: Accommodation and assimilation of the brain's reading network
Bilingual reading can require more than knowing two languages. Learners must acquire also the writing conventions of their second language, which can differ in its deep mapping principles (writing system) and its visual configurations (script). We review ERP (event-related potential) and fMRI studies of both Chinese-English bilingualism and Chinese second language learning that bear on the system accommodation hypothesis: the neural networks acquired for one system must be modified to accommodate the demands of a new system. ERP bilingual studies demonstrate temporal indicators of the brain's experience with L1 and L2 and with the frequency of encounters of words in L2. ERP learning studies show that early visual processing differences between L1 and L2 diminish during a second term of study. fMRI studies of learning converge in finding that learners recruit bilateral occipital-temporal and also middle frontal areas when reading Chinese, similar to the pattern of native speakers and different from alphabetic reading. The evidence suggests an asymmetry: alphabetic readers have a neural network that accommodates the demands of Chinese by recruiting neural structures less needed for alphabetic reading. Chinese readers have a neural network that partly assimilates English into the Chinese system, especially in the visual stages of word identification. © Cambridge University Press 2007.published_or_final_versio
Improved kidney function in patients who switch their protease inhibitor from atazanavir or lopinavir to darunavir
OBJECTIVE: Atazanavir (ATV) and lopinavir (LPV) have been associated with kidney
disease progression in HIV positive patients, with no data reported for darunavir (DRV).
We examined kidney function in patients who switched their protease inhibitor from
ATV or LPV to DRV.
DESIGN: Cohort study.
METHODS: Data were from the UK CHIC study. We compared pre and post switch
estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) slopes (expressed in ml/min per 1.73 m2 per
year) in all switchers and those with rapid eGFR decline (>5 ml/min per 1.73 m2 per
year) on ATV or LPV. Mixed-effects models were adjusted for age, gender, ethnicity,
eGFR at switch and time updated CD4þ cell count, HIV RNA and cumulative tenofovir
(tenofovir disoproxil fumarate) exposure.
RESULTS: Data from 1430 patients were included. At the time of switching to DRV,
median age was 45 years, 79% were men, 76% had an undetectable viral load, and
median eGFR was 93 ml/min per 1.73 m2
. Adjusted mean (95% confidence interval) pre
and post switch eGFR slopes were 0.84 (1.31, 0.36) and 1.23 (0.80, 1.66) for ATV
(P < 0.001), and 0.57 (1.09, 0.05) and 0.62 (0.28, 0.96) for LPV (P < 0.001). Stable
or improved renal function was observed in patients with rapid eGFR decline on ATV or
LPV who switched to DRV [15.27 (19.35, 11.19) and 3.72 (1.78, 5.66), P < 0.001
for ATV, 11.93 (14.60, 9.26) and 0.87 (0.54, 2.27), P < 0.001 for LPV]. Similar
results were obtained if participants who discontinued tenofovir disoproxil fumarate at
the time of switch were excluded.
CONCLUSIONS: We report improved kidney function in patients who switched from ATV
or LPV to DRV, suggesting that DRV may have a more favourable renal safety profile
Holographic metastability
We show how supersymmetric QCD in a slice of AdS can naturally acquire
metastable vacua. The formulation closely follows that of Intriligator, Seiberg
and Shih (ISS), with an "electric" sector on the UV brane and a "magnetic"
sector on the IR brane. However the 't Hooft anomaly matching that constrains
the Seiberg duality central to ISS is replaced by anomaly inflow and
cancellation, and the source of strong coupling is the CFT to which the theory
couples rather than the gauge groups. The theory contains an anomaly free
R-symmetry that, when broken by UV effects, leads to an O'Raifeartaigh model on
the IR brane. In contrast to ISS, the R-symmetry breaking in the UV can be
maximal, and yet the R-symmetry breaking in the IR theory remains under strict
control: there is no need for retrofitting of small parameters.Comment: 20 pages, 2 figure
Are chimpanzees really so poor at understanding imperative pointing? Some new data and an alternative view of canine and ape social cognition
There is considerable interest in comparative research on different species’ abilities to respond to human communicative cues such as gaze and pointing. It has been reported that some canines perform significantly better than monkeys and apes on tasks requiring the comprehension of either declarative or imperative pointing and these differences have been attributed to domestication in dogs. Here we tested a sample of chimpanzees on a task requiring comprehension of an imperative request and show that, though there are considerable individual differences, the performance by the apes rival those reported in pet dogs. We suggest that small differences in methodology can have a pronounced influence on performance on these types of tasks. We further suggest that basic differences in subject sampling, subject recruitment and rearing experiences have resulted in a skewed representation of canine abilities compared to those of monkeys and apes
Canalization of the evolutionary trajectory of the human influenza virus
Since its emergence in 1968, influenza A (H3N2) has evolved extensively in
genotype and antigenic phenotype. Antigenic evolution occurs in the context of
a two-dimensional 'antigenic map', while genetic evolution shows a
characteristic ladder-like genealogical tree. Here, we use a large-scale
individual-based model to show that evolution in a Euclidean antigenic space
provides a remarkable correspondence between model behavior and the
epidemiological, antigenic, genealogical and geographic patterns observed in
influenza virus. We find that evolution away from existing human immunity
results in rapid population turnover in the influenza virus and that this
population turnover occurs primarily along a single antigenic axis. Thus,
selective dynamics induce a canalized evolutionary trajectory, in which the
evolutionary fate of the influenza population is surprisingly repeatable and

Prevention and management of excessive gestational weight gain: a survey of overweight and obese pregnant women
Background - Excessive gestational weight gain is associated with adverse infant, childhood and maternal outcomes and research to develop interventions to address this issue is ongoing. The views of women on gestational weight gain and the resources they would consider helpful in addressing this are however largely unknown. This survey aimed to determine the views of newly pregnant women, living in areas of social disadvantage, on 1) their current body weight and potential gestational weight gain and 2) the resources or interventions they would consider helpful in preventing excessive gestational weight gain.
Methods - A convenience sample of overweight and obese pregnant women living in Fife, UK, were invited to complete a short anonymised questionnaire at their 12 week booking visit.
Results - 428 women, BMI>25 kg/m2, completed the questionnaire. Fifty-four per cent of respondents were obese (231) and 62% were living in areas of mild to moderate deprivation. Over three-quarters of participants felt dissatisfied with their current weight (81%). The majority of women (60%) expressed some concern about potential weight gain. Thirty-nine percent were unconcerned about weight gain during their pregnancy, including 34 women (19%) who reported having retained weight gained in earlier pregnancies. Amongst those concerned about weight gain advice on physical activity (41%) and access to sports/leisure facilities were favoured resources (36%). Fewer women (12%) felt that group sessions on healthy eating or attending a clinic for individualised advice (14%) would be helpful. "Getting time off work" was the most frequently cited barrier (48%) to uptake of resources other than leaflets.
Conclusions- These data suggest a lack of awareness amongst overweight and obese women regarding excessive gestational weight gain. Monitoring of gestational weight gain, and approaches for its management, should be formally integrated into routine antenatal care. Barriers to the uptake of resources to address weight gain are numerous and must be considered in the design of future interventions and services
International lease accounting reform and economic consequences: the views of UK users and preparers
In response to perceived difficulties with extant lease-accounting standards in operation worldwide, the G4+1 issued a discussion paper which proposes that all leases should be recognized on the balance sheet [ASB (1999). Leases: Implementation of a new approach, discussion paper. London: Accounting Standards Board]. Leasing is now on the active agenda of the IASB. A major difficulty faced by standard setters lies in overcoming the preparer/user lobbying imbalance and obtaining ex ante evidence on the likely impact of regulatory reform. This paper contributes to the ongoing international debate by conducting a questionnaire survey of U.K. users and preparers to assess their views on proposals for lease-accounting reform and on the potential economic consequences of their adoption. The results, based on 132 responses, indicate that both groups accept that there are deficiencies in the current rules, but they do not agree on the way forward and believe that the proposals would lead to significant economic consequences for key parties. A slice of AdS_5 as the large N limit of Seiberg duality
A slice of AdS_5 is used to provide a 5D gravitational description of 4D
strongly-coupled Seiberg dual gauge theories. An (electric) SU(N) gauge theory
in the conformal window at large N is described by the 5D bulk, while its
weakly coupled (magnetic) dual is confined to the IR brane. This framework can
be used to construct an N = 1 MSSM on the IR brane, reminiscent of the original
Randall-Sundrum model. In addition, we use our framework to study
strongly-coupled scenarios of supersymmetry breaking mediated by gauge forces.
This leads to a unified scenario that connects the extra-ordinary gauge
