Multivariable norm optimal iterative learning control with auxiliary optimization
The paper describes a substantial extension of Norm Optimal Iterative Learning Control (NOILC) that permits tracking of a class of finite dimensional reference signals whilst simultaneously converging to the solution of a constrained quadratic optimization problem. The theory is presented in a general functional analytical framework using operators between chosen real Hilbert spaces. This is applied to solve problems in continuous time where tracking is only required at selected intermediate points of the time interval but, simultaneously, the solution is required to minimize a specified quadratic objective function of the input signals and chosen auxiliary (state) variables. Applications to the discrete time case, including the case of multi-rate sampling, are also summarized. The algorithms are motivated by practical need and provide a methodology for reducing undesirable effects such as payload spillage, vibration tendencies and actuator wear whilst maintaining the desired tracking accuracy necessary for task completion. Solutions in terms of NOILC methodologies involving both feedforward and feedback components offer the possibilities of greater robustness than purely feedforward actions. Robustness of the feedforward implementation is discussed and the work is illustrated by experimental results from a robotic manipulator
Upper limb electrical stimulation using input-output linearization and iterative learning control
A control scheme is developed for multi-joint upper limb reference tracking using functional electrical stimulation (FES). In accordance with the needs of stroke rehabilitation, FES is applied to a reduced set of muscles in the arm and shoulder, with support against gravity provided by a passive exoskeletal mechanism. The approach fuses input-output linearization with iterative learning control (ILC), one of the few techniques to have been applied in clinical treatment trials with patients. This powerful hybrid control structure hence extends performance and scope of clinically proven technology for widespread application in rehabilitation robotic and FES domains. In addition to simplifying tracking and convergence properties of the stimulated joints, the framework enables conditions for the stability of unstimulated joints to be derived for the first time. Experimental results confirm tracking performance of the stimulated joints, together with unstimulated joint stability
Multiple model adaptive control of functional electrical stimulation
This paper establishes the feasibility of multiple-model switched adaptive control to regulate functional electrical stimulation for upper limb stroke rehabilitation. An estimation-based multiple-model switched adaptive control (EMMSAC) framework for nonlinear time-invariant systems is described, and extensions are presented to enable application to time-varying Hammerstein structures that can accurately represent the stimulated arm. A principled design procedure is then developed to construct both a suitable set of candidate models from experimental data and a corresponding set of tracking controllers. The procedure is applied to a sample of able-bodied young participants to produce a general EMMSAC controller. This is then applied to a different sample of the population during an isometric nonvoluntary trajectory tracking task. The results show that it is possible to eliminate model identification while employing closed-loop controllers that maintain high performance in the presence of rapidly changing system dynamics. This paper hence addresses critical limitations to effective stroke rehabilitation in a clinical setting
Feedback control of electrical stimulation electrode arrays
Electrical stimulation electrode arrays are an emerging technology that enables muscles to be artificially contracted through the activation of their associated motor neurons. A principal application of electrical stimulation is to assist human motion for orthotic or therapeutic purposes. This paper develops a framework for the design of model-based electrode array feedback controllers that balance joint angle tracking performance with the degree of disturbance and modeling mismatch that can exist in the true underlying biomechanical system. This framework is used to develop a simplified control design procedure that is suitable for application in a clinical setting. Experimental results evaluate the feasibility of the control design approach through tests on ten participants using both fabric and polycarbonate electrode arrays
Law, politics and the governance of English and Scottish joint-stock companies 1600-1850
This article examines the impact of law on corporate governance by means of a case study of joint-stock enterprise in England and Scotland before 1850. Based on a dataset of over 450 company constitutions together with qualitative information on governance practice, it finds little evidence to support the hypothesis that common-law regimes such as England were more supportive of economic growth than civil-law jurisdictions such as Scotland: indeed, levels of shareholder protection were slightly stronger in the civil-law zone. Other factors, such as local political institutions, played a bigger role in shaping organisational forms and business practice
Mechanistic Insights into β-Lactamase-Catalysed Carbapenem Degradation Through Product Characterisation
β-Lactamases are a major threat to the clinical use of carbapenems, which are often antibiotics of last resort. Despite this, the reaction outcomes and mechanisms by which β-lactamases degrade carbapenems are still not fully understood. The carbapenem bicyclic core consists of a β-lactam ring fused to a pyrroline ring. Following β-lactamase-mediated opening of the β-lactam, the pyrroline may interconvert between an enamine (2-pyrroline) form and two epimeric imine (1-pyrroline) forms; previous crystallographic and spectroscopic studies have reported all three of these forms in the contexts of hydrolysis by different β-lactamases. As we show by NMR spectroscopy, the serine β-lactamases (KPC-2, SFC-1, CMY-10, OXA-23, and OXA-48) and metallo-β-lactamases (NDM-1, VIM-1, BcII, CphA, and L1) tested all degrade carbapenems to preferentially give the Δ2 (enamine) and/or (R)-Δ1 (imine) products. Rapid non-enzymatic tautomerisation of the Δ2 product to the (R)-Δ1 product prevents assignment of the nascent enzymatic product by NMR. The observed stereoselectivity implies that carbapenemases control the form of their pyrroline ring intermediate(s)/product(s), thereby preventing pyrroline tautomerisation from inhibiting catalysis.FWN – Publicaties zonder aanstelling Universiteit Leide
Stakeholder perceptions of key aspects of high-quality cancer care to assess with patient reported outcome measures: A systematic review
Performance measurement is the process of collecting, analyzing, and reporting standard-ized measures of clinical performance that can be compared across practices to evaluate how well care was provided. We conducted a systematic review to identify stakeholder perceptions of key symptoms and health domains to test as patient-reported performance measures in oncology. Stakeholders included cancer patients, caregivers, clinicians, and healthcare administrators. Standard review methodology was used, consistent with PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses). MEDLINE/PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library were searched to identify relevant studies through August 2020. Four coders independently reviewed entries and con-flicts were resolved by a fifth coder. Efficacy and effectiveness studies, and studies focused exclusively on patient experiences of care (e.g., communication skills of providers) were excluded. Searches generated 1813 articles and 1779 were coded as not relevant, leaving 34 international articles for extraction. Patients, caregivers, clinicians, and healthcare administrators prioritize psychosocial care (e.g., distress) and symptom management for patient-reported performance measures. Patients and caregivers also perceive that maintaining physical function and daily activities are critical. Clinicians and administrators perceive control of specific symptoms to be critical (gastrointestinal symptoms, pain, poor sleep). Results were used to inform testing at six US cancer centers
Phylogenomic analysis of a 55.1 kb 19-gene dataset resolves a monophyletic Fusarium that includes the Fusarium solani Species Complex
Scientific communication is facilitated by a data-driven, scientifically sound taxonomy that considers the end-user¿s needs and established successful practice. In 2013, the Fusarium community voiced near unanimous support for a concept of Fusarium that represented a clade comprising all agriculturally and clinically important Fusarium species, including the F. solani species complex (FSSC). Subsequently, this concept was challenged in 2015 by one research group who proposed dividing the genus Fusarium into seven genera, including the FSSC described as members of the genus Neocosmospora, with subsequent justification in 2018 based on claims that the 2013 concept of Fusarium is polyphyletic. Here, we test this claim and provide a phylogeny based on exonic nucleotide sequences of 19 orthologous protein-coding genes that strongly support the monophyly of Fusarium including the FSSC. We reassert the practical and scientific argument in support of a genus Fusarium that includes the FSSC and several other basal lineages, consistent with the longstanding use of this name among plant pathologists, medical mycologists, quarantine officials, regulatory agencies, students, and researchers with a stake in its taxonomy. In recognition of this monophyly, 40 species described as genus Neocosmospora were recombined in genus Fusarium, and nine others were renamed Fusarium.
