Social and cultural factors affecting rates of regular retreatment of mosquito nets with insecticide in Bagamoyo District, Tanzania
Insecticide-treated mosquito nets have an impact on mortality and morbidity in young children under controlled conditions. When integrated into larger control programs, there is the danger that rates of regular retreatment of the nets with insecticide will drop, greatly limiting their effectiveness as a public health intervention. In Bagamoyo District, Tanzania, rates of retreatment dropped significantly when payment for the insecticide was introduced. A series of neighbourhood (hamlet) meetings were held in all study villages to discuss people\u27s concerns about the insecticide and ways to increase rates of retreatment. Although changes were made in the procedure for retreatment, rates of retreatment remained lower than expected and showed marked variation within as well as between villages. We then conducted unstructured key informant interviews as well as informal discussions in a village with strong variation between different sectors of the village in rates of retreatment. While logistical problems were most frequently cited as reasons not to bring nets for retreatment, political and social divisions within the community provided a better explanation. This is borne out by the low response to rearrangements in logistics which made retreating the nets significantly easier for households, and the higher response when changes were made in the channels of communication as well as the logistic features. It is clearly more difficult for villagers to appreciate the benefits of the insecticide than those of the nets. Great emphasis needs to be placed on the insecticide and its beneficial effects from the outset for any large-scale programme to be sustainable
Capacity Value of Solar Power: Report of the IEEE PES Task Force on Capacity Value of Solar Power
This paper reviews methods used for adequacy risk assessment considering solar power, and for assessment of the capacity value of solar power. The properties of solar power are described as seen from the perspective of the balancing authority, comparing differences in energy availability and capacity factors with those of wind. Methodology for risk calculations considering variable generation (VG) are then surveyed, including the probability background, statistical estimation approaches, and capacity value metrics. Issues in incorporating VG in capacity markets are described, followed by a review of applied studies considering solar power. Finally, recommendations for further research will be presented
Progressive transformation of a flux rope to an ICME
The solar wind conditions at one astronomical unit (AU) can be strongly
disturbed by the interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs). A subset,
called magnetic clouds (MCs), is formed by twisted flux ropes that transport an
important amount of magnetic flux and helicity which is released in CMEs. At 1
AU from the Sun, the magnetic structure of MCs is generally modeled neglecting
their expansion during the spacecraft crossing. However, in some cases, MCs
present a significant expansion. We present here an analysis of the huge and
significantly expanding MC observed by the Wind spacecraft during 9 and 10
November, 2004. After determining an approximated orientation for the flux rope
using the minimum variance method, we precise the orientation of the cloud axis
relating its front and rear magnetic discontinuities using a direct method.
This method takes into account the conservation of the azimuthal magnetic flux
between the in- and out-bound branches, and is valid for a finite impact
parameter (i.e., not necessarily a small distance between the spacecraft
trajectory and the cloud axis). Moreover, using the direct method, we find that
the ICME is formed by a flux rope (MC) followed by an extended coherent
magnetic region. These observations are interpreted considering the existence
of a previous larger flux rope, which partially reconnected with its
environment in the front. These findings imply that the ejected flux rope is
progressively peeled by reconnection and transformed to the observed ICME (with
a remnant flux rope in the front part).Comment: Solar Physics (in press
Amplitude and phase representation of quantum invariants for the time dependent harmonic oscillator
The correspondence between classical and quantum invariants is established.
The Ermakov Lewis quantum invariant of the time dependent harmonic oscillator
is translated from the coordinate and momentum operators into amplitude and
phase operators. In doing so, Turski's phase operator as well as
Susskind-Glogower operators are generalized to the time dependent harmonic
oscillator case. A quantum derivation of the Manley-Rowe relations is shown as
an example
Imaging Sources with Fast and Slow Emission Components
We investigate two-proton correlation functions for reactions in which fast
dynamical and slow evaporative proton emission are both present. In such cases,
the width of the correlation peak provides the most reliable information about
the source size of the fast dynamical component. The maximum of the correlation
function is sensitive to the relative yields from the slow and fast emission
components. Numerically inverting the correlation function allows one to
accurately disentangle fast dynamical from slow evaporative emission and
extract details of the shape of the two-proton source.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figure
2022 Update of the consensus on the rational use of antithrombotics and thrombolytics in Veterinary Critical Care (CURATIVE) Domain 6: Defining rational use of thrombolytics
Objectives
To systematically review available evidence and establish guidelines related to the use of thrombolytics for the management of small animals with suspected or confirmed thrombosis.
Design
PICO (Population, Intervention, Control, and Outcome) questions were formulated, and worksheets completed as part of a standardized and systematic literature evaluation. The population of interest included dogs and cats (considered separately) and arterial and venous thrombosis. The interventions assessed were the use of thrombolytics, compared to no thrombolytics, with or without anticoagulants or antiplatelet agents. Specific protocols for recombinant tissue plasminogen activator were also evaluated. Outcomes assessed included efficacy and safety. Relevant articles were categorized according to level of evidence, quality, and as to whether they supported, were neutral to, or opposed the PICO questions. Conclusions from the PICO worksheets were used to draft guidelines, which were subsequently refined via Delphi surveys undertaken by the Consensus on the Rational Use of Antithrombotics and Thrombolytics in Veterinary Critical Care (CURATIVE) working group.
Results
Fourteen PICO questions were developed, generating 14 guidelines. The majority of the literature addressing the PICO questions in dogs is experimental studies (level of evidence 3), thus providing insufficient evidence to determine if thrombolysis improves patient-centered outcomes. In cats, literature was more limited and often neutral to the PICO questions, precluding strong evidence-based recommendations for thrombolytic use. Rather, for both species, suggestions are made regarding considerations for when thrombolytic drugs may be considered, the combination of thrombolytics with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs, and the choice of thrombolytic agent.
Conclusions
Substantial additional research is needed to address the role of thrombolytics for the treatment of arterial and venous thrombosis in dogs and cats. Clinical trials with patient-centered outcomes will be most valuable for addressing knowledge gaps in the field
Reconstructing the 3-D Trajectories of CMEs in the Inner Heliosphere
A method for the full three-dimensional (3-D) reconstruction of the
trajectories of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) using Solar TErrestrial RElations
Observatory (STEREO) data is presented. Four CMEs that were simultaneously
observed by the inner and outer coronagraphs (COR1 and 2) of the Ahead and
Behind STEREO satellites were analysed. These observations were used to derive
CME trajectories in 3-D out to ~15Rsun. The reconstructions using COR1/2 data
support a radial propagation model. Assuming pseudo-radial propagation at large
distances from the Sun (15-240Rsun), the CME positions were extrapolated into
the Heliospheric Imager (HI) field-of-view. We estimated the CME velocities in
the different fields-of-view. It was found that CMEs slower than the solar wind
were accelerated, while CMEs faster than the solar wind were decelerated, with

Disruption of a structurally important extracellular element in the Glycine Receptor leads to decreased synaptic integration and signaling resulting in Severe Startle Disease
Functional impairments or trafficking defects of inhibitory glycine receptors (GlyRs) have been linked to human hyperekplexia/startle disease and autism spectrum disorders. We found that a lack of synaptic integration of GlyRs, together with disrupted receptor function, is responsible for a lethal startle phenotype in a novel spontaneous mouse mutant shaky, caused by a missense mutation, Q177K, located in the extracellular β8–β9 loop of the GlyR α1 subunit. Recently, structural data provided evidence that the flexibility of the β8–β9 loop is crucial for conformational transitions during opening and closing of the ion channel and represents a novel allosteric binding site in Cys-loop receptors. We identified the underlying neuropathological mechanisms in male and female shaky mice through a combination of protein biochemistry, immunocytochemistry, and both in vivo and in vitro electrophysiology. Increased expression of the mutant GlyR α1Q177K subunit in vivo was not sufficient to compensate for a decrease in synaptic integration of α1Q177Kβ GlyRs. The remaining synaptic heteromeric α1Q177Kβ GlyRs had decreased current amplitudes with significantly faster decay times. This functional disruption reveals an important role for the GlyR α1 subunit β8–β9 loop in initiating rearrangements within the extracellular–transmembrane GlyR interface and that this structural element is vital for inhibitory GlyR function, signaling, and synaptic clustering
